Question: if iRacing and ACC are the most realistic sims but 'drive very differently from one another' how can either actually be realistic representations of real world driving physics?
@blackrahk2037
@blackrahk2037 2 жыл бұрын
These are a all "games". Professional drivers all say the same thing. Each have a different "driving philosophy" and reward a punished different things. I feel like GT is the only game to where the "weight" of the car means anything. I like AC and ACC but like he said in the video, you can't always tell what the car is doing. I haven't played Iracing in years but it seemed like it was trying to make you feel like you could be a racecar driver instead of "you suck.." like GT and AC.

I feel like iRacing is very realistic in some aspects while ACC are very realistic in different aspects. iRacing has god tier crash physics and the way the car moves from the outside looks realistic as fuck. Meanwhile ACC has amazing force feedback and great weather simulation, but both are similar in that they both have laser scanned tracks and a competitive multiplayer system.

I played GT Sport for years(and now GT7) and i'm a huge fan of GT series. 3 weeks ago i bought a gaming PC. I can't even compare GT with games like Assetto Corsa, Automobilista 2 etc.The difference in physics, handling, tyre grip feel, track surface feel etc is so much more realistic, its just so fun to drive, its actually feel like i'm driving a real car.. Honestly, AC1 on PS4/5 isn't even comparable to AC on PC(even without mods), i was shocked how much better it feels on PC.GT is a great game to start simracing journey, but after a while you really need something better,more realistic. It's like riding a 250cc motorbike and then upgrade to 600/1000cc motorbike,its totally different league😁 When i drive Assetto Corsa i just don't care that much about my lap times because its really satisfying, rewarding and realistic to drive..

GT7 has gotten a lot better since launch. I think it will simply keep getting better as well. I had issues with the handling in GT7 until I decided to play around with tuning. Once I took the time to learn more about tuning and setups is when the cars started to handle much better! Now I find the handling to be rather smooth and enjoyable. I'm fairly certain one of the goals of GT7 was to make the tuning more important and relevant to your ability to succeed in the game.

"Old" guy here too. My first racing game was Pole Position. I was into Gran Turismo in high school, then fell away from games for a while. I got back into GT when GT Sport came out on PS4. Ended up buying a G29 and had a lot of fun. Then I started seeing guys running VR on youtube and thought it looked so cool. Long story short, I now race in VR in weekly leagues on a fairly high end rig. Dove right down the rabbit hole. LOL! But after 4 years, it still impresses me. As a kid I never thought games would get to this level of realism and immersion. If it's overcast when I'm racing, and the sun suddenly comes out, I would swear I feel the warmth on my skin. It's amazing how easily the brain it tricked.

GranTurismo will always be relevant by name recognition alone. Its the most accessible "sim" by far and the controller gameplay experience is about as good as it gets. The physics just fall short in comparison to the hardcore sims as it isn't lifelike and a bit counterintuitive but that is something that can be altered through updates.

@@Delimon007 I think by now it has enough sim features to be classified as a sim. And it's even better in many physics models than some "hard-core sim racing games". It's just that iRacing and ACC are even more sim focussed. And GT can never be on the same level for several reason; 1) GT engine runs several different types of cars, while the "hard-core" sims only run GT3 cars pretty much. This means the engine can focus on that category of car, while GT7 has to find a middle ground to accommodate a 100bhp family hatchback..and F1 cars, Gr.1 cars and GT3 cars aswell as rally cars, classic muscle cars, supersaloons, trucks and a go kart. (Have I missed anything out?) So there'll always be a compromise. 2) GT7 is held back by PS4. Other "hardcore" sims aren't even on the console market except ACC which was literally released a matter of weeks ago. 3) GT7 will always put controller first as that's where the target market is. So the driving dynamics is catered for the heavily limited controller. It also ensures fairness when controller users play wheel users. Since wheel users get more feel/FFB and all those goodies..it makes it easier to judge steering/braking/understeer/oversteer etc. Moreover it's easier for fine tune movements and corrections on a 32inch wheel using 2 hands and entire arm...as oppose to half an inch stick using the thumb tip only. 4)ACC and I Racing been out for several years and the updates are pretty much polished the game off. GT7 is new therefore has a lot to work on in terms of physics updates. 5) hate to say this..but GT7 cares more about graphics fidelity, and some crazy whacky museum history lesson on the automotive industry, aswell as taking photoscape pictures and worrying about how the sunlight and stars look...more than the physics models. This is GT's USP that other sim competitors are still trailing on by quite a margin. Which is still impressive.. considering GT7 is limited by PS4

I'd check if the balance of the spring stiffness matches from gt7 to the other sims, also possibly some custom dif settings could play a role. If gt7s dif settings are preset to something that will operate different than what the other sims do then it would also effect the handling. I've noticed plenty of MR cars in gt games that have stiffer rear springs, despite already having a high rear weight bias.

