Thank you very much, Simon. you cleared up a lot of my misconceptions, and I am very grateful for that! One phrase, that you hear a lot when talking to climate change sceptics, is that the average temperature is calculated mostly using data from stations near cities (Data is collected there because of weather forecasts etc), and that cities are getting warmer, because they are growing in population. What kind of an effect does all the water/steam we emit have? Seems to me much more impactful than CO2 alone, my *guess* is that we are seeing such an effect due to both, but more so water. And that CO2 effects are atleast slightly over blown, but still the overall warming still holds true and we need to stop as much as possible as quickly as possible

Total Carbon emissions since Industrial revolution - US accounts for 25% EU accounts for 22% (if Britain included then it jumps to 27%) China accounts for 13% India accounts for only 3% People (especially western people) usually forget to look at these kind of data and start blaming developing countries but hey if you look at current emission rankings (1. China, 2. US, 3. EU, 4. India) you may find that developed western countries still pollute this planet more than developing countries.

I agree there may be a hint of that …ism, but I think it is unintended in this particular argument. I think the argument is basically a paraphrase of…. “….. I know we are contributing to significant climate change, but CHINA, we can’t control China, so all we can’t do anything, so lets kick the can down the road again”. Standard 3 steps, denial, denial doesn’t work, distraction to different subject, that doesn’t work, stall the discussion. The oil industry tactic is not to win the climate change denial argument it is just to perpetually stall the debate. In fact winning is not desirable, it could mean they are then held legally responsible at some stage in the future. It is just delay.

Being from a country (Bangladesh) which has been facing the severe impact of climate change for YEARS, I feel really angry at those who are privileged enough to say "there's only a few millimeters of rise in water level. I think people resort to this because they feel attacked and guilty and they want to shift that feeling to someone else. It's a defence mechanism. Earth (as any other planet) is in long-term thermal equilibrium between insolation (and a tiny bit of internal heat from radioactive decay and leftover from the days of formation) and radiation. The surface is heated by Sun and radiates that energy back, this time in the far longer spectrum, in far-infrared (look up black body radiation - the spectrum is not exactly the same since the surface is not black, but the phenomenon is the same). Now, CO2 has a property that the light in and around the visible part of the spectrum goes right through it (or, more precisely, right by its molecules). However, the energy of vibrational modes of the molecule is such that it readily absorbs photons in the far-infrared spectrum, the wavelengths at which Earth "cools". The molecule absorbs the photon, vibrates for a bit, then emits is again balling back to its ground state. The problem is that the photons that were going _out_ (or up, if you will) from the surface get re-emitted in all directions, including bach down. So, the surface gets a bit warmer, radiates more of this infrared radiation, and finally, the new equilibrium is reached, at a slightly higher temperature. They arent allowed, the media shuns then as well as academia. Christiana Figueres, executive secretary to the UN on climate change action said this, just prior to the Paris accord meetings. Figueres was being interviewed by "the daily business" and reported by the Gaurdian publication. Two other publications confirm the report and words spoken. "To be honest climate control is more about an over reaching effort to replace the economic system that has been in place for over 150 years, Capitalism." Climate change is just another political football being used to herd the masses towards another control system globally. Its simple, very rich and powerful people own almost everything, control everything and wish to ultimately thin the herd. I wish this was as ludicrous as it sounds. We have pandemics, climate change emergency, a worldwide refugee crisis, potential alien invasions, fires unheard of, failing crops, impending earthquakes and eruptions. I don’t know about scientists but I know many professors from my college who always used bicycles in campus with all those hilly roads given their age in 50-60s. Well they are kinda scientists in their respective fields but I saw that with age and maturity, patience comes and that’s more important in changing yourselves in favour of Mother Earth. Youngsters mostly would use cars even for few kms if they can afford to buy one…

