If I could play the drums like this, I'd be performing with Toto. Simon Phillips is one of the most creative and technically proficient drummers in the world. Period. An absolute phenomenon. Giving credit where it's due. I have heard that he is extremely humble, and it certainly appears to be true in interviews of Simon that I've seen.

There was one song I heard for YEARS, maybe DECADES and it ALWAYS sounded like the drum part was backwards (snare where the bass should be & vice versa) until half way into the 1st verse when it magically straightened itself out without anything changing, then, a few years ago, I FINALLY heard it the right way & understood what it's supposed to be!! I think it took me starting the song a few seconds in before I was able to hear it the right way! lol. Couldn't tell you which song it was, though.

Why do some parts of Simon's playing sound more like half time shuffle to me?And I can‘t help myself counting them in 4/4 rather than 6/8. It really confused me.

@SirOlsen16 жыл бұрын
That is really the essence in what he is trying to explain in his instructional video with this track. The thing is he uses the fundamental 6/8 where you actually can divide that into anything. Pretty spot on, if you ask me :) So your half time shuffle feel is as right as anything :)
@SirOlsen16 жыл бұрын
But listen to the bass line... that makes it easier to count it in 6, even when he feels like playing in 4 (which he actually does across the 6)

The technique at 3:11 that gives the ilusion he plays in 3 bars of 4/4 while stills 6/8, is called hemiola, you can use this technique by give accents to quarter notes on compound times grouping by 3 where originally are 2 beats (is a 3:2 polyrhythm). Also check "aenema" by tool made full by hemiolas.

@yoshihisa75 man? i thought it was a metronome!!! i'm not a drummer but it sounds like he's right on time most, if not all, of the time. growing up w/a brother that played drums, i remember he said that 'listening' is the most important thing. what i dig about these series of lessons is he gets a groove going that i can lock into, then he works on the style points with all the little things he does around that basic beat. If all he did was the crazy stuff, he'd lose me pretty early on.

This is from 1991. Notice Simon's subtle use of a one handed gravity blast buzz roll at 1:22, while keeping the shuffle ostinato going with his left hand. Short , sharp, perfectly placed. This is truely masterful use of a technique that many overuse to an extent which just wears out the listener.

No, it's not a stupid question. Yes, 6/8 is counted 1-2-3-4-5-6; but it's the emphasis of the dotted quater that makes it 6/8 and not 3/4, but there are exceptions to this rule. Dotted quarter= 1-2-3. If you Count to six and snap your fingers on the 1 and 4 then you have 6/8: (1)-2-3-(4)-5-6. If you snap your fingers on the 1,3 and 5 then you have 3/4: (1)-2-(3)-4-(5)-6. 3/4 and 6/8 = in value, differ in phrasing. But as i said before, there are exceptions. Hope this wasn't to confusing,

Yeah, he is a really good guy. He doesn't have an arrogant bone in his body. I like drummers as human beings as well as musicians and that's why Lars Ulrich doesn't do a thing for me. HE is an arrogant jerk! AND, he's not all that great a drummer, in my opinion. Jeff Porcaro was a great guy, Steve Gadd is a humble, great human, etc.
@duncandunorlan91667 жыл бұрын
Spot on. Playing is an expression of personality, attitude, empathy and humility so, to be a great drummer, one needs to have all these qualities. Those that do will have an emotional connection with their bandmates and create something special, and those that don't end up being twats like Ars U Lick.
@nickavenoso78514 жыл бұрын
@@duncandunorlan9166 Lars is just an arrogant idiot. That’s why I never like him or his drummer, it’s just pounding on the drums, and almost no technique. What makes a great drummer, is personality, technique, etc.

@RedVynil11 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I have this "ability", if you will, to hear other timings going on besides the ones foremost, and that's what I was hearing on 1st listen, but I hear the 6/8, now. In a way this "ability" can be a bad thing, like, when I come up with a really complex beat and I want to figure out what it is I'm doing, as soon as I try to figure it out, it all falls to bits and I usually end up losing the beat completely. If I just go ahead & play the beat without dissecting it, I can play it any time.

@benfinnell17714 жыл бұрын
little late, but it’s all a matter of subdivision and how you count it. you’re not wrong, you can count that part in either 4 or 6, try counting it in 6 and you’ll realize that it works too. simon uses polyrhythms a lot as well, which is probably another factor (playing a straight 4/4 groove in a song that’s in 15/8, for example)
@RedVynil12 жыл бұрын
Sounds like 8/8 to me.

Okay. You all are going to crucify me for asking this incredibly stupid question but how does one actually count odd time? I only play basic beats and some shuffles but I taught myself those. Simon is playing 6/8, so would somebody just count 1-2-3-4-5-6? That can't be it, that would be much too easy.
