I’ve just finished my college applications. I wrote an entire essay on why I struggled so much when asking for help. I was one of the “gifted” kids, so I never once struggled in school. I then went into the STEM Programs at 17, and began struggling. I didn’t know how to ask for help, and was afraid too, because I felt it made me less of a person.

As a third-year college undergrad, it wasn't until this past summer that I built up the courage to let go of the walls I'd put up for myself and ask for help. I'm happy to see that as a high schooler you're taking note of this, it took me almost getting suspended from college for not meeting grade recs and dealing with the cops after getting robbed to move on from myself and if you don't address it early, you could experience negative things due to it, so keep learning!

Not sure why asking for help is so difficult for this gen. What has made you so special that you can’t do what millions before you have done to be successful?! That’s on you, not on anyone else. We all learn the difference between what one can do and what one cannot do. That’s part of growing up and developing on a harsh planet.

I am 40 years old, and I was just about to type the same thing! Asking for help either opened the door for ridicule about your own past failures or shortcomings, or it would open the door for predators who were looking for some "favor" in return. Asking for help was not a good thing to do, that's for sure.

45 yrs here. Have spent about a decade unlearning this behaviour and, though I'll probably never undo it fully, it's the only way to go. As Simon has said, people can feel pressured to continually lie, hide and fake, for fear of being "found out" and that's totally unsustainable.

If someone is asking for help or raise from managers, they just devalue it by giving you count of things on which you missed out to be perfect at the time of appraisal but whole year they will remain silent and will not come to you for feedback if someone is lacking on something, that is why people with hard skills prefer to leave the organisation than to caught up into baseless arguments

Simon Sinek highlights the struggles of today's young generation, which I personally relate to in dealing with stress and confrontation. It's apparent that there's a gap in teaching essential human skills. This also reminds me of how Lisa Haisha's mission to provide the training helps me have difficult conversations and cope with stress effectively, ultimately creating a better, more confident version of myself.

My opinion, you have it backwards. Genz doesn't know how to communicate face to face. No eye contact, hand shake, assertiveness... I get so many texts from my staff for raises and I say to come to my office and we'll talk about it. They almost never do. Then when I explain to them that their 4 tardiness and 2 absences in the last month don't help their cause, the response is always "when I'm here I bust my butt."

I remember as a child asking for help at homr and have very negative responses everytime, so i developed a fear of asking for help and as a coping mechanism, i promised myself to do thing, on my own, not to depend on others and also seek solutions on my own/by myself... At work, i managed to swim in the field of asking to learn because i understood that if i knew how to do things as the company expects, i'd be better for the company and that lead to a thriving and growing more interdependant dynamic UNTIL my quick learning and ambition became a botheration and that took me to point zero again... affecting me morally, emotionally and mentally. I stayed under all that black cloud too long, i should have made my case give deadline and elope if no positive outcome. So i admire the youngsters that just are really off to somewhere else. I find it somehow ironic for Simon to say this OR perhaps the problem is this particular short taken from a bigger interview 😉 The TOP people need to be more human to begin with. Care for those who work for them, as they are the ones who form the business.... While the TOP dont get educated in human skills... it is going to be easier to blame the Z or whoever... and THAT is not right. Sure the young generation lacks... why is that? ther were not taught but some of the TOP have invented apps that feed that lack!!! Let us be honest and transparent here! Invest in your people through training, be a good example to the young, edify and dont point at them... because when you do, 3 of your very own fingers are pointing back at you!

Here’s the problem I have with his assessment. He says about 3 minutes in that when GenZ doesn’t get what they need from the relationships they have at work, they turn to social media and other places. He’s looking at it backwards. By the time they enter the workforce, their perception of reality has been significantly impacted by the messages they have been receiving on social media, which primarily make things look good and easy and exciting and fun. They aren’t turning to social media after they’ve been disappointed by work; they come to work with wrong impressions of hard work and reality because the images they’ve been consuming make life look easy, conflict-free and successful.

