I've known Andy since the mid 80's, when we both attended music school at UNT. He is always super nice, unreal player and very sweet guy. Funny thing is whenever I run into him in the Dallas area, all I can think of to say is something like: "Dude....you play with Simon Phillips! I can barely wrap my brain around this. One of my all time favorite musicians and one of the best drummers ever, etc etc". haah. Then Andy says something like, " Yeah, Simon is great, and he's also a really great guy!"

Man this is the most dope fusion imaginable. I've watched this vid about 50 times so far. This is the kind of music that wraps me up, man I feel this music. World class musicians every one of them and Simon Phillips is one of my favorite drummers ever. Dayam that guitar player is fire and so is keyboardist (Steve Weingart). Bass man is the bomb too.

Mr. Timmons has a feel of sheer Brilliance, Mr. Weingart is a Wizard on Keys, one of the finest in the world ! Ernest Tibbs of course is still with Simon, thundering that Bass (^: Good Luck Simon, just heard your house was damaged during the Fire down South, Calif. )^:.. In my prayers sir !!! Thank you for inspiring us all (^: !

I keep coming back to this song over and over. Just so amazing. All one needs to do is close their eyes and imagine heaven. This is it right here. Feel the music. Just so relaxing and yet at the same time, so intense. Get lost in the guitar and keys. And as a drummer, I am always lost in Simon's work. There are no words to describe the bliss.

Saw an interview with Leland Sklar about coming into the Toto tour at short notice. It was along the lines of "When you look back and see Simon there, you know it's all going to be fine". And you see that on the Live DVD. Same here. I saw this band in Copenhagen, and you see Simon inspires younger musicians to play just that little bit better... Same on the tours whe Jeff Babko was his very young keyboard player.

I don't really compare guitarists, but at first glance I thought that Andy Timmons was a younger Dean Brown. Met him a while back. Dean Brown, I mean. The brother is sooo freakin' humble and approachable. It took me a minute to realize that Andy Timmons was Andy Timmons and not Dean Brown. This tune was very... high-voltage. LOVED IT!!!!

@ericraymond37344 жыл бұрын
@King Brilliant I disagree. Timmons's blues-rock instincts brought the fire and passion in a way Greg Howe, a purer jazz player, will never approach. Jazz sophistication can become sterile and involuted at times; the genius of this lineup is that "simple" Timmons never allowed Protocol to fall into that trap. He's demonstrated on other tracks that yes. he has mastered the "unobvious" jazz idiom, and makes very careful and considered decisions about which style to play in. Greg Howe is, alas, a more limited player.

Hey Simon! This is EPIC! Little back story:I was very into this (basic) style of music In the 70s and 80s but had only discovered you a year or 2 ago and came across one of your pieces in my iTunes library today… Which brought me here. My favorite bands back then were The Rippingtons With Russ Freeman As well as The Yellowjackets, a great and unfortunately little-known band named Chi (they published 3 albums, one of which is pretty easy to find on CD and the other 2, a little more difficult as they are out-of-print (but I found all 3 recently on eBay :-) I would say their album Jet Stream is my favorite... But I digress. Just LOVE the sound you guys create and would love to see you folks play live sometime. I'll definitely look you up on the web to see if you currently/still do live concerts.

@ckbarber8 жыл бұрын
Not a true 15/8, which would typically be a quick tempo. "The Ocean" is a slow 2 bar phrase of 1 bar of 8/8 followed by a 2nd bar of 7/8, which is exactly how you count it when playing. What Protocol does in this song is at a much greater level of complexity.