Enjoyed the comparison. For those of us lacking a high end PC, ACC is the only option. It looks like this will be true for some time as Rennsport will be another PC only sim. Unfortunately, the discontinuation of support for older gen consoles has fragmented multiplayer and left it in a pitiful state. Usually no more than 30 people in servers at any given time on PS5.

In GT7 you talk about the bipolar handling on and off throttle, which sounds like a differential issue to me. I understand that the problem is with the game's physics and goes deeper than just car tuning but I would've liked to see some differential adjustment in conjunction with your other adjustments, as well as some spring and damper adjustments to lessen weight transfer and try and get the car more planted and consistent on and off the power. I'm not doubting your tuning chops at all, I'm just curious to see if a couple more tweaks could further improve the car as I don't own GT7 myself (although I have played it). p.s. - Love the Deadmau5 livery in iRacing haha

However, the majority of my driving is in ACC because it has a very realistic feedback, and I enjoy the AI racing. A lot of people complain about the public lobby racing, and all the complaints are legitimate. The skill level varies widely and there’s no real penalties for reckless careless or intentional incidents. To put this into context, I have driven Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Ferrari IRL on closed road courses, And racing Sims are nothing close to the real car driving experience! You have to hit those corners perfect with the right angle and speed or your going to lose traction immediately. Its a definite difficulty spike and can be very frustrating at times but it makes doing the perfect lap feel amazing. I’ve drove hundreds of laps of Spa on GT7 and i’m not too bad at getting round. Hey, nice look into these games compared. While I’ve been into racing-games since the ‘90s, and had a wheel and pedal set back then, I’m still stuck with using a gamepad these days (cause of budget constraints). So I’m not that “versed” in the more simulation-focused racers, although I would be if I didn’t have a hundred other interests (and obligations). - But anyway, I tried playing some of these, particularly Assetto I think it was, with a gamepad, but it was so unwieldy that I couldn’t make one corner properly, even with a lot of assists turned on. It felt like I didn’t know what a car was, that’s how bad it controlled. So I’ve been stuck with the more “simcade” type games for years. I’ve just purchased a pack of these more “realistic” ones for a steal, so I’m set there. Now I need to try and get something like a Thrustmaster TMX 300 or whatever it’s called. 😆 And if GT7 actually comes to PC, I might even play that one. If anything, it’s probably the best one to “start out with”, as someone who is more used to the Codemasters type racers (also before GRID and DiRT, as far back as TOCA). Especially since supposedly the Assetto games are very technical, which are actually the ones I’m most interested in. While I don’t mind diving in the deep end, it’s probably not the best idea. - I don’t know. Suggestions for with which games to start and follow up with (also which mid-range/budget wheels and pedals) are welcome though. And note that I’m the type who, as far back as the original Need For Speed games, insists on the “cockpit view” when using a wheel. Nonadat magical chase-cam nonsense. 😆 Yea, I would be an absolute snob…

I think that if iRacing was to get a major overhaul with more detail it'll easily be the best sim as cars alteady feel really natural there. However I don't believe it'll actually happen and instead someone else will eventually make it. GT7's graphics are AAA, but driving is AA. They call themselves the real driving sim, but aren't that close. As you mentioned you can rotate the car through the corner in ACC and I've felt that in DiRT3 which is very arcade, but for DiRT5 Codemasters claimed that their engine is realistic and has a ton of corrections to help the driver. Game graphics got upgraded to a very realistic level and in a few years we'll have no competition on who's lighting engine is better as it has to be very similar so the competition will move towards the more technical stuff such as accurate physics. As we get more powerful tech it'll be much easier to make sure that many people can play a high quality game. It might even be BeamNG that becomes the most realistic of them all, but they seem to focus more on remastering content rather than adding the tyre physics we need like wear, flat spots and temp. Brakes have temp, but tyres don't for some reason. They have pressure and if you submerge low enough you can see the tires collapsing because the water pressure is more than one bar plus the tyre pressure, but they still have very wonky crash and deflation effects.

