Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we welcome mega-talented solo artist, session player and sideman, Simon McBride to TPS for a pedalboard rebuild.
Mick had been shooting some videos with Simon for Victory Amplification and noticed that Simon’s board was in need of a little Dan-style TLC. So on his next trip south, Simon dropped in with his pedals.
The way Simon approaches his amps and sounds in general is kind of opposite to how Dan and I normally approach things (very gainy amps with the FX loop in use) which brings a new set of challenges as you’ll see in this video. The most obvious of which is the high level of extraneous hum and additional grounding problems that a highly gained amp brings with it. Dan tried solving it all the usual ways (watch our recent video on that here • Be Quiet! Noise, Hum, ... )… but ended up employing a Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor, right at the end of the video.
The result are those super gained but extremely articulate tones that enable Simon's incredible approach and technique to come through in full glory. And what glory it is!
For more on Simon, please head to www.simonmcbride.net/
And check him out on KZbin / simonmcbridetv
Please enjoy the episode…

I worked as an avionics tech for 26 years and I have more than my share of scars on the backs of my hands from cable ties. To eliminate the sharp edge we would use flush cut diagonal cutters and cut the " tail " as short as possible against the locking part of the cable tie leaving next to nothing remaining. This practice helped to eliminate the cuts to our hands and heads at times LOL.

After I finished watching this clip this morning, I went in and fired up my hokey guitar rig. Honestly for the first time since I have owned my Mesa Lonestar Special, I dialed in a lot of gain on the amp as part of my pedalboard and two amp setup. I started watching TPS before I got that amp. And before and since I added the Mesa, I have been running both amps VERY clean. Because that is what you two do and it always sounds so great on the show. So today....EPIPHANY time! HUGE difference in the response of my guitars with all of this gain dialed in on the Lonestar Special. I am running a stereo delay through both amps and a GFI reverb only though the amp that is still dialed in clean. A clean boost, an always-on Lightspeed pedal, several overdrives and a few modulation pedals in there as well. Sounds REALLY good (to me) I have benefitted a lot from watching all of the TPS episodes. Today was a milestone. And Mr McBride is one HELLA player! Cheers from NM, USA

Great video guys (as usual) and thanks again for that. On an unrelated note, I think I've discovered your sinister plan: Every time I come up with an idea for a show request, bits of wisdom from your other videos come back that show me how silly/impossible my request really would be. I'll think, "What about a show on best pedals to start out with?" and I instantly start getting flashbacks of you guys saying "it really depends on the amp and the guitar and the style of the player and the genre of music and whether the sky is blue or gray that day and, and, and" and while I'm doing that one of you starts playing something that sounds absolutely amazing and I lose my entire train of thought. It really is brilliantly sinister on your part to educate and mesmerize your viewers into absolute silence. ;-) It also illustrates how difficult what you're trying to do really is. I appreciate your work.

Hello there, In the beginning of the pedalboard Build you mentioned troubles with noise and influential vibrations while using a clip on tuner on stage. My advice: try to palm mute your strings and only let the one string shortly ring you want to tune and than pm again. Helps to increase focus on the strength of that strings frequencies! I had an acoustic combo and I had similar troubles even with the build in tuner of my worthy Martin Acoustic. This trick worked just always....build in and clip on Cheers

Great tips about building a pedalboard. I've never seen a power distribution system like the modular Gig Rig. It works so well for pro boards, though it might be a bit pricey compared to a 'normal' isolating power supply for the weekend warrior, once you add up all the individual modules.

Great episode. I completely identify with Simon's need to have some reverb. There is a whole feeling of interaction with the room and maybe the amp (if using an amp-based spring reverb) that I find it difficult to play without. On my board I have modulations and delay running into a fuzz and drive. I also have a boost/light OD and a fuzz BEFORE them in case I decide for whatever reason I want that sound. It provides a lot of versatility. Anyway, Simon is a fantastic player and seeing the board built from the ground up and going through the chain is really informative. Cheers guys!

