Similarities Between Bengali and Odia

Bengali and Odia are both Indo-Aryan languages belonging to the eastern branch that share a lot in common, but how similar are they? In this video, Shazeen, a Bengali (Bangla) speaker from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Kamal, an Odia speaker from Berhampur (Brahmapur), Odisha, India challenge each other with a list of sentences and to see the extent of mutually intelligibility between their native tongues.

Odia (ଓଡ଼ିଆ) is primarily spoken in the Indian state of Odisha where it has official status. In addition to Odisha, there are significant Odia speakers in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Due to its long literary history and a very small amount of borrowed words other languages, Odia is designated as one of India's classical languages, along with Sanskrit, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada.
The region of Odisha(sometimes spelt as Orissa) was historically known with various names like Kalinga and Utkala.During ancient times, the Kalinga war was fought here, after which King Ashoka followed Buddhism devoutly.
Some parts of Coastal Odisha had maritime trade relations with South East Asian countries during ancient times. In its memory, festivals like Boita Bandana and Bali Jatra are celebrated today.
In 1912, parts of Bihar-Odisha region got separated from the Bengal region under the British rule.
In 1936, a separate Odisha province was formed, which is celebrated as Utkala Dibasa (Odisha Formation Day).
Bengali (বাংলা) is an Indo-Aryan language and the official and most widely spoken language of Bangladesh and second most widely spoken of the 22 scheduled languages of India, behind Hindi. Within India, Bengali is the official language of the states of West Bengal, Tripura and the Barak Valley in the state of Assam. It is also spoken in different parts of the Brahmaputra valley of Assam. It is also the most widely spoken language in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, and is spoken by significant minorities in other states including Jharkhand, Bihar, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Odisha.

Bahador Bhai one request please try to include West bengalis more to represent Bengali cause I being a Manbhum dialect and standard dialect speaker facing difficulties to understand or relate to her Anglo style Bangladeshi Bangla. Bangladeshi or sylheti, Chatgainya are only Bengali for say but in reality they are more closer to Asamese than to bengali. Their tibeto-burman influenced pronounciation is completely different from standard Bangla.

I am originally from Sri Lanka , Sinhala is my mother language. History says we came from Odisha in 5th BC. At least some words from Odia sounds similar to Sinhala. Thanks for this interesting interview. Languages are always interesting.

My maternal grandmother grew up in cultural center of Odia literature, my paternal grandmother grew up near the Odisha Bengal border. My maternal gradmother's dialect sounds like Sinhala, my paternal grandmother's dialect sounds close to Bengali.

I think Shazeen really loves Chillies. Odia and Bengali can be upto 80-90% mutually intelligible if spoken slowly. Although I think Bangladeshi Bengali is a bit farther from Odia then Indian Bengali.

I'm Bengali and my mother dialect is Sylheti, what she said in the start of the video is right. Many of the Bangladeshi dialects differ so much from standard Bangla that they can be considered separate languages in their own right. Also in all three Eastern Indo-Aryan languages (Odia, Bangla and Axomiya) money is called tanka/taka/toka. Such a lovely video with two beautiful languages, I can understand Odia a bit only when the speaker is speaking slowly.

As an Assamese speaker, Odia was quite easy to guess for me. I already learnt Bengali. I'm trying to translate the first 3 Odia sentences into Assamese and Bengali and to another sister, Sylheti which is spoken by maternal side of my family. 1. Or: Mũ gitô gaibaku bhôḷô pae. As: Môi gan/git gai bhal paû̃. Bn: Ami gan/git gete bhalobashi. Syl: Mui/Ami gan/git gaia bala fai. "I like to sing songs." (git in the latter three languages is less commonly used than gan.) 2. Or: E pania-ṭirô dam koṛi-e ṭôṅka. As: Ei phoni-khônôr dam e-kuri/bis tôka. Bn: E ciruniṭir dam kuṛi/bish ṭaka. Syl: Ou xaxoi/siruni ôxanôr dam bish ṭêxa. (The word for comb diff in every language. Assamese also uses kãkoi, but for traditional combs mainly. Sylheti and especially Assamese use many classifiers. So for -ṭi/ṭa Assamese uses khôn or pat as a comb is flat.) The word kuri is nowadays used by older Assamese speakers only. I heard kuṛi is unfamiliar to Bangladeshi Bengali speakers, but used commonly by West Bengal Bengali speakers.). 3. Or: Ôti lembu cipuṛile pita. As: Bôrkoi/Otikoi nemu sepile tita. Bn: Oti lebu ceple tikto/teto/tita. Syl: Oti/Beshi lembu sifle titta. "When lemon is squeezed in excess, it becomes bitter(?)"

@@sagirahmed1601 we Odias generally type that sound as rd, there is also a different rdh sound, where a puff of air is added to the rd sound. Retroflexes are very important in Odia still, unlike other Magadhan languages. Meaning gets changed if correct letters are not inserted, for example Kawraw is tax, Kawrdaw is side/direction, Kawrdhaw is flower bud. It's the actual standard pronounciation, aw sound is to there after each letter and pronounced as such.

