Simon Jordan is 100% correct. Gerard’s formation he used at Villa was literally the entire cause of his downfall, that and his continued picking of out of form players as well as continually playing players out of positions. Gerrard only has himself to blame. Trying to compete in the premier league without a midfield ceases to amaze me for someone who dominated the midfield in the premier league for seasons. Baffling.

Souness makes me laugh "The new guys done nothing with them" Except. Change the formation so players can play in positions that suit them and the balance of the team. Press from the front rather than centrally. Go for width of forward players over either lumping it forward centrally or using the wingbacks to cross it in. And switching from defensive tactics to more offensive ones

This is the dumb narrative going around. Fact is, players have to adapt to new formations and the tactics that any given manager decides. That's football. Half the players in the Premier League don't get to play in their prefered position, players are moved around all the time to suit the needs of the team. No formation will make defenders unable to defend or forwards unable to put their chances away. What Villa fans are unable to grasp is that their players downed tools for the last 6 months and weren't even trying, which is a direct slap in the face to the fans and the club. Of course it is easier to blame Gerrard for everthing than to accept that their team is full of mentality midgets who can only play for a small club like Villa because no-one else wants them....I wonder why! If I was a Villa fan I'd be more annoyed at the players than the manager at this point. Gerrard has a lot to learn as a football manager but what those players have done for the last half a year is unacceptable. They deserve to get relegated.
@heeby123
@heeby123 Жыл бұрын
@@FreshAlchemy hardly a dumb narrative is it?! What Gerrard was doing wasn’t working. It was painfully obvious to everyone it wasn’t working except for perhaps Gerrard himself. If he, like you, thinks the players have downed tools as much as 6 months ago he could have cleared them out and bought in the summer. He didn’t. Go and watch the 6 Villa games before Sunday. Actually don’t. Wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy! Persisted with a terrible system that was easy to play against and continued to pick players woefully out of form. You play a system that doesn’t suit if the other team has better players. He played the same shitty formation and tactics against Southampton, 10 man Leeds, Notts Forest and Fulham. I really wanted Gerrard to do well, was sceptical when he came in but liked what he was doing initially. But he very quickly got found out and didn’t adapt when that happened. No choice but to get rid.

People confusing Gerrard the player and Gerrard the manager. As a manager he hasn't earned his stripes. The assumption that he will be a good manager is at this time fanciful. If he's serious about being a manager then he needs to invest time and learn the job and not assume because he was a good player he knows what he's doing. Being a manager and being a player are two separate things. Completely different skill sets.

@@Micker375 English Premier League, different ball game, Rangers and Celtic more or less play the equivalent to teams in English League 1 each week, whilst being equivalent to mid table Championship teams themselves. I think Liverpool recently proved that point, and they are not having a good season by their standards. Gerrard should maybe have looked at managing a mediocre championship or league 1 side to get the experience, certainly not a big city EPL team like Villa. The move was back closer to his family but He was too young and inexperienced to take that challenge on with billionaire owners expecting instant success. The villa fans and owners have treated a young manager like dirt and hung him out to dry. Shame on them. They hung Paul lambert and dean smith out to dry. I'd say in response to Simon's comment on SG being there a year is ample time; You have to be able to make relationships work with people who you don't get on with that well after a spell of time, personality clashes call it what you want the manager has to be so consistent in his words and actions because he needs to motivate the players every day. Such a difficult job with the money around today at the top end, which brings with it the hyperbole coming form media outlets, fans, punditry, basically everywhere. Three or four bad games now and you can loose your job. If you ask me too much hype and judgement. I feel for Gerrard, very very tough job and yes, probably not enough experience yet for a prem club but he will be back and whatever happened at Villa, I think he is a fair and honest man and has what it takes to bounce back stronger.

Lampard was 5 points of top spot when they sacked him and was unbeaten in 6 UCL games they went on one bad run and was sacked. In only one transfer window and little money to spend he's already transformed Evertons defense who conceded 66 last season only Burnley were worse. Ok the dramatically need to strengthen up top but defence wise there up there at the top there biggest loss was a 2-0 loss at Spurs there other losses being 2-1 or 1-0 as opposed to last year's embarrassing performances shipping 5 at home to Watford 5 at Spurs, Arsenal. The results might not be showing yet but the improvement already is clear to see Lampard is heading in the right direction.

English culture or should I say premier league culture towards management is very odd. Especially when managers fail. Conte had a disastrous time at Atalanta and left the job after 3 months. Just over a year later he was the Juventus coach. Luis Enrique had an underwhelming time at Roma. 3 years after he left Roma he was coaching Barcelona to a treble. If they were premier league based, none of them would be getting those opportunities at such big clubs. With managers it takes time. Not everyone Pep or Fergie. To have a long successful career in management means you will have to contend with many moments of failure. The key now for Gerrard is does he analyse what went wrong at Villa, look at the things he did wrong and try to improve on those things at his next job. And if he does show improvements, he should get another shot.
