i am a Persian speaker and i know Bangla too . Now i'm living in Bangladesh . it is very strange to me when i talk in Bangla and i forget a word I just say it in Persian and it turns to be same in Bangla . As far as I know there are around 60,000 similar words between Bangla and Persian .

this is not true at all, there are no words similar to Persian, they all love and know Urdu and that is why they know these words. I can prove it using Bengali dictionary.

This is because Farsee was the court language of the Indian subcontinent for ~1000 years. Indians used to learn Farsee for education just like we learn English these days. Modern Bengali incorporated a lot from Farsee, Portuguese, and English.

Well, the reason behind the overwhelming similarity between Bengali and Persian can be understood from history. Before the invasion of British colonizers, Persian was the official language in Bengal. Persian was only replaced by English by the British East India Company in 1837, which is just two centuries ago. Even now a days land documents contain hundreds of Persian words. Many Bengali Muslims have Persian ancestry. Beig, Shah, Mirza, Khan these surnames are very common in Bangladesh. Some of the Bengali Muslims are indistinguishably similar to our Persian counterparts. Great Persian poet Hafiz Shirazi was invited in Bengal by then ruler of Bengal Gias-ud-Din Azam Shah. Jubilant Hafiz accepted the invitation. However, he was unable travel such a long distance. He sent his reply to Gias-ud-Din Azam Shah with a nice poem where he expressed his gratitude and love for Bengali people. Last but not the least Gulista Bosta of Sadi, Mosnawi of Rumi, Dewan of Hafiz and Rubayat of Khaiyam are still unimaginably popular here in Bangladesh.

@Proud Bangladeshi গর্বিত বাংলাদেশী I don't think that, there are plenty Bengali muslims here in West Bengal. Mostly Biharis though. I can personally say for myself that Bengali muslims are well read and well educated and just as Bengali as any other hindu Bengali. But I don't really like Bihari muslims, don't know if that bothers you but they seem to be living in an old era which has long gone. Most of my Bengali muslim friends are not that religious though. Even I am not as a Hindu. Durga Pujo to me is basically a festival where people come together and have fun. And do we think that being muslim is un-bengali? Not really, We do have a few differences in food habits though. And old people might think that muslim Bengalis we converted under threats but some of them changed due to the caste system which most hindus will not agree with. And I have had Many Bangladeshi friends both hindus and muslims who came here to study and I got along with them really well. "Bengali hoite gorbito" after all. Hope that answers your question.

K N Subramanian No, the Sanskrit and Avestan is another conversation. The reason why bengal, especially East Bengal (present day bangladesh) was heavily influenced by Persian is because of the influx of Persian people and others into BD. Bayazid Bostami comes to mind. Also East bengal saw a lot of afghan/Pashtun mercenaries retreat in to places like Sylhet because of the mararta empire.

*It's not surprising that Bengali and Farsi has similarities. Farsi has a long history in Bengal. It was the official state language, the literary language, the language of the royal courts, the language of the courts of justice and the language of the ruling classes in Bengal, from the 13th to the 19th centuries.* Nowadays, Bengalis are almost completely unaware of this part of their history, perhaps, due to Bengali nationalist politics and revisionism; and the deliberate de-Persianisation and Sanskritisation of the Bengali language since British rule.

Actually in bengali it is not Ayna , it is darpan but people don't use it. Perhaps this similarity may be because of Turkic invasion of Bengal in 13 and 14 th century . These Turkic people introduced many Persian words in here. Even if u notice Bengali Hindu and Muslim in same locality , they speak different way . I know this cause I am an Indian bengali whole ancestors migrated this side at the time of partition of India . Also Kushti is not bengali but the bengali version is Mollojudho.

Majority of the muslim people who ruled India came from Turko-parsi-mongol region, and the language got mixed with Indian Sanskrit, thus creating Hindi and Urdu, same language (almost) and different script. Hindus used devnagri, and muslims used a script which is closer to Iranian (parsi). There was no 'bengali' language before 1400, and most of the bengali words are directly borrowed from sanskrit, hindi, parsi, urdu and tribal language (bengal was a tribal zone). So the influence of iranian in Bengali is very obvious. The bangali which bangladeshi people speak has even more urddu/parsian influence.

Ok so at 3:47 when he uttered the sentence, it's clear that this guy is a Bangladeshi whose pronounciation of words are kind of cringy to us Indian Bengalis.

Persian (or Farsi) & Bangla (or Bengali) both languages are similar because both belong to same language group that is Satem (or Eastern Indo-European). The origin of both languages are same i.e. Indo-European (Eastern). 1. Indo-European (Eastern) --> Indo-Iranian --> Persian (or Farsi). 2. Indo-European (Eastern) --> Indo-Iranian --> Indo-Aryan (Vedic) --> Sanskrit --> Bangla (or Bengali).

Thanks for the video, its bring some of our academic learning into live :) Actually the Muslim ruled over the greater India around 700 years, by these time all the official works was in Farsi. So many of the pure Farsi word was adopted in Bengali may be also in Hindi and Urdu. From our language study, we know that we adopt many Persian words those are mostly related to Islam and Workspaces, but we have other Bengali synonyms of those words also.

Baba is originally an Arabic word for father. and most other similar words are result of over 500 year old rule by Mughals over India who used to speak in Persian in Mughal court.

Clicked on the video expecting slight similarities in pronounciations and maybe meaning. But I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised by the similarities. Feels good knowing I won't have much of a difficulty conversing with a Persian.

Most of Indian people can understand these words as there was a muslim rule in for around 1000 years. And official language was Persian itself. So Persian words which were actually Arabic sometimes, got deeply spread to regional languages. But bengal has more ancient relationship with Persia from time of Avesta. According to some historians, "Magadh" the area consisting today's bengal Bangladesh and bihar region, was called Magadh as magi people, people worshipping fire and sun had migrated in that area. Also Bengalis and Persian speakers both pronounce o sound instead of pure a sound.

Old Persian,Avestan,Classical Sanskrit were closer in ancient times and descend from same PIE...so not surprising....also the latter day mughal influence..though they adopted persian ,another Indo-aryan language ..it will be more interesting to see Arabic influence on Indian languages...and all Indian Languages derived much grammar and are much influenced by sanskrit...sanskrit being the one of the oldest of IE if not the oldest considering Hittite,Mitanni etc and the enormous influence it had...so they will have similarities with most other languages of the world ...

Some uneducated people are making abrasive comments because they do not know about their History! Persian (FARSI) was the official langiage of almost all Muslim emperors of India. It was never Arabic! So, naturally, when you use a language for hundreds of years, a huge part of it will assimilate with the indigenious language. Its way more in Urdu and Hindi. Besides, culturally, Persian it is one of the richest language in the world. So, it's normal.

There is a difference in sentence structure between Bengali and Persian. They have lot of common words but slightly deviated it's standard pronunciation. Major problems to understand Bengali speaker to Persian in sentence structure ( order of parts of speech). It opposite is also true for Persian speaker .
