Would love to see one of those 'meat suspended above water' traps set out near one of these ground nests the day before, see how empty the nest is when dug out. If it depopulates the nest, that could be a way to make them safer when they're near human dwellings.

I live in the western oregon coast range near Mary's Peak and have noticed this year has been WAY worse for yellowjackets than previous years. I've had to get rid of 5 ground nests, at least a dozen or so small terrestrial nests, and a bald faced hornet nest the size of a basketball.

I've volunteered at a train museum and I've got to say, I have never seen so many yellowjackets this years. I mean, it's bad.

I live a bit north of you in the coast range and too have notices that there are way more yellow jackets this year compared with previous years. For in ground nests i just wait until the sun goes down and the pour about a cup of gasoline down the entrance. That effectively kills the nest. No need to set it afire - the gas just does the trick.
@nyersa1 Жыл бұрын
@@bobdunstan5457 Yea my grandfather used to use diesel way back but I'd rather not be putting that stuff in the ground. I've been using Sevin dust now after dark, a little shake on the top of the nest and every one of em is dead by the end of the next day. I'd rather not really leave the insecticide laying around either but the yellow jackets are too much of a safety issue to not deal with them.

Just watched your video.Great info & entertainment. When I was a kid growing up on the farm and in town we had "Paper Wasps" at both locales year after year, Grundy County, IL. In Field Mice nests, under eaves, on tree limbs. I never attempted to deal with the ones twenty feet or higher but the others I'd pour gas down the holes & fire them up-- occasionally having a decent explosion. The hanging nests I'd get down with a long pruning tool and hit them with the flame thrower. Nice and toasty! Thanks again Shawn.

If you need to knock down a nest, don't use bug spray -- use WD40. The wasps are too busy suffocating to come after you, and they won't build another nest in that spot. (I sprayed my rafters with WD40 and no more nests, even years later.)
@ImRandomDude Жыл бұрын
GJ spraying petroleum distillates into ground. By that logic lets cover entire field with WD40, no more wasps... Do you also dispose motor oil into hole in ground covered with stones - like it was recommended in some 1950s book?

I found a yellow jacket nest going into one of my walls next to my backdoor. They stung the heck out of me when i went to move some buckets i had there. I set up a bug zapper next to the entrance at night and which i turn on at dawn and have left it on all day. The thing has killed hundreds and hundreds in 2 days. I had no idea there were so many living there! They just attack it all day long and destroy themselves launching at it. They then retreat to the nest for the night and next day use the same strategy and launch themselves at it. Very satisfying......
