I studied classical guitar at Sydney Conservatorium and took up the violin as a second instrument in my late teens. This was back in the 1980s and it turned out to be a gem, dark and moody in it's tone, lovely, just lovely. It only cost me $200.00 Australian and the sellers said that they were retiring now (they were older and had arthritis) and wanted it to go to a beginner to inspire them, hence the cheap, even then, price. I've always hoped that it wasn't stolen, as it really is a great 19th-century German instrument that has me playing every day. I now play 7th, 8th-grade AMEB pieces and can play pretty well. Sometimes you just get a lucky break. I'll have it 'til I pass away or am too old to make music then it'll go to a promising adult/adolescent beginner.

I'm an older adult and always loved the sound of the violin. Next week I plan on renting a violin and getting lessons . Hope at 56 I'll be able to grasp such a beautiful instrument. Cannon is my favorite and would love to learn it. Great and informative video. Look forward to the next.👍🙂🎻

A good instrument inspires the player to play/practice more often, no matter their skill level. A first instrument should be a good one, and will require some investment. It does not have to be crazy expensive, but enough to have some degrees of quality. I agree with everything you stated here. I’m looking for a good violin to start back with after a 30 year lay off. Wish me luck!

Oh, lovely. You will sound much better then. One brand they goes into this price to range is a Revelle. I think Fiddlerman may go this high as well (fiddlershop.com). When in doubt go to Sharmusic.com. Everything they sell is reliable!

You can buy on Amazon if you stick to this price range (above now $350). One go-to brand that I recommend is Carlo Robelli, model 302.

Thank you for this - it is very informative. I did buy a Howard Core for about $500 and now I am looking to upgrade. I know that you have to find a violin that sounds the way you want it to but, at the same time, I am a little obsessed with getting a violin made around 1890. There are none around me unfortunately so that only leaves the internet. I really don't want to buy a violin without being able to play it / touch it - do you have any advice? thank you again - this was a really cute video, too!

Hi Robert! My advice to you is to go through a company which offers trials. I am not sure which one has old ones like the one you are looking for, but most good companies offer a trail for a more expensive instrument. I would recommend to keep your $500 one though, in case you wind up playing around a campfire or just traveling with it!

I like Howard Core and recommend them! IMO, you can trust anything you buy from them.

Tiger Princess Some companies offer a trial, so you can hear what it sounds like. The only way to buy online and be sure of what you are getting is if you are buying an established brand. Two beginner brands I can recommend are Carlo Robelli and Cremona. Keep it within the price range described in the video and you will in the clear.
