I was so invested in your thumb, I had to find a video where it was okay. Glad it worked out for ya! AND BIG Thank you for the website you mentioned for hand trauma. I actually had a little mandolin accident, a few years back, which was a bloody mess but fortunately it just cost me a scar; it's 1000% worth having bookmarked the page for future emergencies, thank you!

Great to see you back, I too have been wondering about your thumb and have checked nearly every day thinking the worst. Glad to see the positive results. Also, noticed you went with a Sawstop, which is a great choice. Please be aware that cutting small pieces on a chop/miter saw can pull the piece into the throat of the saw and take your hand with it. There is a special inexpensive tool to hold down small pieces and keep your hands out of the path of the blade. I do not mean to be making a pun here, but, there is an excellent wood-working channel called "Stumpy Nubs" that has information on this and other safety tools. He is a real pro and a wealth of information. "The most important chop saw accessory" published May 12, 2021. All my best to you.

I think the art work is interesting and I like the combination of textures and colors. I think it is simple and elegant. The first thing to do accomplish when learning anything new is to jump in to it. That's how we learn. Good for you!

Yes! As you saw, my thumb lived. It doesn't bend, and I don't have a ton of sensation in it, but it's still there and generally acting like a thumb! I don't need to have any more surgeries, and overall I'm thrilled.

@@AButterflyHouse Gosh, this makes me happy. Saw injuries really freak me out. Plus I know what it is like to live with injured &/or uncooperative hands. Such a pain in the neck for a DIYer.

Try using multiple colors in the resin but dont mix too much for the swirly parts. Mix a big base coat with a color that you want (blue for example) only add a tiny bit. You dont want to color the resin, just slightly tint it. You can mix this well. Then just before you pour, add two or three colors and gently swirl them in, dont fully mix, just do a few slight turns to get in into the resin, only one or two. Then pour it and it should work similar to one of those acrylic pours.

Screw the sander, this 'like' is for you. It's a cool project, and a neat idea. Both the design and the resin. I've been seeing a lot of videos of epoxy-coated counter tops. Your experience proves it's tougher than it looks. On the other hand, you still got some neat effects out of it. Just tell everyone that that was your intention all along. (And delete this video so no one will know😹) I'm glad you've bounced back from your injury, too!

Messing up angles is pretty easy. Don't ask how I know. After almost losing your thumb, please use "something" to hold the wood close to the blade. Some push sticks, either self made or delivered with some plainers or table saws could probably work.
@rtd17912 жыл бұрын
You could do something similar with paper and then it would be lighter. Stacked and glued paper is similar enough to wood in this application. Plus I could use my electronic die cutter; no scary saws. I often substitute some form of papier-mâché for wood. I’m familiar with paper not so much with wood. And yes, in case anyone wonders, you can still use resin. I understand the aesthetic choice to make the background level with the design but I think I would like different levels. I once made my mum tangram planters and filled them with paper plants so her cats wouldn’t destroy the plants nor poison themselves. The planters could still be rearranged so the game was playable.

I got the wood in the video from Forest Products Supply in Maplewood! It was last summer, so things may have changed, but they had a pretty nice cutoff section at the time. It was a bit confusing, since most pieces didn't have prices, but when I asked the guy basically shrugged and charged me $1-2 each.

Resin it self is the finish coat, it just has to be polished off. A fiberglass bathtub, sink, ect. Is finished in what they call a gelcoat, and all that is, is resin and a pigment (coloring). They also use the same stuff in auto body repair. I'm sure there's a chanel or two on youtube that will show how to fix a fiberglass car body
@rtd17912 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of resin channels that show how to do this as well. I subscribe to two of them. It’s just a clear pour.
