That said, there is no reason to sound bitter for the Disturbed version. Without Simon and Garfunkle, their version wouldn't exist. Why can't they both live together in harmony? The reality is that S&G version was the warning and Disturbed version is more like nobody listened. Disturb's version compliments S&G and there shouldn't be any competition between the two.

This is the original acoustic version that didn't go anywhere, so producers added a bass, drums and electric 12 string guitar to it and it went straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Simon and Garfunkel you have obviously never heard, they are icons of music starting in 1965 but had been singing since they were kids, had a local hit called Hey School Girl when still in high school. They are in the Rock and Roll Hal of Fame. Paul Simon wrote the songs, both had solo careers after their official break up in 1970, and occasionally they would put on a concert for Charity. 10 years or so after they broke up, they held a free concert in Central Park in New York. They expected a crowd of about 20,000. Instead 500,000 people showed up. Their music and lyrics are taken very seriously by my boomer generation as meaningful comment on society's ills, life and other subjects. Famous songs are I am a Rock, America, The Boxer, Mrs. Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water, My Little Town, Kathy's Song, Cecelia, El cóndor pasa (If I Could), Scarboro Fair, The 59th Street Bridge Song [Feelin' Groovy], Homeward Bound, For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, Old Friends /Bookends....

I know its popular with modern internet click-bait, but don't feel obligated to rank things you enjoy. Paul Simon is one of the greatest American songwriters. You can't study American music and not study Paul Simon. He and Art Garfunkle made a formidable folk duo in the '60s and '70s. Garfunkle sings the high harmonies, Simon plays guitar, writes the songs, and sings the lower harmony. Yes, their version of The Sound of Silence is much faster than Disturbed's cover, but they were going for different feels. A common description of the difference between the 2 versions is that the original is a warning, and Disturbed's cover represents anger that the warning wasn't heeded.

What you need to understand, is this was released in 1964; the 60's were primarily the 'pop era' for music. There are many older songs, that decades later were revamped. One of Australia's great singer-songwriters, Kasey Chambers reworked Eminem's rap song Lose Yourself; in Kasey's situation, she actually slowed the song down to a country/folk rock ballad. Another great Australian artist, John Farnham took The Beatles classic song Help; and turned a pop song from 1965, turning it into a rock ballad with the backing of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I would recommend you react to these artists, you won't be disappointed.

Mia, this is the original song. Simon & Garfunkel are one of the greatest duos of all time. 1965. It got to be an anthem for the counter-culture and Anti-war movement against the Vietnam war through the late 60s. This song is one of the most important songs to modern music and of all time it still hits that nerve today as it did 60 years ago. We cannot go back to that time or relive that heart-wrenching time of the Vietnam War era, but when you sit and listen to the power of this song you really start to understand its meaning and its impact of the struggles we have faced before and will again. As for which is better? Well, there is NO SUCH THING. This original sound was the original WARNING, of what was going on and who we were becoming. Disturbed's version is the anger that the WARNING has been ignored and we need to wake up to it. Pentatonix's version is the hope that the we can listen to the WARNING and fix the situation. Geoff Castelluci's version is the sorrow that we forgot the WARNING but there is still time to react to it. There is NO "this version is better" nonsense, it is all just different, wonderful and beautiful as the song was intended to be.

I love the Renaissance Festival too! i would highly recommend checking out Scarborough Fair! Like this song, it was originally done by Simon & Garfunkel, but in the 90's was redone to more of a heavy metal version by Queensryche (maybe a double reaction?). Like this song, both versions are f'ing awesome, but like you... I'm partial to the heavier Queensryche version (it doesn't hurt that Geoff Tate's voice is one of the best in popular music). I'd also highly highly HIGHLY recommend checking out Nightwish doing Last Of The Wilds live! Nightwish is a symphonic metal band out of Norway that is famous for their classically trained lead vocalists, but this song is an instrumental... what many would call folk metal. Imagine celtic music with tin whistles and bag pipes backed by drums and metal guitar... and that's folk metal. It's what would happen if the Renaissance Festival went metal for a song, lol... so I think you'd absolutely go nuts for it! In the middle of the song, there's a break down and it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music you've ever heard. You seriously can close your eyes and picture yourself in an old English forest, surrounded by unicorns, fairies and pixies! kzbin.info/www/bejne/d16nm6tsnr9qZsksi=N_FPsNxbWO_ezYv8

Pure acoustic. This is the most original recording. It was released on S&G's album "Wednesday Morning, 3AM." Later, around 1965, Columbia Records added "Rock" instruments to this recording and re-released it, without S&G's permission. Still later, S&G recorded a new pure acoustic version, for the movie "The Graduate." That's almost like this version, but the harmonies are slightly different. And then, of course, there are vids of several of their live performances of the song. All versions are pretty much the same speed. That's how they did it.

You're definitely in for a treat going down that path. They so helped to define my generation. Many a morning did I, as a youngster, wake up to their wonderful vibes. If you love their harmony, consider giving "The Association" a listen. You won't be disappointed in them either. Great reaction, BTW!

A comedian named Tim Hawkins did a parody of the Disturbed version of this song called "The Sounds of Starbucks."
