Bell Ringing in Lincoln, Lincs

On Saturday 26th July 2014 I organised a peal of Grandsire Cinques at Lincoln Cathedral, a superb Taylor 12, with other city centre towers open in the morning. This is some of the ringing :-)
Chedburgh Campanile: A ceramic mini ring, I was pleasantly surprised how good flower pots can sound!! They went very well and were good fun. Only 4 of us here when filmed at the beginning of the day as others didn't arrive until later; however, after the peal, and on a whim, 8 of us from the pub went back to Chedburgh at 10 minutes notice and rang a quarter peal of Bristol S Major!
St Botolph by Bargate: A nice sounding 6 which went well, all except the 5 are 1913 Taylor's - the same year they cast the back 8 at the Cathedral and Chewton Mendip in Somerset!

St Mary le Wigford: An Oldfield 4 which went well, having been hung in 1932 by Taylor's, and were tuned as the front 4 of a 6. Ringing area was dark and dingy and the bells were nothing to write home about, although they are regularly used for quarter peals due to their availability.

St Giles: A 1728 Rudhall 8 originally hung in St Peter at Arches church. When that church was demolished, the bells and organ were moved to the new St Giles. The bells were a lot better than I remembered, sounding very nice albeit a bit clonky due to the brick tower.

Lincoln Cathedral: I love these bells!! Back 8 cast in 1913 by Taylor's of Loughborough, and augmented by said firm in 1927. They go well and sound simply fantastic, although you need to ring them slightly slower else they become mushy. Thanks due to George Salter for allowing me to use his footage of the opening rounds!! :-D
The clock was also filmed striking 10pm, to give a bit of video footage of the outside of the Cathedral, one of the finest buildings in the UK and my favourite Cathedral, and also because Great Tom, housed in the central tower, sounds pretty darn good!! He weighs about 108cwt and was cast by Thomas Mears of Whitechapel in 1835. Originally he was hung for ringing but when he started swinging it was quickly realised the tower wouldn't take it!!

St Botolphs now had their bells removed, that church became an orthodox church. It is believed to be placing their bells in St Peters at Gowts. I not rung bells in general over couple of years due to poor health.

It is a bit of a shame that the internal acoustics are so poor at Lincoln Cathedral, you have to ring them a lot slower than they really want to be rung at, just to hear things properly. I think we took 3h 26m when I rang my peal there!

The 6 (where we were ringing 5 and chiming 6) are superb. The 4 I didn't much care for. I do love the 12 at the Cathedral though!

I think they’re the front four of an incomplete ring of 6 in F. I don’t know if there were already a back two that were removed.

@@1260stedders I am very surprised they don't replace the bells there with St Botolphs bells they removed due to policies of an orthodox church. Either place wigford bells in to St Peters at gowts lower down or sell them. Either way St Peter's at Gowts will have their bells replaced lower down due to the tower issues.

Actually, it is the third :). Match each rope to the striking and you will match the bells to the ropes.