I'm a Bengali whose village is in Purba Medinipur district of WB. The Bengali dialect that people speak here is heavily influenced by Odia. My ancestors apparently were Odias who migrated to Bengal and we eventually became Bengalis. Hence there are many common surnames across the border-Jana, Mohapatra, Pradhan, Swain, Nayak, Nag, Patra, Mishra. Odia and Bengal are just like Haryana and Punjab

@@das4637 I’m not gonna lie , you’re better at this than me. The poribare onso I know in sylhet we say foribarer ongsho and I know odisa for me is quite similar. It’s like Nepali and rohingya language. I can’t explain it but when I hear it, I can actually pick up the conversation. I don’t know if it’s the same for you. I was taught Bangla in England and then kinda self taught myself and watched films from all parts of Bengal. Really wanted to know more deep rooted about culture from Hindu and Muslim bhuddist and stories like shaat bhai chompa in both cultural aspect, even food. I just find so many changes and similarities. Like I didn’t know panta baat is a thing, a lot of us diaspora here usually have the generic food.

Bengali. My native village is Saotia, Thana: Mohanpur, Distt.: Paschim Medinipur. However, we speak colloquial Odiya at home, the Medinipuri dialect influenced by Bengali. Like we say jol and not Pani, Krisno and not Krusno, bhol not bholo. Kiso not Kono. The Baleswari dialect of Odiya is lexically 90% similar. I have no problem living in Balasore but Cuttacki Odiya is a little difficult for me. We however write in standard Bangla.

One thing Bahador is that a lot of Odia speakers in India are exposed to Bengali from West Bengal than the opposite, especially due to actors, singers and Bengalis living in Odisha. Bangladeshis would be much isolated from Odia. So the comparison becomes moot a bit. But yes nothing can be done as this is the reality.

I do live in the West now, but I grew up in Bangladesh for 13 years - my accent flip flops depending on the context my brain thinks its in. So, around my family my accent is at native level and was spoken at home only. Around Non-Bengalis, I usually speak in English. So, here is the context. And, also, there are many Bengali accents just as there are many accents in English. Would you say how an Anglophone Aussie says ‘about’ is similar to how an Anglophone Canadian says ‘aboot’? 😁

I am a Bangladeshi, and I could understand 80% of those Oria reference sentences (from listening and reading the transliterations provided in the video). I didn't know Oria and Bengali were so similar! Thanks to the organizer and the two guests! There is actually a saying in Bengali, "Lebu beshi chiple tita hoy", meaning "if you squeeze a lemon too much, it becomes bitter." Shazeen's Bengali accent is a bit different than the common accent of Bengali in Bangladesh. Especially her pronunciation of Sanskrit-originated Bengali words was a bit Anglo-influenced. But I enjoyed their conversation so much! Thanks to all.

Do you guys know there is at least one dialect which belongs to both Odia and Bengali? It is spoken in the old Medinipur district. That dialect, known as Midnapuri, has many archaic characteristics which are lost in the standard dialects of Odia and Bengali languages. I am well versed in a variant of Midnapuri which is spoken in the western parts of Jhargram district and adjoining parts of Odisha and Jharkhand. It is very fascinating how this dialect has survived untill modern times. I have not come across any linguistic or anthropoloical studies which has tried to understand it. I would love to connect with anyone who is interested in it.

That dialect is of chiefly Odia origin as Midnapore was part of Odia kingdoms till the 17th century CE. Still, it has a heavy Odia cultural and culinary influences, apart from the Bengalised vocab. In fact, your surname is of clearly Odia origins.

Some examples are Mishra, Dash, Pati, Rath, Satpathy, Nanda, Acharjya, Maiti (Mahanti), Jana (Jena), Rout, Kanungo, Khanda, Bhuinya, Sahu, Senapati, Pradhan and many more.

I’d have to disagree about not having trouble with understanding different dialects. Some dialects are more similar to standard Bengali so it’s easier to understand, but the Chittagong dialect is much harder to understand. People from different regions in Bangladesh will communicate by adapting the way they speak to be closer to standard Bengali

@@thegreengatsby9803 okay, in Bengali Sun = সূর্য = Shurjo, not Surya, you can call it "Shouro" but its so much bookish. Also South = দক্ষিণ = Dokkhin, not "Dokshin", in Hindi its "Dakshin". And in 12:45 "ati" literally goes "Oti = অতি" which means "So much/excess" in Bengali. I live in Bangladesh, was born & raised here, travelled to almost every part of this country, your pronunciation isn’t like any of the local dialects of Bengali. Seems like she is speaking some alien's lang and probably Bengali is not her first language cause she can not read her part properly and busy in imitating British accent and Lastly the sentences chose by her has little to no usage in daily life. Poor odia/ Utkal guy.

Exactly. She can't speak Bengali properly. Bengalis living outside India and Bangladesh should not participate. Look at their accent. So disappointing 😞

You are absolutely right. I am a Bangladeshi and she can’t pronounce Bangla at all. Although she claimed that she lived in Bangladesh for the first 13 years of her life, she only know 60% of the language I would say. I am just disappointed that they chose a person like this to represent our language!

If you know Sylhet and Chittagong dialects well, then you will understand every other Bengali dialect properly. I am Sylheti first sentence I understand properly. In we northeastern part of Bangladeshi, they always say vala pai which means like it.
