It brings me great pleasure to release the first episode of Simpleken in 2024 with my close friend Kanan Gill. It's exciting to announce his first published novel "Acts of God" that is on sale right now on Amazon : shorturl.at/nLX45.
We talk about being trapped in blind spots, moisturising, recurring problems, self esteem , healthy relationship with work and suffering. As you can see, we covered a range of topics that most would call "alarming". Hope you enjoy this episode and hope you have a great new year ahead!

I have been seeing Kenny and Kanan for so long that I had this thought that - it is like Kenny is meeting a newer version of Kanan. Here's why I think that - in most of the previous talks they had, Kenny has been very protective of Kanan's self deprecating humour and always countered it with feel good thoughts about Kanan (like a supportive protective brother). And now in past few months or maybe year, Kanan has started to accept himself more which has made him be bold of who he is and how he perceive things. The growth Kanan has done is amazing! Love you both!

I self produce this show. It comes from genuinely being excited to do it rather than doing it like a job. That’s why every episode is legit special to me. It’s not me trying to tick make my content homework rather genuinely looking forward to talking about things that have been simmering in our minds :)

I think when people are not laughing at your jokes in both of your cases. They are just thinking deeply about what you are trying to convey. Because with Kanan's recent special i felt extremely at home. We are all in the same crisis. You made us think deeply about life. And I think you should simply put forth you ideas there is audience out there for every single thought! With the kind of intellectual and creative mindset you guys have. You cannot go wrong with your ideas. It is brilliant how you manage to share philosophical views through comedy. What an art form❤

Hey Kenny, long time fan. We are comics from Ahmedabad and grew up along with the Indian stand-up scene. We made a video dissecting Kanan's 'there is a cow' joke as a way of giving back to the stand-up community. As a fellow comedy nerd, I'm sure you'll love it.

Kanan sounds so much like David Lynch who says ideas are like fishing in the ether around you, you just need to catch it and when you do, you revel in it. I really enjoy people who truly enjoy their craft with depth and devotion. Even thinking about it makes me happy that he enjoyed every sentence flow through him like a moving picture. Hope to get my hands on the blossom soon.

Getting my hands on the book ❤ Congratulations to Kanan on becoming an Author 🎉 I love writing and I write almost everyday because I love it since I was in School and college and I have so much to write. Relatable to what Kannan used to go through in his college days. This podcast motivates me to continue writing even though I am currently in a career which is totally opposite to writing. Seeing Kannan's dream come true makes me feel that my dreams have come true ❤

