That song uplifted and ‘relaxed’ a bunch of us who went through the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the assassinations, the burning cities, the upheavals. It took us all like it took you and soothed some of the pain.

Art Garfunkel has always had one of the purest, most beautiful male voices in music. Paul Simon doesn't appear in this video. However, he sang harmonies on the 1970 release of this hit song, which became the #1 song of 1970.

I love so much how he carries this song even at his age in this performance--still hitting so many of the notes and altering as needed. Just as brilliant as the younger recording.

That's Art Garfunkel. He was performing live in front of 500k people in sheep meadow in Central Park in 1980. The album version is a duet w paul Simon who wrote the lyrics and music. It's one of the most beautiful and famous ballads of the 2nd half of the 20th century.
@pamelahofman17853 жыл бұрын
Artie's voice has always been called angelic. You seriously need to listen to the original studio version on your own. It's very emotional and Paul joins him for a bit later in the song. Paul wrote most of the songs and they usually sing as a duo but he wanted Art to sing this and Art has said it was one of the best gifts he's ever received. I think we all feel that way.

@joemercury1003 жыл бұрын
Many here have commented about how much better the studio version is - the full orchestration and the harmony Simon brings in the final verse. But also a mistake in this version by Garfunkel. Instead of "I will lay me down" in the 2nd chorus, he sings "I will ease your mind' which he used again in the last chorus. Well, it sometimes happens in live performances.

This might be one of my top 10 songs of all time. I was actually at this concert. I was a freshman in high school. It was in september and there were around 500,00 people in central park. It was largest concert in history at the time, but it was my first show. It was an all day event as we arrived about 7 hour earlier to get a decent seat. Even with that, there probably still 50k people in front of us who had camped out all night. Lots of people in their 20's and 30's. Lots of alcohol and drugs being using freely. It was amazing.

The studio version is better in some ways (harmonies yes, ending no IMO) but what I really like about this version is watching this kind of random looking dude stand there with his hands in his pockets in front of a basic mike, no effects, live in front of thousands of people and just kill the vocal. No substitute for talent.

It doesn't matter what the circumstances, this song can make grown men cry. No need for an explanation. IMO the studio version is better (yes it's possible!), but this is still spectacular. S&G had a string of amazing hits through the 1960s, almost all written by guitarist Paul Simon, all perfectly suited for the soaring angelic voice of Art Garfunkel - and their harmonies are astonishing. Try "The only living boy in New York", "The boxer", and "Sound of silence".

I love the melancholy sound of Simon & Garfunkel's original "Sound of Silence," but I hate Disturbed's cover of it for changing it to an angry sound, and I resent that so many people think Disturbed's version is the original. I won't listen to Disturbed any more - it disturbs me too much.
@gibsongirl21003 жыл бұрын
Ugh - thank you! I get so aggravated when I hear people talk about that version in reverent tones. I find melodramatic and over done, with every line sung as if it were the climax of the piece. It completely diminishes the effect. I actually had someone get mad at me when I told them that I didn't care for it and why. Since I don't have a background in music education I can't put it the way someone who does would; hope you know what I'm trying to say.
