Simon Says lead by Michelle Cummings and Scott Gurst
The game of Simon Says is not a new game. In fact, many of us played it as kids and you either loved it or hated it. In the old version of Simon Says, if you made a mistake what happened? You were OUT! Now I am a visual learner, so I was always one of those kids that got out first. I was quick to follow what Simon did, rather than what Simon said. So I was familiar with the 'walk of shame' after you realized you had made a mistake and then had to leave the game, usually with your head down in disappointment.
As trainers and educators, don't we want our participants to learn from their mistakes? Don't we want to give them opportunities to try again and not to make the same mistakes again?
My friend Scott Gurst and I have put together a training video of a new version of Simon Says with new rules. Scott is the rocket scientist behind these new rules (no really, he is a rocket scientist!), and my new favorite training game. This video has been uploaded to KZbin as a free resource for any and all facilitators, trainers and educators. The video has both Scott and I as Simon, as our styles are very different. It's a great way to see how you can adapt Simon to fit your own facilitation style. Enjoy and go play!

Thank you soo Much for your Hard work on this Simon Says Game. I learned a lot from this. This really Motivates people to up grade them self. On coming Sunday Jan 19th 2014, I am doing the Simon Says game for Seniors. I was really Concerned about the feeling when a person make a mistake and out of the Game. Now I don't worry about it, because no body will be out of the Game.

Our cohort in Bamenda, Cameroon of in-trafficked persons will be learning about the Affective Skill of PLAYFULNESS and I was looking for simple games that don't require materials or a specific environment as money is scarce and I came upon this video. It's absolutely fantastic and fits perfectly in our Impact Study and supports our embracing miss-takes and the Affirmative Environment. I also love the added learnings contained within. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making and sharing this video!

Excellent revision of simon says. The only thing I have a complaint about with some of these videos is a lack of diversity. It would be nice to show a little bit of multicultural (inclusion) components to these types of videos. But I love the video and the concepts of keeping points. Great icebreaker...

sometimes people just feel shy to say they didn't understand say most of the instructions. So of course do you have any questions?-silence. what if you ask them to explain you back the rules? Anyway, this technique works well in Russia, don't know how about American students/

thanks. I'm a practicing English teacher and just came across to this game to be used in an English class. Still trynna think about what the outcomes in an English context might be...so the aim of this game in the video was to kind of train people who are going to participate in a sort of game event. But for English class...any ideas?

Simon says is too old as my opinion… I as a person we need to say different name keeping in mind of Simons ideology. I use this but i change the name to someone who will creat curiosity among the beginners. Anyways it was a great way to start up and indulge the whole class. Thank you✌️

+The Russian Concussion Hello! There are lots of metaphors I pull from this game. I debrief the experience with participants afterwards. 1. How is this game like leadership? (It's hard to follow a leader who's actions do not match their words.) 2. Did any of you make a mistake because someone near you flinched or made a mistake? (If you hang around people who routinely make mistakes, it is easy to make mistakes right along with them.) 3. Did you change your strategy for following Simon at any point during the game? (Usually in Phase 2 participants will stop looking at Simon because his/her actions do not match their words. How is this like leadership? How much extra energy and effort did it take to follow the leader when you didn't trust that what they said and did were aligned.) What other metaphors and teachable moments do you think you could pull from this game?

+Frank Gallo Hello Frank! I depends on what your learning outcome of the game is. With this version of Simon Says, we let people have an opportunity to learn from their mistakes so they can try not to make the same mistake again. In life, we all make mistakes, and hopefully we try to learn from them and try not to repeat the same errors again. In the old version of Simon Says, there was never an opportunity to learn from your mistakes -- you were just out. This new version creates space for learning. Give it a try and see if you like it!
