Hey! Just realized after a few years that people actually watched the video. Glad if you liked it. For people wondering about the accent: I am german, but as i can not speak english without an accent, i had the weird idea to make it as extreme as possible. From todays viewpoint it is kind of cringe.

This is far better than most RPG mass combat videos I've watched for ideas. Thank you for being succinct.

Me at the start of video: Oh ha, that's an interesting voice to greet your audience with, I guess everyone has a unique way of doing it. Me half way through the video: oh.

I really like the damage multiplier die idea. It makes a lot of sense, quickens things up, and covers for the wonky notion of rolling one attack for a group of 10. Great video!

I tried to make homebrew rules for an upcoming session and came up with something similar, but since I'm relatively inexperienced I wanted to see what others had to say. Glad to see someone more experienced advises a more comprehensive and elegant version of what I was thinking.

This is a very simple effective system indeed. Just what I was searching for !

Ah! Thank you for this, I have been trying to adapt the battlesystem unearthed arcana to feel more like it has large groups of soldiers (the stats for a group are identical to a single creature in battlesystem) but I didn't want combat to take forever, your system of multiplying the damage of a unit by 1d10 is rather elegant
@Rebelcommander62 жыл бұрын
This is very similar to a system I plan to use for my upcoming Sea Raiders Campaign. But multiplying the attack damage by 1d10 is a great idea! Thank you very much!

Love it thank you so much! The system really makes units like bards and war masters stand out!

If you've every played Warhammer 40k apocalypse, making mass combat out of it and old school chainmail rules runs pretty smooth

Personally, when it comes to the multiplier, I add the attack modifer of the attack and subtract (the AC of the target - 10/2)

I like to use the number of fighters as hit points and just use the original damage stat. Only larger units would have hit points of 2 or more per fighter

I made specialized units that the party could fight 1 on 1 to add some extra flare, like an undead army with a vampire knight commander, they would fight the commander individually through traditional combat

If you fail to hit the AC then nobody in the unit hits? And what about terrain, formations, and fortifications?
@ficamnuzone70523 жыл бұрын
Thanks This rule is make sense and good and all, I have questions how about the PC include on the unit how to calculate that and also how about if the PC choose to go and fight alone?

There are two major problems I see with this. 1st space. 10 people take up squares and that matters. You can only fit so many people in a space and the party needing to work around a mob drastically changes tactics. Poor space representation will allow single target spells and attacks will slay many opponents making higher level abilities irrelevant. 2nd is mob races like kobold and goblins reley very heavily on rolling tons of attacks and and regardless of how strong the enemy is some will be 20s. Their entire play style is based on the sheer number of possible attacks possible. One attack of 10 or even 20 characters decimated a mobs chance to actually hit someone. At its core I get what the idea is trying to do but it needs to take mob tactics and space into better consideration.

Might as well just port your favourite war game into D&D. I also think that a unit of 10 would always be doing some amount of damage, even when they're losing - maybe just incur a severe penalty to damage when they miss the armor class. Or turn AC into damage reduction altogether; and that way, there's less RNG, and more room for player strategy (but that's only if you wanted to design an actual war game of your own).
@mistermistah33802 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I think running combat similar to warhammer would be better - because if you ruin your attack swing at the onset - all 10 people lose the opportunity to do damage, which doesn't seem realistic. Imagine having 10 foot soldiers that charge the enemy - and not a single one does damage to anyone after the charge (not realistic). I think rolling 10 d20 to see how many hit is a better way... then rolling X number of D8 (x being the number that had a successful attack).

Where did the +5 bonus to hit come from?

3 of it comes from the Str mod the fighter has, while the remaining 2 comes from a fighter being proficient with all types of weapons
