Simone Biles becomes most decorated gymnast in Team USA history

Simone Biles made a triumphant comeback Tuesday at the Paris Olympics after dropping out of the 2020 Games, competing on the beam, uneven bars, vault and floor to bring the women's gymnastics team to gold. It's Biles' eighth Olympic medal, making her the most decorated American gymnast. CBS Saturday Morning co-host and CBS News and sports correspondent Dana Jacobson joins from Paris with more.

The men's gymnastics has taken a hit because NCAA chose to put their funding in other mens sports. This quad felt different. So much more support. Everything has just been beautiful about this Olympic quad. I've been watching since I was a kid in the 70s and I've never seen this much love and comradery before. I love it. Let's support these athletes with positivity. They don't get paychecks for this. What they earn comes from their own self-promotion.

Simón is the most decorated gymnast, but…. Larisa Semyonovna Latynina (Russian:) is a former Soviet artistic gymnast. Between 1956 and 1964 Her feats took her career total to 18 Olympic medals - 9 gold, 5 silver 4 bronze, a total of medals that stood for decades until it was finally overtaken, 48 years later, by Phelps in London. Michael Phelps remains the most decorated Olympian of all-time in any sport, capturing an unreal 28 medals over his career. 23 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze.

Simone rocks. She is black, and her teammates range in ethnicity and together they are successful. The men's gymnastics team also ranges in ethnicity. What's important is that they're all Americans and have never ever referred to the color of their skin or hair or what-have-you. They are winners because of the Content of Their Character.

Clearly you don’t understand gymnastics scoring and the penalties for poor execution. Had Simone put up low points like for falling in her events, the US team would have missed the podium an gone home empty handed. Simone could also have broken her neck or back. The injury risk is great in gymnastics, unlike basketball or soccer. The US team missed the gold medal by 3.423 points. They would have completely missed a medal if Simone had competed in vault, floor and uneven bars which were her twisting routines. So no, she did not let her team down. She protected their scores as well as her own well being. Do the math.
