Being a huge fan of ARR, I have watched almost all of his interviews (Tamil, English ... etc). The general notion was he is a bit shy and its a bit difficult to get those "Never told, never talked about" life secrets from him. Now I realize, its probably the host who needs to make the participant feel comfortable and easy to talk to and that is exactly what Simi has done here. Like many Westerners, I first heard A.R. Rahman's music in "Slumdog Millionaire." I was immediately hooked! I like Bollywood movies & I really enjoy Indian/Bollywood music, and I was glad to add A.R. "Did it toughen you or did it make you introverted?" This question implies that introversion is weakness. Introversion is immense strength. It is a matter of how a person gets their energy, from within (introversion) or from the outside (extroversion). It is the ability to generate and retrieve energy within one's self instead of going outward to get energy from other people and outside situations (extroversion which breeds dependency). Introversion is necessary for any creative or spiritual practice- going inwards to create the outer reality. Most people don't realize this, but ARR's introversion is a key component of his ability to maintain that spiritual connection and create his music. The very thing that some ignorant people criticize him for (being shy, quiet, introverted, whatever) is the very ingredient to his success. A good number of artists have the same quality. Extroversion is largely an ego based facade of self confidence, while true confidence comes from inner connectedness that can be seen in people like ARR.

I don't agree. I think here she means 'introverted' vis a vis tough, or aggressive. Some hardships make people angry and aggressive. Others, i.e creative people, turn the pain and experience inwards which stimulates and strengthens their creativity, be it painting, poetry or music. So I think you are jumping to the wrong conclusion that she was implying weakness. Where did you get that from?? It is quite surprising when people watch a long interview and then pick out one line and misread the context, instead of grasping the overall approach. I salute AR Rahman - and I also salute Simi Grewal for gently revealing the psyche of the music genius of our times.

Hozefa Merchant I see what you're saying. The way I perceived the question was "Did it make you tough as in strong or did it make you weak?" Introversion is often misunderstood and implied as a weakness, for which people have made digs at ARR and the like. Rahman's music has been travelling through my life since my childhood..And this Interview I should say helped me the best to know more about him.. Being a Tamilian,i've seen many of his interviews to Tamil channels and also to many big media houses..But here he was more "casual" and less "aware of camera"..Simi ma'am ,the way in which you handled the questions,allowing enough space for Rahman to think and answer,yet gave back your reactions(or a representation of Audience reactions) in perfect timing and in right measure(which not all anchors successfully do),really made this interview interesting... AR Rahman just makes it so easier to believe that the power to do anything extraordinary in life does not come from power, money, fame and security. The real power to touch souls is to dive as deep as possible into one's own self and breaking one's own boundaries and limitations and to just surrender one's self to the oneness he talked about, here. When I see him, its easier to see just a man, just doing his job and nothing in life matters to him. I wonder, if all of us, could be just the true us in our lives, just like he is just him in his, then my o my, what a beautiful world it would be to live in. -Thank you Simi ♥️ -Thank you for being you.

This certainly is a priceless interview! How immensely lucky you are to have sat there and watched him play....All of those compositions are my favourites too....ones that invariably leave me with goosebumps no matter how many times I hear them! His music has touched me, made me fall in love, made me cry and made me feel inspired. I could go on and on about his music and what it has meant to me but words could never do justice. What a lovely interview this was! I found myself crying for some reason while watching it... It's certainly my favourite of all your episodes.Thank you for this!
