I am a Japanese man of sixty eight years old. I watched the movie `The Graduate` about fifty years ago in Tokyo when I was a university student. This video reminds me of my happy joyful university days. It is a very nostalgic sweet memory.
I was a child fresh in elementary school in Taiwan then. I knew nothing about the movie but was familiar with the melody. Elder cousin played the vinyl record frequently. Listening to the music out of the house, I sat on a bench in front of the gate enjoying the sunshine in the summer afternoon. I think that's a wonderful memory similar to yours.

Coming of age movie for me, saw it w/a couple of my high school friends in a small theater on Biscayne Blvd close to where the old Miami Herald Bldg used to be; I still remember the kindly old gentleman who ran the ticket booth looking @ us as if we were too young to "see such an adult movie"(we snuck in & somehow convinced him we were older than 15 @ the time, we had a blast but times were diff then). Wonderful cast & soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel: The Sounds of Silence.

My "first time" when I watched this movie, was just after the summer holidays - when I had my first kiss from a girl - I was 9 yrs old then (on a disco to the "Rivers of Babylon" by Boney.M.) Her name is Agatha... And then +- @ the end of September - this masterpiece was shown on Polish TV One, just after evening news at 8 pm... I was shocked! (And we were lucky enough to have songs' lyrics translated into Polish, and mind you - that was a time of Russian occupation, so-called 'communism' in Poland...Then I've been waiting to hear those songs again for the next 6 yrs... (we had no normal access to any records at that time)... I only learnt one thing: What Love Is!

To me, this is one of the greatest love stories of all time. How two young upscale, college graduates, classical Americans, break away from their comfy suburban life and traditions into an unknown and chaotic future just because they fall in love. Today I find this rather unthinkable as young graduate couples are focusing more on where their job offers would take them individually... one may be going to Connecticut the other to Alabama, but love has a small part in this equation, it´s just not practical. If they coincide, fine. If not, well, too bad. Romanticism is vintage. This is my favorite movie of all times. Greetings from Chile!

@@psrfpsrf My comment has little to do with Mrs. Robinson and the affair with Ben; this has happened too many times. The unusual part is the choice the two young ones make at the end. I think millennials today would not go for it. Between love and $$$$ they´ll go for the $$$$ 8x2
@ginevskyabe2204 жыл бұрын
The movie takes on a darker more powerful tone when you realize that the Braddocks (including Benjamin) are assimilated LA Jews and the Robinsons (business partners) are WASP. The signs are there in the lyrics to "Mrs Robinson" (a "toast" to an institutionalized Alcoholic) ; in Benjamin's oafish delight at discovering that Elaine was conceived in the back seat of a car, in his uncharacteristic insensitivity and anger in responding to Mrs. Robinson's injunction against his dating Elaine ("you don't think I'm good enough to marry your daughter") (there are surely more obvious reasons for a mother to object to her lover dating her daughter). The anger of the assimilated but only partially accepted Jew, culminates in the penultimate scene when the cross is used as a weapon to lock the Robinson's and their ilk in the church. Of course the last scene of the young couple riding off to nowhere in a public bus raises the question of where do you go from there? Mike Nichols confirmed that initially the studios wanted Robert Redfield to play Benjamin but that Nichols took a risk on an unknown Dustin Hoffman (it would have been an entirely different movie with Redfield--who no-one would mistake for Jewish)

Yes a great movie 👍 and a great actor. Memorable in Midnight Cowboy which I isaw in Leeds on a high after the university turned down my dad's request to let me stay in after I deliberately failed my first year exams. Phew! The world outside awaited. Free to explore myself and a world different to the safe middle class existence I was brought up in.. not always a success. Often lost and lonely like I am now. But things usually work out and if they don't I just start all over again. Bit harder at seventy but still fit.can do zoom classes with BA and Simon. Long walks towards Paralaia. Fun with the girls at Abantaz when I have the cash. First my little holiday/adventures await

At the beginning of the video he is sitting on a plane. Two bags were standard, there was more leg room, smoking was allowed, people got off the plane on the ground instead of the tunnel, nobody had to take the shoes off and have to go through a full body scanner, nobody needed a mask. Sadly that is what I am thinking about re-watching this masterpiece. Funny how we get used to less and less freedom little by little.

Okay. Get this. The truth. I was in high school and my beloved English teacher told us it was a must to see "The Graduate". I did. I was so touched by Dustin Hoffman - even identified with him although I am a female. So I confused that performance by an actor with reality and two years later I met my first husband, who looked even more like Dustin Hoffman than Dustin Hoffman does. I loved my dear husband so much but it was WRONG from the start. We both went on to other marriages and end of story, but I still remember the first time I saw him - not Dustin, my Bill. I was speechless with love. That quickly. Watch out if you confuse reality with celluloid dreams.
