As it happens, almost everything I know about Final Cut and Motion I learned just by trying stuff out and teaching myself ... and reading the manuals. Trying stuff out is absolutely the best way of learning, I think. And it's also the best way of coming up with original ideas, so it's a double bonus!

Simon Ubsdell I've been working with final cut for a few years now so I guess I'm pretty good at it, but I only got into motion a little while ago so I guess you've got a head start there :D But yeah, learning by doing is almost always the best way of learning!

I think it's more true to say that motion graphics and compositing are processes that are quite bit more complex than editing - After Effects is a lot harder than Premiere too. Once you've mastered an editing application, there's really not a lot left to learn apart from the creative subtleties, whereas mastering an application like Motion means learning a lot of background technical theory along with which buttons to press. And more importantly, each project can involve thinking up a new strategy ... But hey, that's why it's such an interesting subject.

@SimonUbsdell4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The simplest fix is to remove the color linking process altogether because it is subject to a known Apple bug - and loads of people ran into the problem you did. Instead all you need to do is to apply a Colorize filter to the master group and use that to set the overall colour.

Strange issue: I follow along and everything is awesome. When I try to put the Box and Text groups into the ALL group the IMAGE MASK on the color solid looses it's source (Clone Layer) and won't let me add it back. Does that sound like a bug or am I screwing something up?

Correction: It's when I add the link behavior to the Text Layer. That kills the image mask on the color solid. Strange. I think I'll just publish the color of the box and text separately. Thanks for all your Tutorials. They are VERY HELPFUL!

Gotcha. Thanks! Is it possible to publish the start/end positions of the animated mask? I've modified the project from your tutorial to be adjustable in size and width, but unless I can add the start/end position it's limited to how wide it can be...

Every time I drag the groups “text” and “box” into the “all” group towards the end, the animated mask stops showing up. It is working and the text opened and closes on the x axis, but the coloured box that goes with it doesn’t show, the opacity is still at 100 but I’ve no clue how to fix it

Thank you for another great tutorial - have learned a huge amount following these. On this one, however, I have come across a problem - all is working fine but when linking text colour to colour solid and publishing, the animated box disappears! It appears that saving the project removes the text as the source of the top image mask. I can reinstate the effect by removing the colour link. My workaround was to publish the text and box colours separately, which is fine as it gives a bit more flexibility when using the title in Final Cut. Wondered if you had any views on why that issue cropped up? (If you have the time!!)

I haven't been working with 5.3 for long and I ran into some very serious issues when trying out versions of this project. I didn't encounter the specific problem you have done, but I did have two others which I have certainly never seen before and I have been using Motion 5 from its launch. I suspect that something has been broken in 5.3 but I haven't yet been able to pin it down. I'll have another look and see if I can find any clues. Meanwhile do report any suspicious activity to Apple!

Had a question. Tutorial worked fine for me, except one thing. When the title is brought in FCP the background image is there. I noticed that in your FCP segment the title laid over the main FCP video. I can cause it to work by making the background image invisible when saving in Motion. But then the FCP preview has no background. What did I miss? Thanks. Love your tutorials.
@SimonUbsdell6 жыл бұрын
Your Title Background layer should be empty (shwoing a downwards facing arrow on a grey background) - if it's not clear, then go to the Inspector/Image and hit the Clear button. This will clear any temporary image you might have loaded into this layer. If this is not the answer, please email me your Motion project to: support@tokyo-uk.com
@rdavis05216 жыл бұрын
Wow. Getting a response from the author is awesome, but an offer to look at my project. Amazing. Thank you. I will send you the project file. I did double check (and clear) the title background layer as you described. But, my temporary background was not "IN" the title background, but I believe it's a layer above it, as per your demo above. See around 9:50. In Group1 you have a background image (KaramaBeach) above the title background. As you enter into FCP in this video (around 11:30) I see that the title background in the preview in the inspector is not Karama Beach, but some other background. And when you place it into your FCP project, the background is transparent.
@SimonUbsdell6 жыл бұрын
@@rdavis0521 Ah, thanks for clarifying. I'd forgotten I'd done that. So in that case simply delete that layer from your project and you should en fine. If not, please do let me have a look at your project.
@rdavis05216 жыл бұрын
Oops. In looking at the FCP part of the demo more closely, (around 11:30), I see that there are actually two title files there. One is BoxTextReveal (which is in the FCP timeline), and then CleanTextReveal (with KaramaBeach background). Still same issue, however. My background image from the Motion file is visible when dropped into my FCP timeline above main video.
@rdavis05216 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad I'm not crazy. But, still confused that your titles in the FCP title sidebar do show a background. When I delete that layer, I have a black preview (until I skim to where text becomes visible).

Thank you so much, Simon. Really enjoyed this one. I wonder if it's that hard to make the Build in and Outs not mandatory, meaning, will it cause crazy- undesirable results when the Title is lengthened or shortened in FCPX? Thanks again.
@SimonUbsdell7 жыл бұрын
The only reason for making them Mandatory is to ensure that the duration of the animation stays fixed regardless of how long you make the title in FCP X. If you're not that bothered about that, then you can make them optional or leave them out altogether. I would say that the method suggested in the follow-up tutorial is the better way to go, however.
@BenjaminGib7 жыл бұрын
Simon Ubsdell - Most definitely. I was just wondering is it that hard to make the build in and outs actually adjustable in FCPX, because I'm sure I would want that flexibility and option while I'm in FCPX.
@SimonUbsdell7 жыл бұрын
No, I'm afraid you can' make them adjustable in FCP X. But I do think that the method I recommend in the follow-up tutorial gives you all the flexibility you could need, since it allows full control over the timing which means you don't really have to worry about the limits of Build In/Out .. unless you were wanting the incoming or outgoing animation to last for longer than half the title duration, which would be pretty strange in this instance.

Funky - especially the link behaviour
@SimonUbsdell7 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, Any ideas why some users are having issues with the colour linking? A better plan would have been to link the Color Solid to the Text Face Color, but that's all messed up in 5.3 ... I haven't been using 5.3 for very long at all, but it's all feeling a bit flaky to me. Has it been alright for you?
@Alex4DGollner7 жыл бұрын
Motion has been OK - a few new bugs, but worth it. Think the way they've done text style runs in text has changed and not fully debugged. To avoid all that, the "All" group could be colourised with the 'Colorize' filter (linking 'Remap Black' to 'Remap White' and publishing 'Remap White')
@SimonUbsdell7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would be one way of doing it. I was actually thinking of using the Clone text as an additional matte for the Color Solid which would have been the most elegant way of doing it though. I was planning on a more elaborate version of this but ran into some very odd issues that I haven't seen before so I'm not convinced that all is well in 5.3-Land.
@Alex4DGollner7 жыл бұрын
I imagine that you can planned to add an Align To behaviour to make the shape centre match that of the text. Not generally well known are a few new options in the Link parameter behaviour. As you have probably already discovered you can now link the Rectangle.Object.Shape.Size.All to the extent of the type in the text box which is Text Box.Object Attributes.Size.All Motion sticklers would also require that you replace keyframe animation with behaviours!
@SimonUbsdell7 жыл бұрын
Yes, all good points. It's a shame one can't link the Start/End of a Ramp behavior to anything otherwise one could have a fully automated version of this! Better still is if Apple would just listen to me and add expressions - there's a really simple way of doing it. Not going to happen, but we can dream.
