I am showing how I do composting in my garden. I just don't like to throw all that goodness into garbage or brown bags. Our kitchen scraps and garden clippings can be turned successfully into wonderful soil amendments. Patience, time and a little bit of work will reward us with plenty of good soil amendments, rich in nutrients and super good for our plants.

Great suggestions! Made me laugh...about 35+ years ago I was an enthusiastic beginner at my house in Armonk, Westchester, NY. I convinced my husband to get manure from a horse farm and we layered it with fall leaves in several big plastic bags, which went into the dirt basement of our very old house. Sometime the next year we had a big flood in the basement and when he went down to check there was a foot of water and all the plastic bags bobbing happily around like toys in a bathtub. That same year we did a large hot compost pile with the manure and the earthworms that came were as big as snakes. Never saw anything like it since,mThey did their job and vanished. Your method is simple and great.

Great, simple compost systems! I also have a compost bin that came with the house that I put kitchen scraps in, and loosely layer with dried grass or shredded paper. My grandson and I just built a small bin of hardware cloth at their house, and put the scraps from their family of 5 into brown paper bags inside it, then cover with a bunch of clover and grass clippings and water -

It is totally good stuff, right? And your soil will have more wonderful humus in it, which will continue the survival of bacteria, make soil retain moisture better, support good aeration and will be a source of plant nutrients. Happy gardening!

Hello Olga. As you are filling the bags and when they are full and hidden away, do you leave the bags open for rain to go in? Also, how big are the holes you are making in your bags? Thank you so much. I am storing my weeds etc in a big bucket in my garage until I get this set up ❤️
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do leave the bags open. The holes don’t have to be of any size, water will escape even through smallest openings. I just poke an inch size cuts…

Thank you Olga! Does it matter if garden waste has any damage such as different fungus on leaves from heavy rains etc ?
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it matters as long as you let your compost get fully aged. Same with seeds. Some people worry that those will sprout. No, if you let everything get really aged. Beware of horse manure though, whatever those animals eat, that’s what you will get.
