Majority of the somali loan words used in this video all have original somali words. For example for khatar translated to danger we say “halis” for face “weji” the original somali word is “fool” the word (hawo/ air) the original somali word for it is “dabeel” other words like soul “naf” “nafta” in arabic, in somali the oringinal word is “ruux” another example is luuqad/langauge we say “af” which is a metaphoric way of speaking as it also translates to mouth in somali. The word value “qiimo” in somali is qaddari. The original somali word for respect is not ixtiram but “cis/ darajo” the word animal the original word in somali is xoolo. Xayawaan is a loan word. The original word in somali for liar is beenaale/beenloow/beenlaay. The other 2 words are gendered so when referring to a women as a liar you could say she’s a beenlaay but for a male you would say beenloow. Hope thay cleared some of the misunderstanding. Somali is an ancient cushitic langauge and we still use our original native somali words more often instead of loan words.
@samuelkilla83652 жыл бұрын
The word you mentioned are arabic too. عِزّ = respect /cis , which means also honor درجة = darajo/credit روح : Soul/ ruux قيمة: value/qiimo the word dabeel means wind in both arabic and Englisch.

@sam sufi I’ve attended both intermediate and secondary school in Somaliland and had Somali and Suugaan as a subject throughout all those years and yes fool means face and the things you mentioned except for forehead. And af means both language and mouth. One word can have several meanings depending on the context. Most languages have that
@AbdirahiimYa Жыл бұрын
@sam sufi I actually disagree with several points you made. Firstly, the root meaning of a word does not change no matter how you use it but how it's grammatically structured in a sentence clarifies what meaning is being conveyed. "Fool" has three meanings; "face, "front tooth" and "labour" so depending on how you structured the sentence it can mean either of the three. Secondly, I do agree that we've got a lot of similar words that we share with others but one of the ones you mentioned is in fact a loan word. Take for example; "foog" comes from the English word "fork". Thirdly, half of Somalis don't come from Arabs, that's significantly misleading propaganda that has been started for the past century, no ethnic Somali are descendants of Arabs no matter their clan. Only a fraction of Somalis(nationality wise) are actually descendants of Arabs and the Ashraf might also be, but apart from them, no one is.
@abdirazaksaladhussein894 Жыл бұрын
There is a lot of words in Somali language but origanaly comes from Arabic language.
@Allinda. Жыл бұрын
Soul or spirit in Arabic is ru7/ruh روح . The "nafs" also Arabic it's the same as self or spirit or soul . Ruh and nafs both Arabic. Also the word value In Arabic is both Qima and Qadar قدر both are Arabic qaddari also come from Arabic qidr/qadar just like qimo came from qima قيمة.

People sometimes forgot the distant history but the official written language in Somalia prior 1972 was Arabic. Written Somalia Language was creating in 1972. The creation of the official Somali language has eliminated the need to have Arabic as the official language and lessened the importance of younger generations to learn the Arabic but you can still find a lot of similar words in the Somali Language even if the pronunciation may be different.
@Hawd4 жыл бұрын
Not the language. You mean Somali language used Arabic script until the 1970s. Arabiç also borrowed from the Phoenicians. Cushitics had scripts long before the Arabs such as the Meroitic script. All Afroasiatic languages influenced one another since having common canvas to start with
@fai-pe7oq4 жыл бұрын

@@fai-pe7oq I prefer the Latin script coz Arabic one is just too complex and needs far more resources to educate highly illiterate society like Somalis. vib sh In 18th century India it was “Urdu” that was regarded as the lingua franca and spoken by majority of people, because modern Hindi till then was unknown, and no literature existed in it. Development of modern Hindi was a much later occurrence actually, you can read more here. The Problem of Hindustani (1944) by Tara Chand

vib sh All Arabic/Farsi words are taken from Urdu, into Hindi. Ordu/Urdu developed as a language for Muslims in the region to make connections with each other and trade with Muslim nations. “Hindi” developed years after Muslim rule ended.

@avrakehdabra58632 жыл бұрын
Languages evolve overtime and gradually old words are replaced with new words (often loan words) while the old ones are relegated or take on a different meaning. The original Somali word for face is fool and that's why "ugly" means foolxumo in Somali. It literally means ugly face, think about how weird it would be if it meant ugly forehead. Also Abdullah gave a great example, usually Somali poetry and maahmaah contain a more refined set of vocabulary.

Somali is Cushitic language (Oromo, Afar, Sidama, Agew, Saho, Konso) but in the larger group it's in the same roots as Arabic, Phoenician, Punic, Tamazight, Hebrew, Aramaic, Ancient Egyptian and so forth. In another words, Somali is old and so is Arabic. I understand both languages. There are loan words then there's phonetic, structural and the bases of speech. Let me give you example. The word Ma is one of the fundamental words for both Somali and Arabic. You can't loan it. Arabic ما عِنْدِي Ma éndi (Somali spelling: Ma cindi) It means don't have Now the Somali equivalence. Ma laha (don't have) Arabic: Ma ismak/ismuka What is your name? Somali: Ma tagaysa? Are you leaving? Arabic Ma fee (not available) Somali Ma hayo (not available, don't have) Ma can be used as "not, don't" or what/ask questions in both. There countless such words. I will use Somali Latin spelling just keep in mind X = ح C = ع Another example is/ist Istiicmal (use) Istarex (relax) Istag (🇸🇴 stand up) Ismamuul (self manage), mamuul is the same (administer/rule/manage) Ma istiicmashay? Have you used it? Anigu waxan akhrista tariikhda I read about history. In Somali "Al/el" (the), changes according to the object: Kursiiga (the chair) Miiska (the table) Babuurka (the car) Shaha (the tea) Milixda (the salt) Even plural form and singular changes: Rida (the goat) Riyaha (the goats) Ri (goat) And it's endless.
