When you mix great guitar work, an ear for melodies tied to great lyrics that we all can relate to and sung by 2 angelic voices in harmony, you get one of the best groups of my lifetime (and there have been many).

They have so many good songs. I think my favorite is "America", which hit me pretty hard when it came out and still hits pretty hard. I also love "Old Friends/Bookends". I find the strings in the production of the studio version to be overwrought, but their simple, guitar only performance live at Central Park rings true.

The lyrics may be more relevant in our current cell phone obsessed society than it was back then. It does paint pictures with its words, which is poetry. And so beautiful.

One of most deepest and beautiful songs on the album. About a relationship that has loss Romance and interests in each as after a long time being together are going through the mechanics of a relationship without the passion of a relationship. Absolutely great song. Also, another beautiful song you should react to: " El Condor Pasa." This song is FIRE and one of my all-time favorite songs.

I'm actually watching your long-form Patron full 'Parsley, Sage' album review right now - but popped over to YT to give info about this song for one and all. Paul Simon was boarding in a London lodging with a young poet, guitarist and songwriter Al Stewart (who went on to have great success with his poppy folky Year of the Cat album), and I am sure they shared songs. Al's dark and strange (and oh so English) lyrical approach, I believe, was an influence on Paul Simon (his time in London being quite the education in folk/acoustic song-writing.) I have to mention Bob Dylan in this post, regarding his influence, but that's another story for a different day. To get to my point, give the first three albums by Al Stewart a spin. Powerful, tasteful song-writing with a wink and a smile. The songs "Patterns" and this one a very Al Stewart-y. --- post-script. You have excellent ears, great taste; and a clear passion for music. Have you ever thought of becoming a music producer? You'd smash it.

Let's keep in mind that Simon was all of 25 years old when he finished writing this gem. The violins and the celli that follow the mentioning of Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost respectively are indicative of the perfection of the production. Fifty-five years on, and this song is still so emotionally moving. Thank you for sharing your reaction!

Just great seeing you being knocked out by Paul Simon's lyrics. He's maintained that level of quality writing for six decades. When you combine the quality with the longevity and the mainstream success, I think he's probably America's preeminent lyricist. Very much looking forward to seeing your reaction to his Graceland album on Patreon. (Hopefully, it'll eventually be followed by Here Comes Rhymin' Simon and Still Crazy...)

Just a few months after this album was released, my father's 15th birthday gift to me was taking me to see Simon & Garfunkel live at the Scottish Rite auditorium on Nob Hill in San Francisco. It was just the two of them on the stage, Paul with his acoustic guitar and nothing else. It was magical, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I don't remember if they did this song, but if they did, I know it was still great, even without the other instruments. Every song simple, stripped back, beautiful.

It's just about the same topic as Carly Simon's song, That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, but told in a vary different way. Sometimes she blocks, but the live version with her in a sexy burgundy-wine/rusty-red dress, doesn't get blocked. Funnily enough, the camera lands on Art Garfunkle for second, before the song begins.

Seeing Simon & Garfunkel in 1968 was my very first concert ( I was 14-15 years old) was a eye opening event for me. Seeing The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan show sparked my curiosity about music. Seeing The Who on The Smothers Brothers show was the next step. That live performance by S&G fueled a voracious love of music that I still carry today at 70 years old. Paul Simon stands shoulder to shoulder with the greatest songwriters of he generation

Again, Paul Simon is a genius. His ability to write a lyric is up there with Dylan, his composition and production of music is amazing, and his abilities to play and sing are top notch, too. And Art Garfunkel had the voice of an angel. Their 5 studio albums together are equal to, or greater than, most artists of any era.

I always found its self-aware pretentiousness to be the entire POINT of those lyrics. “And we speak of things that mater, with words that must be said: can analysis be worthwhile; is the theatre really dead?” That whole stanza is SAVAGE, but with a lovely and gentle melody to conceal the blade. It isn’t in the least bit “precious.” It is a gorgeous and deeply poetic song, with a deep and poignant awareness of how human we are.

I agree with you. Irony isn't dead: it's just that Paul Simon has most of it in his back pocket. She moved so easily, all I could think of was sunlight; I said, "Aren't you the woman who was recently given a Fulbright?"

it’s a lovely song, but it just should not have been released as a single. it’s an album track if there ever was one. Today you’d call it a deep cut! Just think of the songs from the Classic Rock period that could have been singles but weren’t released in that format. “Here Comes the Sun” springs to mind. Likewise, there are odd choices for singles. This would have made a nice B side.

'Disappointed that there was no reception for this. I think many of us from that time had believed that our generation was pushing forward into a Renaissance, a dawning of enlightenment. We were leaving behind Vietnam and wasteful wars, striving, instead, towards a better consciousness. 'Seems we may have surrounded ourselves with ourselves. Sorry, Paul - the masses didn't want poetic messages sung to them - They wanted to sing along to: "Jeremiah was a bullfrog...".