Can't wait for the Pat Flanigan Pedalboard Build episode! Ahhhh one day maybe! I even go further with the velcro. I cover the two vertical sides by cutting a piece lengthwise. Gives you a couple extra centimetres! That way you can place some pedals that have top in/out connectors all the way to the edge of the board.

I don't get Keeley pedals. I've tried a few and the only one I absolutely love is the Keeley Katana. I have one as a seperate pedal and one in the Keeley workstation. If there is one pedal I wouldn't want to miss at all, it's that one. Best (clean) boost pedal ever imo. It doesn't color the sound in any way, it adds a small bit of compression. It's a pedal that's always on for me.

On the topic of the clip on tuner issue - I had a hunch this would be the case when Simon was talking about his experience in the beginning of the video. The case is that the Polytune clip on tuner works MUCH better than any other clip on tuner I've tried. It works much better in a noisy setting especially. This is likely the difference between Mic and Simons experiece.

For breaking up ground loop hum and providing a neat little black box send/return on a pedal board I find the Behringer HD500 to be extremely useful. Or an Ebtech Hum Eliminator (especially if I want to use XLRs). Passive transformer isolation really works and a little iron coloration never hurts. Especially if any digital pedals are involved.

I’ve yet to hear an explanation of using 4 cable method, or how to run an effects loop on a switcher like that which doesn’t seem way overly complicated until a few days ago. Treat the amps pre-amp as a pedal. Instantly solved.

Could you have used two Quartermasters a 6 plus a 2 for the loop or would that have given grounding issues?

And then there's always one guy who takes that as a challenge to overcompicate things....GAVIN! JK mate. There are no bad questions, after all.

Ha ha Ha ;) I was trying to ask a practical question because here they had a significant noise problem requiring a gate pedal and a second ground lift. Some effects loops can be quite sensitive as Dan alluded to I think.

I suppose an ABY with phase/iso/grnd lift might come in handy with your two-looper idea?

Thanks for the upload guys! What a great way to get inspired today. I know you guys aren't about Multi-effects, but I recently got the Boss MS-3 and man alive am I just getting wrapped up in trying different combinations of effects and where to place them with my gain pedals! Also, Think you guys will be giving the Friedman BE-OD any more love? I know you had it in one video already but I'd love to see some tweaks!

Take a photo! Of course! Like a Dummkopf, I've been drawing out my chain with little squares for the pedals and arrows/lines for the path & wiring. TPS, saving Guitarists time and hassle, one schwang at a time. Not quite sure I understood the insert. Send>Input then...what?

4 cable method: cable 1 - from guitar to pedalboard cable 2 - from pedalboard send to front of amp cable 3 - from amp effects loop send to pedalboard return cable 4 - from final pedalboard output to amp effects loop return (basically direct to power amp>speakers)

Great video, especially the discussion of where to place modulation, but it also brought up a question I have struggled with since going wet/dry: is there a way to get modulation before drive in a wet/dry setup if I'm not using a programmable switching device like G2? My previous mono setup was Wah->Fuzz->Modulation->Drive and then into the amp input, but in order to get Drive into both amps and modulation to the wet amp only, I had to change the order. I can't figure out how to do it any other way but if you have suggestions I would love to hear it. I play a variety of guitars, primarily Strat and Les Paul, into amps set with "just a bit of hair" and use fuzz and drive to get more gain when I want it.

The vent sounds so good. I need to try one. I go back and forth between chorus, vibe and vibrato as my modulation pedals (never together, have a pretty tight setup so I’ll swap in n out), but I run them all similarly (either fast rate/depth or very slow in a phaser way). I’m thinking what I’m hearing is the vent and I may get a warped vinyl..,it never ends! Thanks guys

Mick here. I recommend the Vent unreservedly. I run that, the Supro Harmonic tremolo and a chorus with a DC-2 kinda setting. They’re all wide and phasey. Wonderful!
