This Weekend we finish the chicken coop with a great ramp and wiring to deter the dogs and foxes. Add some ISA Browns to complete the project.

I too have a homestead with a cabin that I’m finishing! No animals yet but soon I plan too! Just found your channel, I enjoy your content!🙂❤️

Glad you are enjoying it. Your cabin is a bit more pro than my tiny shack. I do like a good log cabin. 👍

Simon Hahnel Yes it is! It came as a shell from the Amish! It’s taken me 3yrs to finish the inside! 😆

Hey Simon, I was sitting in my shedroom that I'm putting together and thinking of inspirational things to do in there when I had a thought, I'm not sure if this was going to be a future project for you, but have you thought about building a rustic dunny somewhere near the cabin !!! My thought was, build the dunny as a dunny with a composting rustic homemade toilet in it so you don't have to walk all the way up to the house every time, BUT THERE'S MORE, or you could make it into your gardening tool shed to keep all your veggie gardening tools in OR make it a little bigger and have it as both, a rustic composting toilet WITH all your gardening tools in it !! And maybe make a wood storage lean too off one side of it to keep dry firewood for the cabin wood heater. Seeya Rob..............just an idea mate that's all, just trying to help, by the way I live in the Hunter Valley west of Newcastle !
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
I am looking for that next project but I don't think a dunny will be an acceptable proposal from the management committee. Like your thinking though. I reckon a little storage lean too by the coop for feed, sawdust etc. I already have a woodshed a bit closer to the house as we have a fire every night. Might need a small one by the shack for the little fire I will be putting in there. Hunter Valley is a lovely location. Bit warmer too.

Great job Simon and everyone, chooks have a new home and now you'll get lovely yummy fresh eggs when they start laying. Now there's somewhere for the kitchen scraps to go to good use and the egg shells can be crushed up and sprinkled on the garden beds when their done along with old tea from tea bags and a little wood ash from the wood heater you want to put in the cabin. It's all coming together mate, happy days, what until the fruit trees going in, WooHoo. Seeya Rob...............cracked corn gives you bright yellow yokes in the eggs and some shell grit for nice hard egg shells and they'll taste amazing, you'll find when you start getting your own eggs they won't be runny like the shop bought things you get these days.
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. Looking forward to tasting out first eggs for sure. Will have to try the corn and see the difference.

What a beautiful build .love to see your girls . What type of chickens are they...kind of look like Rhode-Reds . I have some I've had 7 yrs. They still lay great.

Thanks.Turned out alright in the end. Was a bit tricky due to the steep block. Chickens are ISA Browns. 20 Weeks. Hoping to have eggs soon. If I get a permit for more 2 Rhode-Reds are on my list.

Thank you for sharing. What timbers are you using for the fence posts?
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
They are generally yellow box gum trees. Smaller ones that died during a fire some years ago. Nice and dry and solid. Not sure how long they will last as they are untreated.

From Judy 🇦🇺. Love the chook pen. They’ll have a wonderful time dust bathing under the coop. Are you going to let them free range for a part of the day or will the dogs be a problem? Also are there many snakes where you are? 😁
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
I have trained the dogs not to eat the cat so hoping to do the same for the chooks. Then we can let them out in the fenced of vege area. Not seen a snake here but they have been seen closer to the national park.
@lesterbock98514 жыл бұрын
Simon Hahnel Thanks for the info. You should have some success with dogs. We managed to train our Australian Kelpie not to eat the chooks though one died of fright when he rounded them up (herding instinct). We did have snakes but they left the chooks alone. They preferred the rats and mice which came to our compost. Be careful if you make your own compost. Regards from north of the government rabbit fence.😁

You do realize chickens have to be fed morning and night as well as freshwater daily? You can't go away for a week on vacation! Farm animals are sometimes a lot of work. I have never in over 70 years seen a farmer on vacation. Weird huh?
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
I find my dogs tend to get upset with me when I don't feed them too. Given Covid lock down I do not think vacations will be on the agenda for some time.
