MY COMPREHENSIVE NORWAY GUIDE AVAILABLE HERE:
www.simonbraeck.com/shop/p/no...
It's good to be BACK! After a month on the road, the first episode of our road trip (struggle) is finally out. We planned driving 7000 km through Norway, from the south to the north while seeing as much as possible as we went. Truck Norris seemed ready for the challenge, but as always his personality showed up and it for sure gave us some headaches.

Awesome video! I have subbed and will follow along your journey! I was hell bent on a T3 for such a long time but I couldn't afford one in the end. I bought a British van known as a 'Sherpa' in the end - it's a 90s one, an 'LDV Pilot'. I've done so many miles and journeys and lived in her for nearly two years and she didn't miss a single beat! this is the life my friends. Love xxx

Syncro van, I went about 250 miles with the subaru engine I installed, a week ago, lost power and is making a bad noise,, been over a 18 month project, engine 4, might be coming up on 5, and still no more than 30 min from the house...due to gearing, 65 mph is 3200 rpm whcih seems a bit high for me, my friends are telling me, dump the vws, and get a 18-24 foot camper with a Chevrolet or Ford power train....IDK...the splits suck since they top out at 50 mph, the bay needs a new engine and rust around windows, the vanagon is what I am trying to focus on...2+ years now, no camping...

Nice video! And what a luck to find an expert. Sadly also denting the budget but be lucky you were not in a city. As my experience is that garage days in a city are even more expensive:) And maybe you want to hop by a marine store and ask for a 'siphon hose'. Used to bring fuel from a jerrycan to a boat fuel tank without spoiling any diesel on deck. Or water in your case. It's a hose with a holder in which is a ball. Put the holder in the jerrycan, fast pulling/pushing it up and down, and there is a flow. Super easy. and cheap. about 8-13 euro's.

Hi Simon, untill recently that i discovered your You-Tube series about your van and van life. And i enjoyed it so much!! What a views and landscape you have been travelling through! The VW T3 is such a nice and romantic bus! We almost bought one some years ago, but before that we experienced so many troubles in test drives and inconveniences that we cancelled any search of that van. We changed to a 1990 trouble free Mercedes MB 100 D. I have to admit that Mercedes is not so romantic as a T3, but we never had to cancell a single holiday. The engine is incredible reliable. How is your life now? Do you still go out with the T3 van. Please let me know, greetings, Michel

Hi Simon! Very interesting video !!! T3 paradise!))) And I have already traveled more than 3000 km in my AHU. I am very pleased with the result. I was pleasantly surprised by the fuel consumption (about 6 liters / 100 km). The only thing I would like to add is speed. The motor is 110 horsepower, and the gearbox does not allow them to give free rein. Although, if you go to such beautiful places as you, then you don't want to rush at all. Bon voyage !!! I look forward to your videos.

Get the JX rebuild, original is nicer. And it is reliable motor as it is. Strong enough for the T3 and doesn't consume that much (ours is with a highroof at about 8.5L/100km and it is still the original one, not rebuild)

Stick with the 1.6TD JX, 1.9 Tdi sounds good but the transmission was never designed for that amount of torque, basically it still a Beatle transaxle. The 1.6 TD is very reliable if looked after, I had a T3 TD from new in the 80’s

So do I, The TDI such as AHU or AFN is the best option. For easiness use an MTDI or even just an AAZ engine.

you don't even have to suck from the hose, block the bottle opening with your hand and squeeze the bottle, the pressure will send water down the hose, especially if you are transferring petrol instead of water..

Lovely views of the countryside but may I just extend a friendly warning regarding a slight observation I made during the video.....Benadikta, please be extremely careful when the camper is in motion, it might be relaxing and comfortable for you to sit in the passenger seat with your feet up on the dashboard. God forbid you were involved in a head on accident, not only will your knees totally destroy your beautiful face but your legs would be broken and shattered in many places too. Just a thought to think about.

Hello Simon: Careful what you wish for. I have an '87 Syncro and wow, is it expensive to maintain. Fun for sure, capable for sure, sits higher and is rugged, but just when I think I've fixed everything, something pops up. Your video sure makes me want to visit Norway---hope you can get reimbursed from the travel bureau of Norway tourism. Amazing photography as usual from you.

Hi! I totally believe that, I really like the Syncro look and would like a bit more overland look too. But it comes with a price and not sure if its worth it, especially considering how much time and effort we have put into our van. Thanks for watching😊😊

It might be wise to change or check bearings and cv joints on forehand, before making a very large trip. May be you expect to much from this type of car. The T3 has the looks but by far not the quality of an Unimog. It is simply a car, not an allroad vehicle. Owning a T3 from 1980, it now rolled 421.000 km. This can only be achieved with ongoing maintenance. Have nice days though.

I stumbled upon this video while looking for the answer to the 'why on earth people travel in t3s in 2020' question 😁 And yeah, why? I get the insta appeal you can cash on, but if - like you guys - you really want to go somewhere and back... Why T3? They are pricey, slow, break down often and lack the amenities of more modern cars.I did Oslo-Å-Oslo last year in a French van bought for the price of scrap and it never missed a beat. What's so good in a T3 that makes you go on despite all this?
@SimonBraeck
@SimonBraeck 3 жыл бұрын
Things like owning a T3 often stems from some sort of passion or dream. Although I agree in your arguments, you can't beat the feeling when all the hard work you've put into something like this turns out in a good way and you can enjoy the feeling while traveling. T3s are easy to fix, easy to gets parts, have plenty of enthusiasts and is a sure way of getting to know new people through breakdowns, meetings, nostalgia etc! We will for sure look for something more reliable when we need it, but for now, we want the adventurous way of doing things, its just so much fun😊 Also, you never learn something new if you don't challenge yourself!
@pdcichosz
@pdcichosz 3 жыл бұрын
@@SimonBraeck Thank you for elaborating on it, I get the dream argument as I wanted one myself :) I also understand the feeling of accomplishment you get when you work on it before hitting the road and the feeling of being the part of the group. I still don't get how unplanned pauses, waiting a couple of days for parts, all the frustration T3 owners publicly display on youtube translate to the feeling of adventure, but I guess it's either me being too down to earth to understand it or you coping with the cognitive dissonance ;) Or both :D I don't know how expensive they currently are in NO, but elsewhere, especially in the States, the vanlife fad elevated the prices of converted T3s to absurd levels. For me (and most of the world tbh) going for a roadtrip through Norway in a car that is highly likely to break down and does not cost significantly less than much more modern and reliable options is a no-go zone :( You two are lucky, don't forget about it and keep making your dreams come true.
@SimonBraeck
@SimonBraeck 3 жыл бұрын
@@pdcichosz That is of course very frustrating for anyone, but somehow it adds to the experience. I can't imagine doing the same while having kids, a tight schedule etc., but for now it’s really nice. Believe me, I have been angry and disappointed at times, but as human we tend to overlook and forget these terrible moments replacing it with good memories and stories of how we conquered the situation and came out winning on the other side :p

Its funny how naive VW T3 owners are. Buying a 35yr old bus and expect it to run like a new?! I see it all the time, specially on instagram. I have Never broken down in my VW T3 bus, but that because I have change all important parts in engine, transmission, suspension. When doing that it’s the best van you can have. But you need to restore before you drive around the world. If you don’t put any love in your bus, the bus will have no love for you! ;)
