I repaired a corroded one of these - had to lift the chips and buzz out tracks that no longer existed. Some buttons including the cal button didn't work. With no schematic I compared the pushbutton circuitry to another meter in the same range to see what bodge wires were needed and it's now been my go-to meter for years. Great meter.

I just bought a Fluke 187 new old stock multimeter that included sealed paperwork and original test leads, calibration spot on. This is a great addition to my work bench, and rugged, (love it).

Now that was an awesome salvage right there. Happy New Year.

Awsome!,, think I seen this video several times and always enjoy it 😁 I do own two 189's and one 187 among other Fluke meters... but those are definitely my favorites 👍

Hi...Can you show a video on how to replace the buzzer of this meter? I dont know how to remove the screen of this meter to remove the buzzer because the buzzer is defective...its not a solid buzzing sound when I use continuity function...thanks...

If you don't mind, what was the 20KV source he hooked it up to?
@SoddingaboutSi6 жыл бұрын
The 20KV came from a power supply that drives the final anode on the CRT HUD of the Typhoon Eurofighter.

Thanks for that bit of information.

great repair. I have a 289 which is in many aspect similar to this. Can you make a video about the calibration of this? Could you briefly explain how you generated the calibration voltages and currents? it's not that easy unless you have one of those very expensive calibration generators
@SoddingaboutSi6 жыл бұрын
I have a Ronan voltage calibrator for the low voltage stuff, any other Voltages and Currents are set on my Agilent 34401a and used as a reference. Generally these meters stay in calibration forever. In this case however all the cal constants were lost.
@amirb7156 жыл бұрын
but how did you manage the 50V/500V 700Hz AC and 50/500V DC that are required for calibration? plus the precision AC currents at 700Hz and DC?
@SoddingaboutSi6 жыл бұрын
Using a apn 6s generator through a step up tx. AC currents with a standard resistor and load. I doubt it is t the same level of accuracy as FLuke claim but at least it's a working meter.

I have a 187 that has issues with the carbon pad contacts - where can I source the silver paint? Best Regards!

There are kits avalable to repair these switches. Check ebay but I know RS do them.

How to change green led backlight in fluke 179 to white led backlight. I searched many titles for find that to this case but I can’t find anything about it. I hope you record a video about it and share with us. Thanks for reading my comment. 👍🏽 good job

Nice fix Simon. His loss is your gain! Looks like a great meter with pretty much all the functions you could ask for. Fancy a Fluke 77 to calibrate? All the best, Graham
@SoddingaboutSi8 жыл бұрын
Radiocruncher It is a nice meter Graham. The 77 is simple to calibrate. only one pot. use your dvm as a reference and calibrate on the 300 mV range at around 150mV.
@Radiocruncher8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon. I meant to say It's a Fluke 75. I have compared it to my Keysight meter and it's pretty close. I will give it a try on the mV range

no thats not what im driving at. in the 70s i worked as diesel mech for hauage comp, the tranport manager left and the replcement s only qualification was that he had been in the Guards, the owner was ex army, went bust 2 yrs after i left.
@lusher002 жыл бұрын
20kv? There is a safety video on KZbin of someone dying as the result of measuring 4kv I believe.
@absurdengineering4 жыл бұрын
Isn’t someone like that “20kV cowboy” a bit of a liability? Next thing he’ll be measuring a 1.5kV distribution panel somewhere and there’ll be a low source impedance transient high enough to break down the meter and he’ll have a ball of plasma instead of a meter… these meters have limits as to the source short circuit current capacity they can deal with. Make it too high and the whole meter is a fuse.
@hrxy18 жыл бұрын
way too expensive, but nice repair and good tip re silver paint, does he get paid more than u?
