That is good also! 150-600 € Is only the minimum when it comes to violins. But in that range you can find something decent already. Quality of beginner instruments has improved much over the last decades. Still you are right about a better instrument. It can motivate and be easier to play sometimes.

My first violin I bought was from Facebook market place and the bridge was terribly shaped. I didn't know anything about the bridge back then. After I decided to go to a violin teacher the first thing she said to me was go to the local luthier and get another bridge made for my violin.

I know enough about the bridge and strings to be able to set up up a violin myself but when people buying a violin for the first time they will often get a cheap violin online and won't know how to set up the bridge. The bridge will often come under the tailpiece. I suggest you make a video for people who know nothing about violins on how to set it up.

Something that a beginner wouldn't likely know is that violins have a soundpost which is a round piece of wood that is inside the violin, just behind the position of the bridge and slightly off-centre connecting the top plate to the back of the violin. The smallest error in positioning of this soundpost can have the violin sounding at its best or just plain awful. Often, in shipping, that soundpost might either be slightly moved due to rough handling or it might have entirely fallen over and that's when a luthier is absolutely necessary. Even a professional violinist is not likely to do their own soundpost installation. It is sooo important is can rightly be described as vital to the sound/tone of the instrument !!

That is true. A good placement of the soundpost is very important. Still it has it's limits depending of the quality of the instrument. I have come across violin makers who like to adjust the soundpost a lot. I personally don't touch it unless it has a serious problem. Also my violinmaker doesn't believe so much into playing around with the soundpost, but she knows for sure, how to put it in for a very good and solid sound when it comes to my violin. Otherwise I agree: You should always check the soundpost after a bigger transportation.

@@SimonStreuffViolinEducation I totally agree with you in that a V.S.O can only be helped so much (ie:not much) by ANY soundpost adjustment but if you've spent say, 1000+ Euros or U.S. dollars it can be important.

There is some ebony on quality instruments thats actually more brown than black. Its dyed black and thats considered perfectly fine by most luthiers. Seeing a dyed fingerboard does raise questions, but isnt in itself proof of a low quality instrument.

Good point, also some violins with a non ebony fingerboard can sound well. I think the trend of using different wood is also not so relevant anymore. Haven't seen a bad fingerboard in a while. My own fingerboard is slightly brown but of real ebony. I don't know what coloring it would help other than sooner or later it will vanish. Fingerboards of violins are regularly grinded off if you play much, so when it's dyed it will not live through this with the same color. I wonder which violin maker would do that on a quality instrument...

I´ve ordered my violin by Thomann and I am happy with the quality, even for 90 € + resin and fretmarkers! I had not imagined that it would be so complex to tune it from 2 sides but after 30 minutes I made it ^^

I found an antique French violin on Facebook market place and couldn't help buy it. It was listed as old violin and very cheap to buy but expensive to repair but well worth the repair because the seller knew nothing about violins.

Congratulations! Over here where I live online sellers actually act as if they don't know anything about violins and cover mistakes very professionally. So that people are baited into buying it. Of course what happened to you is a lucky case! It happened to a student of mine too. She got 2 (!) concert ready violins for some hundred bucks over a private connection, which is usually the best for this kind of opportunities. My first full size violin was a present from an old lady who's husband had died. He used to play violin, so the violin was "resting" at their attic. I got it for free and played it until deep into my university times! I still have that wonderful sounding violin as a backup.

@@SimonStreuffViolinEducation if the seller knew actually how much that violin is worth I think he would regret selling it. There were no cracks in it just an opening of the seem. It needed a new bridge and tailpiece and of course new strings. It was the opening seem that was the expensive repair. I paid only $100 for it. It is now valued at $4000. So all together buying a new case for it and new strings etc. and paying for the repair worked out cheaper than $2000. Half of what it is really worth.

I wish I was more dilagent about buying my violin. I went to a local music store. It is an Oldenburg. It is priced at 189 us. I didn;t know and the store sold it to me for tax included 465 us! I am so mad.

usually colored violins are made to look good in the first place. I haven't played a colored instrument yet, that sounded better than the average normal varnished violin. But if you are satisfied with the sound, go for it! A lot depends on the player anyways.

I got an advice from my violin teacher to rent a violin. Most of the stores rent it for a year. I am an adult, I am not thinking to be a Pro, just learning to play it at least when I am feeling depressed 🤣..Do you think is a good investment or just buy a $200 violin? Thanks

It totally depends on the quality of the rented instrument. If the rented instrument is good and you can't afford to buy that quality yet, go for it! If the rented instrument is cheap and sounds bad, better invest the money in a violin, that you will own and change for your liking. Renting always leaves you with very little choice. Buying too of course, but always look for quality. Always look for good sound. If renting or buying!

I am not a fan of ordering violins without testing them beforehand. Until I am convinced otherwise, I will not recommend any violins on the internet. But the quality has gone up last decade. You can order good instruments if you are lucky for a fair price. Just make sure, that you can send it back if you don't like it!
