Simon Phillips is not just any drummer; he’s a GRAMMY® Award-nominated virtuoso whose drumming is renowned across the globe. Known for his technical brilliance and unmistakable musicality, Simon has carved out a legendary career that spans rock, fusion, and jazz. Whether laying down hard-hitting beats for rock icons or navigating the intricate rhythms of jazz fusion, Simon’s drumming is defined by precision, power, and an undeniable emotional depth.
Simon’s musical journey began in the 1970s and 80s, working with some of the biggest names in rock, including Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Mike Oldfield, Judas Priest, and The Who. In 1992, he stepped into the spotlight with Toto, continuing to showcase his extraordinary talent until 2014.
But Simon’s contributions extend beyond his work with these iconic bands. He also led the fusion band Darwin, known for its innovative approach and complex compositions. And through his own project, Protocol, Simon has explored the realms of progressive rock and jazz fusion, producing albums that highlight his skill as both a drummer and a composer.

He's a nice guy isn't he? Very friendly and a pleasure to listen to. His narrative just flows effortless. No wonder he fit in so well in with Luke and Paich and the band. Not all talented people are easy to get along and work with long term.

Fantastic interview. Could easily listen to Simon talking for several hours. Not only a phenomenal drummer, but I swear he must be one of the nicest blokes you could find anywhere in the business as well. And that drum sound...unbelievable.

To be the first choice to take Jeff's seat after his tragic death is one thing. Going there without being intimidated by the prospect of being measured against Sir Porcaro and just absolutely kill that gig with good character and incredible talent for music is totally another. I wonder who the second and third choices for a Toto drummer were in the process? Who could have done that better than this guy? I consider Simon a brother and I've been a fan since the Mike Oldfield 5 Miles out summer tour show in Nice, south of France early 80's. Totally blew me away. Much respect.

Because we play a loud instrument I have found many effective ways to improve and grow on the drums without disturbing the neighbors. Such as body drumming, playing the arm of the couch or a pillow, or using those amazing trained ears 🦻 to play in my head . 🥁 So I know what Simon is talking about.

Hey drummers, don't ever agree to be part of playing a gig in a glass room. Back in the 90' s I was playing in a 3 piece band that wrote their own material. We were involved in a east coast college tour playing in a glass atrium at Stockton state in southern New Jersey. The acoustics were so bad trying to play in a glass building, it was the most embarrassing gig of my Music career.

The slap back Simon talks about is so disorienting. I remember playing a gig in a long rectangular room where I would hit the kick and hear it again almost as loud a second later... I had the monitors as loud as possible to drown out the reflection. My ears are still ringing lol