Oh man, the part where kanan explains how he got to the process of writing this book is so fucking legit. I mean all of us do go through something like this, in whatever field we’re in, when we get a breakthrough, and it’s hard to explain it to someone else, ‘cause you know they’ll think you’re stupid. But damn, he made it sound like it’s so common! This is part of the reason why I love simple Ken! Insane man! Congrats to kanan on the book, can’t wait to read it and be mind blown! Thank you for a beautiful episode! I am 28 years old. It is exciting and challenging to describe, to some extent, the feeling of growing up with you. I remember I started following during my college days late BA-MA with Pretentious movie reviews, chai talks to you guys, getting your specials on Prime and Netflix to now asking the same existential questions and seeing you guys talk about it on screen. It's been almost 9+ years. I believe today's episode captures the decade's journey. I am a linguist (not a content creator, but the experiences you both shared still overlap). I have gone through marriage, divorce, depression, and moving to another country and life in general over the last decade, but you guys are passive companions. As Kanan mentioned, I feel it's pretty strange to be human, and we have unique problems, but at the same time, it feels like humans have been asking similar questions across time and space/ location, so we are not that unique. I am trying to figure out stuff, but “Yes, same bro” was helpful and reassuring. I loved Kanan’s latest special, but I love your earlier specials, too. I am still pulling out Kanan’s siblings and driving lessons bit in the USA in 2024 and saying there is a cow. How do you cross? And laughing at it for the 400th time. (India is still struggling to cross and progress due to Nandini still standing there lol) Kenny, I love your music teacher, harmonium, and guitar bit. I can see some comments now and more coming, which might say the conversation feels a bit awkward, but I think you both are growing, and this was a more vulnerable and original conversation than just a book promotion-on-screen talk. I also think you are finding a healthy balance with social validation where you don’t want to define yourself based on social validation (ideal therapy version). Still, you are also in the field where it's a big part of your everyday life. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but I feel I have gone through the Extrovert to Introvert shift, and I sense that with you, too. Kenny, I strongly agree that people who need to go to therapy don't go to therapy and have zero introspection. Because of them, other people around them need to go to therapy 😂 you were being sensitive and politically correct. I agree everyone needs it if it's from therapy but given the current world situation. Therapy is not accessible and available to everyone either due to a lack of professionals or due to financial constraints in this time less to no introspective people are the ones who should get therapy as compared to people who have a moral compass to question their actions 😅 but unfortunately that's not the reality. Upshot- Thank you for posting the video! Kanan thank you for inspiring everyone to write I journal a lot and usually get many ideas, and thoughts I can write about but never actually get to the writing stage due to lack of confidence and discipline and sometimes to due to as you described “hay hay thoughts are not coming to me” whining/entitlement so this was a good reminder to get over that. Lots of love to both of you and hope to be part of the passive companion through life in coming years ❤️

After watching all of Kanan and Kenny content that has appeared on the inter webs through the last decade and more, I can confidently say, this one has to be the most relatable, enriching and wholesome conversation between two lovely friends, I seem to have found my own soul alignment with over the years. Really, you guys have been like comfort food to me and my friends. Always felt like I've known you all and we've hung out in alternate dimensions. Kanan you have established yourself dude. As so many things but at the core of it all, I always sensed a sort of cynically profound and witty writer that tuned into my being humorously. All thru, there have been some gems of improvised writing and performing in you and your crews work that's been inside jokes for my good kinspeepul. Thank you for sharing your observations with us all in the manner you articulate so well. Is this it was bomb as well, one of the best sets I've ever witnessed, and I don't say that lightly. There is a cornflower blue Maruti Omni and IMA Dehradun somewhere is our common narrative butts that's for another chapter. Kenny, keep being simple, love your long winded talks programme cultural events. ❣️ #Doordarshandoornahin

When I first read about Omelas' child (where everyone in the city is happy, but the happiness is derived from torture of a child in basement), I found it to be having no parallels to real life. But after hearing Kanan's views on how he thinks an artist's life is wasted if they produces great art at the expense of their happiness; suddenly I'm sitting here thinking if I want artists, including Kanan, to be more miserable so that they produce better art or should they be happy, but that results in lower quality art for us to consume.

As someone who is just stepping into work life after engineering, a lot of this was feeling unrelatable and too esoteric in the beginning. My priorities currently are getting a great job and making the most of the opportunities given to me. However, watching Kanan talk about how a job is a job and how discipline helped him, I felt more in touch with the conversation. By the end, a lot of it felt like listening to more adult versions of me talk. Loved it :)

The weapon has melted away and you are just left with the wound and there are so many things that we are still like bracing from so many injuries that don't exist anymore that we are you're bracing from Impact from things that may and will never happen we are wincing from injuries, that have already happened before, that are long gone. - Kanan Gill

Very nice. I think the 'suffering' was the most interesting. You guys should do a podcast on that - we all want to know how other people are dealing with suffering, what they read, what they realised, etc etc It's cool. I dunno about the book - it feels like Douglas Adams way of thinking, and though I bought the book, I haven't read it yet. Now as soon as you said 'icing', I'm off this topic entirely and searching for cakes. There should be 'food mention' trigger warning in there. Come back every decade or so, and check on each other, and throw us a video -its nice. Bye now
