Excellent tutorial!!! Definitely upped my game!!! Learned a lot about using Null layers and DUIK controls. Used DUIK v16.2.28. So at 19:16, when Jake turned off effects in C | 2D Slider, you'll find things are a little different in this version of DUIK. Here you'll need to turn off the effects in the C | Connector which this version of DUIK now creates. Worked like a charm! Thx Jake for sharing! Earlier this week I completed The DUIK 16 Jumpstart. Now I'm off to SkillShare to take Jake's Character Rigging with DUIK Bassel course. Woo-hoo!!!

Jake, this is BRILLIANT. From start to finish, not only did you teach me all I needed to know for my character rigging, you answered questions I had that most would have completely skimmed over in a tutorial. For example the extraction of the head rigging to the main body rigging, which I had set up thanks to your Skillshare class - (ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT BTW). Thank you thank you thank you!

Such a good tutorial, thank you. I've been using AE from quite a long time but nonetheless you've taught me some basals I hadn't know before and obviously, you have greatly explained all connectors secrets. I was doing a face rigging with you all the day and met some complications, fortunatelly solved then. My advice: at head properties it's better to keyframe shape path as a horizontal movement (to sculp cheeckbones, face profile etc). To make vertical movement it's enough to change Y position parameter. At the beginning I made it like you but then I need to emphasise cheecks and it was hard. Anyway, thank you so much. You do such a wonderful job! Keep on doing it

For hair at 2:02 , after having selected the two objects, you have to press ALT before clicking on " Subtraction ", otherwise it doesn't make a compound layer ! Have a nice day ! Pour les cheveux à 2:02 , après avoir sélectionné les deux objets, il faut appuyer sur ALT avant de cliquer sur " Soustraction ", sinon ça ne fait pas un calque de composition ! Bonne journée !

That's a really good tutorial, thank you! I have just a small critique which is regarding the movement of the ears. Whenever the head turns upwards, the ears should go downwards, and vice versa, in order to create a more 3d'ish illusion. However I realize that the specific design you prepared wouldn't work so good with this concept because then the contour lines won't align. I think this is something that should be taken in consideration when designing a character, but then again it's just a friendly advice. There are defiantly no rules when it comes to creativity. Thanks again, this helped me a lot!

Thanks so much for this amazing tutorial Jake! I'm about halfway through rigging the head at the moment and am just getting stuck parenting the expression at 32:30.

I use both duik and joysticks n’ sliders together in my workflow. Setting up a head rig in joysticks with a 5-pose system is much much faster and easier. You should check it out, it won’t do everything you want, but when used together, you really get the best of both worlds. If I only need a character that can look up, look right, turn head left and right I can rig it in 15 minutes by just animating the shape property. If I have a character that’s only on screen for one or two shots, Is in the background or if it has a limited range of motion joysticks and sliders really have saved me a lot of time.

This is such an amazing tutorial, and solidified my decision to try animating with AE. I'm a newbie, so please bear with me if it sounds confusing, but after doing all the rigging, is the actual animation done in the same file, or referenced/new composition'd out (as to keep the original file clean)? All for the sake of cleanliness, but you do mention it being more processor-heavy...
