Great video. Thx for making this. I have never driven a race car, but I also have trouble with the lack of feeling forces, speed, and the perifery visual. I need to fell the downforce, the weight shift, the shift in balance general to feel how much grip there will be. I like sim racing, but compared to real life, there is this major difference you explained at the beginning. So the approach to get fast is also an other. In sim racing you can go all in in practice and see if it's possible to make the corner. If not you try again a bit slower and see if it works. In real life you have do do it the opposite way with much smaller increments to find your limit. My biggest problem to get fast is the breaking. I can't feel the deceleration, and when releasing the brakes I release it to less. I can't manage it to get those little brake input close to the apex to let the front bite. My application of the brake specially while releasing the brakes is my biggest problem. When I compare it with the aliens I see my problem. I over slow to the apex and have to much brake application while start turning, what give less grip for turning and results in much slower corner speed. I don't know how to practice this. That's a reason I like watching your videos, specially racing stream. I focused on your inputs to learn what, how and why you do it. I have to look in your playlist to see if you have a tutorial for breaking. And sorry for my bad English

This was a very good and cool vid Kevin. I can see from all the comments that everyone loves hearing the real life side of our hobby. So cool that you had that live footage in the Honda too. Your vids are more entertaining than most TV shows and for all the experience and credibility your have gained with all your years on the track you never come across as pompous or know it all. Never driven on track, passenger once in a 350z around BIR, which was fun as hell. My experience is just spirited 7-8 tenths driving on twisty back roads. The big thing for me real vs sim is the feel. Zero feeling of g forces in sim, which could be aided with a motion set up, but I don't want to drop that kind of cash. But the nice thing with a sim set up is being able to somewhat experience these cars and tracks I will never be able to. That and being able to "drive" fast during the winter, which in MN is almost half the year. Oh, another great thing about sim set ups vs a street car at least, tuning the wheel feeling... my daily's steering is feeling a bit light because I spend more time driving the sim with at least double the force.

Your first point about no consequences for risky or foolish decisions is one of the things that bothers me about sim racing online. If drivers in iracing had to pay fines or deal with more serious repercussions than just a warning or a week's ban for reckless driving, I think many people would think twice about sending it in very high-risk situations and the racing would be a lot cleaner. A sim racer will always push harder than a real racer. No matter how hard they push the limits there is always that little fear of going too far. Sim racing you have no consequence except for a bad race.

It's always interesting to hear from people with actual racing experience! I would love to drive around real track one day, and I'm really curious about what skills are actually transferable. I don't know if you've tried Automobilista 2, but they have some pretty advanced rain simulation, with wet and dry lines, and changes over time. And the physics have improved a lot with the latest update. Would be interesting to hear your opinions.

I agree on the brake feeling. Still using g29 pedals and I find its very inconsistent. Haven't tried loadcell yet maybe that's my problem..... time to upgrade! IRL I could brake so much later than some. In sim though people are running up on me from behind as I cannot seem to brake as late for some reason and when I try I'm off in weeds LOL.

I went from a g27 pedal set with the geteye spring to a set of heusinkveld sprints (and a Simagic Alpha Mini vs g27) and it made more of a difference than I expected. Those pedals are really good, expensive, but good. The DD base is also night/day.

Loadcell will make a big difference for your braking. I started on a G29 too with an AXC mod and wasn't able to get trail braking right (1 lap would be good the next one I would loose 1 sec on braking). I switched to a fanatec V3 set and now I'm like 1 to 2 sec faster (also because of practice overall) and with a difference of less than 0.2 sec a lap. So you won't get the real feeling of a true brake with load cell but it really helps with consistency and performance.

You made a comment about not feeling what the car is doing in game, that you are relying on visuals. I use to be a instructor for police pursuit driving. This is my MAJOR hang-up on ACC, I can't "feel" what the car is doing and it's so difficult for me to overcome

My view is that sim racing vs real racing is like watching a blockbuster movie on a phone compare to watching it in a iMax theatre. It's the same basic experience but there is so much missing at the phone level. I do both but I feel like someone has taken away a couple of my senses on the sim. So much of racing in real life is about what you feel through your body.

Although the 1 second off the best simracing guys seems to be a bit disappointing for you in itself, if you're really "a casual racers", that could mean that your real life racing skills actually tranfer quite well to the game. Would you agree with that and would that mean that the skills are somehow transferralbe from your point of view?

It’s hard to say. I’ve never been 1 sec off the pace in real life unless there was a mechanical or fundamental car problem. The way I always looked at it is they are different disciplines with the same idea. In real life I can just “feel” what I need to do better. In sim racing I have to look and analyze. If that makes sense. Surely there advantages coming from real life to sim. Thanks for the comment!!! :)
