For QBQ^t to be a Schur decomposition, isn't B supposed to be upper triangular?

You are correct. B is supposed to be your triangular. The correct form for Schur should be A = QBQ^T, where B is upper triangular. Watching this back I can see I wasn't super clear on that. My bad. Was more focused on B being a similar matrix for computing eigenvalues purposes.