And it's done it for a long time too, since I believe 2013. Plus, the on-track product is very good. Lots of brands, lots of talented drivers, great production value. And they've also (for Europe at least) launched an eSports championship tie-in for real drivers to participate since last year which awards actual championship points, which lead to racing teams considering sim racing prowess of potential drivers. Stephane Ratel is truly a very underrated motorsports promotor. Plus this year viewership has spiked since Valentino Rossi joined.

After all both games are putting down the same times on the track so are they really driving that much different? You also have a bad sampling size. I tried the same car/track combo with gt7 and AC and there is a night and day difference in terms of ffb and physics. I use a humble g29, in gt7 you miss plenty of details (curbs, bumps, track surface, braking) that you get with other simulators. The additional problem is that it's not consistent, it happens that sometimes you feel the curbs and then you change track and you feel nothing at all, even if you drive on curbs for several meters. Very strange. I hope they will improve it and introduce more options to adjust the ffb like in other games.

ACC has traction control and ABS on at different levels and you can adjust on the fly. If you are turning it "OFF" in GT7, does this take it completely off causing the mid corner snap to be worse? I'm wanting to get PS5 and GT7 for nostalgia and easy racing. Same reason I got an Series X after years of PC racing

Yeah, the TC and ABS are just on/off just like in Forza except at least in GT7 it's a setting you can change at any time while driving while in Forza it's a difficulty setting.

I've found in GTSport and GT7 that driving midships, and especially gt3 midships, you kinda have to drive with a lead foot. My fastest and most clean laps and turns have all been taken while rarely fully pulling off throttle to prevent that weird snap oversteer, you can tune it out marginally with the LSD preload and acceleration engagement values but tbh downshifting while keeping 10 or 15 percent throttle applied always keeps it steady for me

Because of engine torque braking. Strong engine torque causes disturbing the car when fully lift of the gas pedal. So with your technique, you're actually cancelling the engine braking out.

@@Mastermindthreethousand this actually helps me out a lot, will definitely help me setup and adjust my differentials in the future to accomodate for the engine brake snap, because my driving technique only works on more open tracks, anything more curvy than Spa I can't drive the same way

I struggled playing ACC, it is a game you need to constantly be on top of. I played GT7 for a couple of months. When I came back to ACC, I was a lot faster for some reason. I'm not sure why, but I like it!

Do you think that the GT7 is better than ACC? Or worth the price difference?

@@JoseMorales-vq5fu ACC is a much better game in my opinion. It is more of a simulation. It just takes time to get used to.

about acc not being "very good with gyroscopic forces"... it's because it has none (if I'm guessing correctly what he means). I've read that most sims put artificial effects on force feedback to compensate for the fact that you are sitting in a static chair driving a virtual car, so you don't have access to a LOT of things that helps real drivers to understand what is happening with the car. the biggest example, lateral g-force. however, as acc aims to be as a real simulator as possible, they just didn't add any artificial effects (or at least I think they didn't) on the force feedback, so it is incredibly strange for people used to feel the lateral balance of the car through the ffb to just play acc and realize that it is not there... because it wouldn't be on real life! you would feel it through the lateral forces, not the wheel. however, there is a software somewhere that I saw sometime that can add this effect to the game. tbh I think that it should be an option, I understand it being disabled by default but hey, I can't even afford a bigger screen or better wheel (I'm a 24" screen g29 peasant), I can't just get a motion rig to compensate for it kunos 😆

You're talking about artificial g-force effects, but that's a different thing. "Gyroscopic forces" literally mean gyroscopic forces of rotating wheels. When the rear of your car starts to slide and therefore the whole car body starts to turn, these forces try to keep the wheels rotate in the same plane, they do push back on the steering rack and you should feel it on the wheel. These are real forces, they aren't fake.

The thing about GT7 is all the standard setups are just crap. If you set them up decently they feel so much better. Also the force feedback with the fake understeer fx just makes it feel worse than it really is. GT7 to me feels better than AMS2 but it is definitely harder.

A pretty spot on comparison and summary. GT7 is more towards Forza than iRacing/ACC, perhaps its somewhere in the middle there somewhere. I find it more approachable than the hardcore racing sims, but a bit more serious than Forza. Depending on what you are chasing, theres a sim out there for most folks.

GT is fine for learning stuff like braking points, but for stuff like down force, the finer details of braking and the tire model it's extremely simple. Certain loses of traction like the one you comment happen often in GT and they feel unnatural.
