As a lifelong Toto fan I can't imagine how anyone could harbor any bad feelings against Simon joining. He was the perfect choice. Chops and groove by the mile and yet totally not Jeff - that's why he was the perfect choice. And listen to Tambu and Mindfields and Falling in Between, those records wouldn't be what they are without Simon's sense of time and dynamics and his unique sound. Just as the Jeff era was wonderful, the Simon era was equally wonderful. I have nothing but the greatest respect and love and gratitude for everything Toto was with Simon, and therefore to my life too.

Simon Phillips saved the band. Toto did a Jason Newstead choosing a very different player because it was too hard to choose someone that stylistically played like Jeff. I loved that he didn't copy Jeff. In the US, Tambu had a later release, but a friend who know how much I loved Toto grabbed the CD for me in the UK. On my first listen, by the time the second track was over (I Will Remember), I was convinced Toto had made the perfect choice. I Will Remember and Bottom of Your Soul are still regularly in my playlists. And though it was solo Luke instead of Toto, Hero With 1000 Eyes has some fantastic drumming on it.

A perfectionist joined the band, and what a result, he saved Toto at that stage, creating that clear and distinct sound that is Simon's trade mark. Shannon is the closest to Simon, but I would always chose Simon, when Jeff is not available anymore, Simon is Toto 2.0 but for me Jeff is the man that gave Toto it's sound and why we starten listen to this band.

I'm not a drummer, but I thought Keith Carlock was the wrong drummer for Toto. Great chops and very versatile. Sounded right with Steely Dan but somehow the wrong feel for Toto. Simon shone on more prog tracks like Hydra. More groovy stuff like Rosanna, that's where Jeff was untouchable. But Simon's sound has been a huge influence for me, I bought Tama kit because of him, I tune it similarly (and since it was already a festival backline kit several drummers actually nodded that they did recognize the open sound of the kit) and while I can't play open handed I try to improve my weak hand.

The problem is Morse cannot and has not written memorable riffs like Blackmore. Morse is all tech, but not suited to deep purple. Someone who could follow Blackmore is Tony Iommi, who also can write riffs. Deep purple was never about technical Soloing so Morse most definitely IS in Blackmore’s shadow. Can anyone even remember a single classic riff that Morse has played? I can’t and I’m a player. He can’t play blues to save his life, it’s all soulless shredding.

I am my own artist and am not the previous person and never want to be. I usually tell them to eat shit and find another robot to play drums for them. I will maintain their music style and key recognized kicks but the rest is at my discretion, that's what makes me a musician. I find I get most of great gigs because I don't duplicate 100%.
