Simple Fix for a Boat Power Trim Not going Up or Down (Boat Trim Not Working) 2 Stroke

Replacing the Relay on a Johnson 120 ‘96 Model. There’s 2 boxes and 2 plugs. One is for the “trim down” and the other is “trim up”. If one or both of these go bad it will disable your trim. Always check these boxes first before you put it in the shop. This guy probably saved me hundreds of dollars.

To get motor to move where you need it to in "emergency", I believe you can swap the solenoids to get the motor to trim up or down (assuming 1 of your 2 solenoids is good).

Thanks for this video. I have a old 125 tracker by mercury and this was my fix! You saved me some money with this quick $20 part swap and now I have trim again!

Happening to my 225 vindicator. Go up to far it won’t come back down besides relief valve. Think fluid is low for now. But thinking to do your trick anyways

My trim goes up and down from the throttle but only goes up from the motor. Any idea as to why it won’t go down from the motor?

Mine is the other way around? Motor trim works up and down but throttle trim only works up? Any ideas?

Hello! I have problems too with my downtrim...the uptrim works good,down doesn't nd when I push down I can't here any click apart from the click from the button...it could be the same problem u had? Thank u nd greetings from Romania, Europe!!!

Easy fix might be a bad connection to the battery, or a switch. If theirs two switches then it’s not that. Could possibly be the power trim motor.

Thats not a solinoid, its a Relay

How do you test them?

I just troubleshoot them by swapping them with one that I know works and the switch works as well. Also will use both the switch on my controller and the one on the outboard itself. Mainly just trial and error but I’m sure there’s probably other ways that more electronically inclined people know.

hey bud, my downtrim isnt working, but uptrim is, evinrude 50hp. working fine up until i hit a sandbar & found i have corroded wires that have been replaced. Still no downtilt but have uptilt. kindve stumped. Still possible relay?

Hello and thanks for the question. You can test if it’s a relay by swapping them and seeing if the down trim is working and the up is not. If still the same outcome it might be the harness. I have a video after this one where I replaced that part. Good luck, hope it works.
