Levelling the tripod isn’t that important, remember your tracking in two axis so as long as your polar alignment is bang on, levelling doesn’t really play into it, just saying. Try it out one night.

I found leveling very important when using a one-axis star tracker with only RA guiding. With 2-axis guiding, it might not be as important, but still, it's worth leveling your setup to avoid any stability issues during the whole night session, especially when using light portable tripod.

So, I've got my eq5 mount and refractor set up. Do I find my desired target (eg Orion first) and then set up the guide scope via PHD 2 to a nearby star? Confused. Many thanks

As of my understanding, different ambient temperatures require different darks frames. Does this single darks library suit all the temperatures, or do I need to retake the darks on let's say colder nights?

When you want to frame a new object and you stop your previous guiding do you have to disconnect your mount from PHD2 and connect It to NINA or they can both remain connected at the same time?

Great video about auto guiding with PHD2. Do you think I could plate solve using my planetary camera ASI 224MC with a small guide scope like the one you show? I want to use the three points polar alignment from NINA which works using ASTAP plate solve.
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't see why not. As long as you tell NINA your effective focal length so that Nina can send correct commands to Astap.

So, I have a Celestron Nextstar 5se with a focal length of 1250mm. I understand that the focal length of the guider should be between 1/4 and 1/3 of the main scope. If this is correct, then I'm needing a guider 312mm - 420mm; is this correct?
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg, That sounds right. Although personally I'd be worried more about pixel scale than matching FL when it comes to guiding. Pixel scale is determined by FL and camera pixel size. What camera have you got? Try this formula: 0.2 x Guide Pixel Size(microns) x Imager Focal Length (mm)/ Divided by Imager Pixel Size (microns) So for me 0.2×3.75×714/5.2 = 102mm (ideal focal length) You want to make sure you are approx near that figure.

@@AstroOnbudget I am using a Nikon D3500 which has 3.92uM pixels. So, if I had your guide scope camera, I'd calculate: 0.2 X 3.75 X 1250 /3.92 => 240mm finderscope. That seem correct? Any thought towards color vs B/W finder camera?
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget 2 жыл бұрын
@@gregpronger5636 yes that sounds right. I'd go for mono because it's much more sensitive than colour.

Can you have scope connect to hand controller or we have to be connected to pc?
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget 11 ай бұрын
There are two ways of connecting to the mount: (1) Hand Controller and (2) EQMOD cable to computer. For astrophotography the second method is recommended.

Interesting. I just set up guiding and noticed I have to connect the guide camera to the mount. Is that necessary or is it enough to have the guide camera to PC then PC to Mount.
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget Жыл бұрын
There is a better way to do it. Experienced astrophotographers suggest that we don't connect guide scope to the mount. Instead we go via computer. Apparently using ST4 cable is slow and can cause confusion with PHD2

Great video. Subbed. I am keen to try guiding. Can I ask about mount connection. Is this camera to mount or camera to PC?
@AstroOnbudget
@AstroOnbudget 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, It's camera to PC connection. It's not really recommend to use camera to mount connection because it causes unnecessary delay. So essentially my PC is connected to the mount via Eqmod cable and then the wire from the back of the camera is connected to PC. Hope this makes sense ;)

@@AstroOnbudget great thank you. If your main image camera is dedicated astro camera you need 2 usbs in laptop?

@@captaincook6666 ideally you should have at least 3. One for Dedicated Cam, second one for guiding cam, third one for the mount. You can buy a good USB hub off Amazon that would do the job.