I was never taught by anyone how to be an adult. I had heard outdated terms like “balancing checkbooks” in school from teachers but to this day I don’t even know what that is. I wasn’t taught what to do when in a car accident. I trusted my lawyer and ended up loosing money and my car. I was devastated and wasted years of my life in depression. I couldn’t afford to get help. I wasn’t taught about credit scores. I was taught that life as an adult was one thing when in reality it was another. I’m a millennial btw. Do you think Gen Z grew up on the internet watching babies talk? No, they grew up with older people advising them. Millennials and everyone older than that.

As they socialize especially with people at work, they continue having a lot of problems in communication. That is clear that we have raised those young people. We absolutely miss out a big thing that is able to make them more equipped to deal with stress. We have to seek those mechanisms and make them better from the start.

I value Simon's views, and in most cases I find his words to be correct. However, I believe that making some of these labels is not correct, and not isolated to Gen Z. Why do Gen Z seem impatient? Because there are countless number of videos all over showing people become successful in a short amount of time, becoming self-employed, and finding success through social media, being an "influencer", and being entrepreneurs. After being constantly under the influence of these success stories, does anyone want be part of the typical mainstream 9-5 job where the possibilities are "work out a plan with your boss for 8 months, then being told that budget cuts and the business not being successful is why at the end of 8 months, we cannot give you that raise?". Maybe the issue is the lack of trust in the supervisor or corporation in wanting to invest 8 more months? Why can't the boss say, you want that raise, what about an incremental raise or perks that you receive every two months? The reality, and this is obviously my opinion, is that I don't promote what Simon is saying in this video. Gen Z, if you're listening, be your own boss, get that money, get that 100% raise that you give yourself by being a entrepreneur and an influencer, and don't buy into that old way of thinking that you need to work for someone or some business to be successful. As far as being a Gen Z thing, we have more self-employed people worldwide that are not so willing to get into that 9-5 with broken promises and layoffs when companies "do not meet their arbitrary goals" as Simon so eloquently stated in another video. Blaming Gen Z is incorrect. The real issue that companies now need to face the reality that they are no longer the only viable solutions, and that their competitors are all the ways in which people can become self-employed. That is the real issue. That these companies are competing with jobs where we can choose our own hours, how much of the profit we get paid as someone that is self-employed, choosing when we get to take our vacation instead of putting in our hours and letting our boss decide and in some cases using that as a way to leverage power over us, and being able to work from home or anywhere we want with our own online businesses. Gen Z is not to blame. Corporations are now getting the wake up call that people have other options and in many cases, way better options.
@aztronomy7457
@aztronomy7457 Жыл бұрын
I’m actually happy that many of you guys are going the influencer/streamer route. Removes competition for me and increases my paycheck via demand. So you’re right, drop the 9-5 jobs and be an influencer :). 9-5 jobs aren’t so bad when you work remotely. I used to be a travel independent influencer who lived in Europe, but the job was very up and down. It went from being the best life ever to being the most stressful.I actually enjoy some stability now. So I wouldn’t shut out 9-5 jobs completely. Someone’s got to do them. Not everyone can be an influencer.

Simon is a smooth talker, he comes from marketing so he knows exactly what to say to make you let your guard down. Many people in life (Simon is exhibit A) will tell you what you want to hear in order to get from you what they want. First, it was the baby boomers hating on Gen X, then Gen X hating on millennials, and now apparently it's the millennials hating on Gen Z? I think we have it backward. I think another Human Skill that needs to be included in today's generation is "How to navigate through failures". We see more guidance on going after success, being the best and achieving goals. Gen Zs appear tough on the outside, they talk back a lot, very opinionated. But we can see how fragile and crumbly they are in the face of defeat. It's easy for most of them to fall into the trap of overthinking and over self-reflecting to the point of wallowing. Navigating through tough times and overcoming and bouncing back should taught, too.

