Rendezvous with Waheeda Rehman Part 1 (2003)

One of the episodes that got me most amazing response from all over the world was the one with Waheeda-ji!
She told me later that it was her best interview, because she 'forgot we were doing an interview'!
I also forgot!
While talking we seemed to transcend onto another zone. Then, at the end, when she sang Waqt ne kiya, I couldn't bring myself back to reality again. I was lost in her...

Thanks to this Lockdown, I am sitting and home re-visiting the old movies that I had seen in my youth. I am eighty years old and when in college, as a member of the USIS Library Book Discussion Groupin Bangalore, I reviewed the book RK Narayan's "GUIDE". I readily agreed to do so. Waheeda Rahman is one of my favourite actresses and the "GUIDE" a favourite movie of mine. I am glad that I had the opportunity to watch this Interview. Both Simi Garewal and Waheeda Rehman were wonderful actresses and the empathy they had for each other and the thread of affection and friendship they had for each other is revealed in this interview. I am in Chennai now. In this Lockdown period, I have seen "PYAASA" and "KAGAZ KE PHOOL" I look forward to seeing other movies of Waheeda Rehman and Simi Garewal. JAYASHEKAR GANAPATHY

Watching after dada saheb phalke was announced. This rendezvous takes us to the classic golden era of Hindi cinema. 😊 Waheeda ji is large hearted as she still gave credit to raj khosla for her first success even though she developed differences. I appreciate her courage to say that most of her co actors who were actor- director were better directors than actors. Simi ji , I really loved your last scene with waheeda ji in aadmi when she gives you papers. I have watched original Tamil Aalayamani and Gudi gantalu (Telgu remake ) your scene with waheeda ji still stands out. 🙏 I also remember Yash ji kabhie Kabhie. I've been watching Hindi films since I was a child, and one of the faces I can never forget is that of Waheeda Rehman's. Truly an unrivalled, classical beauty. This rendezvous is the episode I can never ever get tired of watching because it succinctly proves to me that Waheedaji is such a beautiful person both inside and out. Truly an inspiring woman. I must also add that the collage of her classic films presented at the end, as she was singing Waqt Ne Kiya, is so visually arresting and heartwarming at the same time! That said, I don't really understand what she was saying about Sanjeev Kumar and also the meaning of the term that sounded like ghareeb gaye or something, because my Hindi isn't really good. Could someone please enlighten me on the gist of these particular reminiscences? Thanks!

Gaby Poulain She said about sanjeev kumar that he was not punctual so once to teach him in a light way director said to usually patient waheeda ji to go back when he come late so that he can understand that him not being punctual bothers other people (all planned lol) so he realised after that incident. And gareeb gai means poor cow or one who is too timid so say anything or too domesticated in nature like a cow.

I have seen all Rendezvous's I think! I mean Simi ji you are a genius in making people open up. But this episode made me so sad, when Guru Dutt ji was discussed. It just reminded me of SSR ... something ineffable. This is so sad that genius and true artistry, sensitivity, kindness and genuine goodness is taken for granted, unless it is lost to the sands of time and then people notice the vacuum and say, oh we lost something big. 😭. It's like we never learn and this is bound to happen again to another true artist and good human being. With due respect to Waheeda Ji..... When she said that in/after the song " chaudhvin ka Chand" ... she realized that she was indeed beautiful on the screen...... She should have mentioned the composer, lyrics writer and above all the Singer ..Whose contribution to having that thought emerge in her IMO is far greater than the director or the cinematographer..... In "Waqt ne kiya Kya haseen sitam" , although the writing and composition and singing is unquestionably heavenly but so is the direction and cinematography... which is not so in the song " chaudhvin ka Chand".... Here the singing , writing and the composition take the major laurels!!!