I worked on a climate science program for a few years and worked with the land station data from about 14 small countries in the Pacific. I went in thinking there might be some group-think, but left very impressed with the whole field and the practitioners. The main influence on air surface temps in the Pacific is sea surface temperatures, so the warming signal is quite obvious and directly linked to large-scale global heat transfer. Of more concern than the warming is the storms: Slightly less often but more likely to be destructive, and less predictable in their paths due to circulation changes. Migrations into cooler zones isn't so great either. Frost stops nematodes that can destroy crops, so be prepared for a lot more disruption in farming as frost lines and other subtle barriers shift. Ocean pH is a huge worry as it could initiate the collapse of some pretty huge ecosystems. Science has to be conservative, and rightly so, but I still came away with the impression that the horror of what is coming if we do not prepare is vastly underappreciated. Please keep it up, you are doing vital work.

There are three problems with that example. First, the whole planet didn't warm suddenly, but that is what humans have done to the planet. The US is just a puny 1.84% of the surface of the Earth, and many other places, including Canada next door, were much cooler than the long-term average in the 1930s. Globally, the 1930s were significantly cooler than it is now. Second, despite producing some epic heat waves for parts of the year in parts of the country, the 1930s weren't even all that hot in the US: Four years in the 1930s were cooler than average, and overall, the 1930s in the US were cooler than the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s (and possibly cooler than the 1990s). Third, if you know anything about the dust bowl, you know that westward expansion and dumb farming methods played a big role in exacerbating the crisis. Lots of previous grassland was dug up and laid bare in ways that intensify summer heat and promote erosion by wind and rain. In short, the Dust Bowl and the degree of heat during those heat waves was also partly man-made (the air about bare soil in the summer can be 10-15 degrees hotter on a summer day than the air above land covered with grasses or cover crops.)

I think this highlights one of the biggest problems with climate change denial: Many people can't see any further into the future than the end of their nose. When you tell them that sea level increase is measured in millimeters, they can't fathom (pun somewhat intended) how it would matter to them. Bummer for their great grandkids, but no worries, great grandpa won't be there to see it. Conversely, you see the argument, "the earth's climate is constantly changing, so everything just adapts" (interesting concept since many of these same people deny evolution). They can't conceive of the time that is involved with those changes. Even the "quick" events took millennia, not decades. If you are drowning, you can't really count on developing gills to save you. My hats off to you for keeping your cool and trudging through these types of comments. Your work is needed if our grandkids are going to have a future not filled with strife and "adaption".

Lindzen claimed that the sensivity for co² was to low to create a disastrous warming, that was more than 10 years ago but now we can see the warming but since he never defined what he mean with disastrous, he can claim he is right even if billions of people die due to global warming. Since he is only qualified to talk about atmospheric dynamics, he maybe don't know more than you about disasters, biology and stuff and can't tell when we have a disaster. He focus about politics and critics of other scientists, often misrepresent what they say before he debunk them. If he must make up quotes from others to have a point, he has no point. He also claim that all scientists has a political agenda, like making money for claiming a climate problem. Maybe he think that everyone is like him since he get paid by the petrol industry. @@ytbabbler I'm not sure you understand Dick's claims. I believe there is quite good evidence for his claims like his theory on the Iris Effect. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iris_hypothesis. As to your questions of his character I believe his body of work, over 200 published papers, and being the Alfred P. Sloan professor of meterology at MIT for a large number of years should at least get him in the door to speak to Simon. If, as you say, he is a clown then that will be evident very quickly in any debate Simon may have with him. I believe Dick acts with integrity based on his scientific views. Full disclosure I've had email correspondence with Dick and he has always seemed a very friendly person who is interested in the science.

That thing about planting tropical fruit in places where it cannot currently survive misses a flipside of that same effect: The plants that currently thrive where you currently live may no longer be able to live there. Take the huge-ass pine forests of Canada, for example. The southern limit of their range is largely defined by the cold tolerance of the pine beetle, which cannot survive a cold winter but absolutely thrives in pine forests that no longer get cold enough to kill them off. This kills off the forest. And then there's a load of dead wood standing around. In increasingly dry summers.