There are three major factors here in my opinion 1. The generation before us could survive waaaaaay more easily on the wages they recieved. In the 70,s you could drive a truck, make 20k a year and a house costed 40k, think about how expensive real estate is now. It’s soooo much harder now 2. Technology has given people more freedom, but has vastly increased the complexity of work for everyone, a job out of college has waaay more responsibilities than one did 40 years ago. Even Jobs that don’t pay well have all kinds of responsibilities now, it’s too much. We aren’t built to be responsible for 20 things at once 3. The generation before us equates toughness with allowing themselves to embrace being treated like shit in the workplace. You are literally like a dog or cat to your boss, come here, sit down, do this or that, shut up, etc. the newer generation doesn’t, there’s a major difference in culture

I work in higher education, and in my 25 years there, I have never seen so many parents of adult students coming to fight with professors because their son/daughter failed a course! Really? they failed cause they did not do the work; they failed because they thought if they said that they had "anxiety and stress," the profs would pass them. Life does not work like this, no matter where you live. They need to learn to be accountable, resilient and flexible. Entitlement is not confidence; it's the opposite.

i get this truthfully i do as i'm only 23. I know how to ask for things and I'm ok with quitting if I feel it best for me. I also couldn't care less if people call me soft for doing so. He talks about being black or white and honestly most gen Z believe that is the best way of doing business. Think about it, why is “professional talk” so unnecessarily wordy? Why can’t I just let you know that I would like a raise. It’s not as yes or no as he said. If you tell us that there's a plan or set of actions needed to be done in order to get the raise; then let that be your reply. If the employee doesn’t like that then that's unfortunate. Every generation improves something that that generation believes the previous could have done better. And everytime the generations before ridicule them for it “because it makes them soft” when that's not the case it's just that as humans grow there are less and less struggles we should have to face. And even if we are getting soft, why does it matter if along the way we are bettering society one gen at a time. The thing that these people don't understand, which is weird because they went through it too, is that the younger generation don't just use our experiences when making decisions we use the experience we observe around us. And with the added lens of the internet we see a bunch more than past generations. Which is not a shot at them, it's just the fact they didn't have this tool like we do. Example if I'm in a line and at the end of the line there are three doors. And every person in front of me has to choose between those three doors but all doors lead to different destinations. I'm not going into the door where most people come out beaten and battered. I’ll go into the one that releases the more positive results.I do that in my real life as each time I closed a door the next I open always ended up doing me better. But if i listened to these people and tried to "push through the troubles" all id be is miserable.

I'm a Gen Z and all my life i have been very forgiving of peoples actions and behavior towards me. But there comes a point where peace doesn’t bring you any comfort and that is where changes happen. I'm a lover and i love to help people but from what i understand, people behave differently based on how they grew up and got on with life. You can't expect a violent criminal to be a saint if he/she was raised in a challenging environment. You also can't expert a child to grow up and become a healthy adult if there are restrictions and circumstances limiting their growth. I blame no generation for how society is the way it is today but all i can say is that instead of pointing fingers, find the underlying cause and for ourselves find a way to make things better. It is natural for the younger to look up to older, so as a 27 year old i will only look for good examples from my elders. And i know definitively that the younger generation around me look up to their elders so i will always lead by example. I may not have my life all together but it is my attitude towards life and people that makes the difference. Im not 100% perfect but i can guarantee we all want what is better for ourselves and life as a whole.

I would love to see more data in these talks. You're making these sweeping generalizations about an entire generation by sharing anecdotal examples. It's easy for these stories to appeal to the emotions of people who already agree with you. But, without substantial proof, you're sharing information that presents nearly 2 billion people as being exactly the same. People listen to you and this is just another form of black and white thinking.

I'm not saying there's no research on it, but I want to know where *his* information is coming from so I can examine if I think those studies are valid or biased. And the "Google it" response from people making ridiculous claims is lazy and tired. Frankly, I doubt that there's a study that says that a majority even a large portion of Gen Z asks for a 50% raise after 8 months or quit because they felt (unjustly) undervalued. There's no way of gathering that data without bias from the companies. Especially now with the cost of living so high, there are companies that pay terribly and young people don't want to work with them. That is completely justified. If you need a 50% raise for survival, then you should leave. The worker's perspective wouldn't be included in the data if the company is supplying it and the sample size for the research is so small it couldn't speak for 2 billion people.

