Today I'm painting a beginner friendly loose landscape using a limited palette, indigo, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. The idea is to try to let go and paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for plenty of subtle drama, with a hanging wood on a hillside, gate and fence, loosely painted and kept really simple. It looks challenging, but it is a simple and exciting process that will probably take a bit of practice, but is really useful for getting beginners used to the way water and paint can flow on the page, and using rich paint to obtain balanced tonal values with plenty of darks, while keeping things fresh and light.
I'm using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.

I've always shied away from alizarin crimson because it's not colorfast but the beauty of the color is saying to break down and get it anyway. Love how it interacts with the indigo and yellow ochre!
@LoisDavidsonArt
@LoisDavidsonArt 2 жыл бұрын
However these days most Alizarin reds are substitutes, you need to look at the pigment number and avoid genuine alizarin reds if the lightfast issue concerns you. My Cotman AC is PR 206, a fully lightfast quinacridone red pigment synthesised to imitate AC

Stunning work, Lois 👌👌👌 Though you call it semi-abstract, it is not difficult to imagine a real world scenery like this. The red hue in an otherwise cloudy/misty atmosphere adds a sense of eerie excitement. And what can I say about the education that you impart in each video🙏