I don't ask for raises because I expect that management (boomers) will recognize it. They typically don't do regular reviews or merit based promotions, they weren't taught the skills. . how do we expect those over-employed leaders to teach the next generations? Instead of asking for a raise I ask for more PTO, cuz getting paid to not be at work is much more valuable and sustainable than growing the economy.
@mtngrl5859

That thinking will keep you underpaid. This is a problem for many people of all ages, women in particular. We all want to be recognized for our talents, but when one is running an organization, there are a lot of details to handle. Knowing that many younger people and women don't know or are uncomfortable negotiating, I have clearly outlined economic review dates. I'm not in the tech sector, but am surrounded by a strong tech economy. So from the beginning, they know how their income will increase. I also give them financial goals for the business, if my business increases X amount, they get a share of it. Again, this all in writing, I want my employees to be invested in my growth. When we have the review date, it is held not at the company, but at a discrete restaurant. The idea is to remove the power grid away from the office, a restaurant is a neutral location. In addition, I have a very generous vacation plan for employees who stay with me 3+ years (all have), this keeps them happy and on point. I knew over 30 years ago that I couldn't flourish in a corporate structure, so I went into business for myself. There were some really tough years and I can say with honesty, I might have made more money when one considers that I have to provide my own health care and benefit package. But it isn't always exclusively about the money.

That example is actually a perfect one to show why they are confrontation avoided. Here is why: it shows that they are confrontation avoidant because the last thing they want to do is create a conflict with the person they work with every single day, so they go to the person above, whom they have no personal connection to to present their demands, knowing full well, the weight that they can add to their direct supervisor or manager, without having to be personally attached in any way to the person they are talking to.

Eh, they say that about every generation. I'm a elder millennial and entered the workforce in 2006. I recall the big thing about our generation then was expecting a huge entry salary and big job promotion after a year's hard work. It seems like GenZ are now managed by my generation of people and yeah, it's facing a new hurdle. When I was growing up, my generation watched those 80s flicks where some college grad goes into the workforce and immediately changes the entire culture of the place and causes a huge uproar with upper management. Movies like Big, and various other similar ones. So yeah we had a lot of (unrealistic) expectations going into our first job out of college. It seems like GenZ are influenced mostly by social media and being your own boss and not taking things too seriously but at the same time expecting huge salary for doing practically nothing but sitting around. It's this generation's unrealistic expectation. Who knows what the next generation will expect going into the workforce.

Also, our entire work environment is based on contingency, disposability, flexibility....managers are NEVER going to be rewarded for spending time on people development since it is un-quantifiable, subjective and not directly profit-generating. Companies no longer see employees as participants in generating revenue, they see them as raw materials to an abstracted business "program". We won't be going back to lip service that people matter....only credit card charges clearing matter, and management will say what is needed to keep that going, and prevaricate on EVERYTHING else, showing no honest intent to action on something that doesn't personally benefit them. You need to be more intellectually honest about what is going on in corporate incentives and executive culture to see that trickle down prosperity (emotionally or financially) does not exist in the US for at least 25 years now.

It was designed to weed out the weak. Was it bad? It certainly was extremely unpleasant but then again the business operated without skipping a step because anyone who made it through that could cope with anything. At the time I resented it but now I know it made me strong enough to deal with anyone and any situation. I see a generation scared of rejection, confused, lacking self confidence and I wonder how much that comes from living in a softer environment. When i ask for a payrise, i don't ask for it to be increased in 8 months, i ask for it to be increased now because i consider my previous work as enough for it. I don't even know where i will be in 8 months lol. Also, most of the times we have better options ready. I my self switched jobs so much times that i cant even count it, majority of the times i asked for a big payrise i was ready to quit because i already had a position in other place that would give me what i want. Its very simple, if i dont get what i want from you, i will get it from someone else, and that strategy has worked perfectly well for me. Job hopping simply works much better than fighting with boss and making a "path" of almost a whole year to get where i want to be now. In one year that wont be enough for me and then we will have to start new "path" and the boss will be like "oh but you just got the raise". No, i just got the raise that i wanted a year ago, now its different.
