Ronnie was the heart and soul of the band. Everybody was great, but it was his band. On stage he didn't run and jump around, but he just had a presence you could feel. I was lucky enough to see them twice in 1976, unbelievable shows. The first time I hardly knew who they were and I was a fan for life after they played the very first song, 'Workin' For MCA'. It's great being able to see all those live videos out here, but you had to be there to truly appreciate how good they were live. A big group of us had tickets to see them at Cobo Hall on October 31st, 1977, and they had the plane crash 10 days before that. The show was originally scheduled for June and had to be rescheduled because of a car crash, so we had been waiting for months. What a horrible tragedy, but their music is still making millions happy.

You're right, Gary Rossington's solo is the crown jewel of the song, but what makes the song the classic that it is are the lyrics and Ronnie's vocals. You southern boys love your mamas to the nth degree. A character trait that I deeply admire and respect. And if you can't get a great song from that, then you're probably a Yankee. Glad you loved the tune, gentlemen. I'd love to hear your thoughts on "I Need You".

Gimme Three Steps is based on a true event. When Ronnie Van Zant was 18 he used a fake ID to get into The Little Brown Jug, danced with a girl named Linda, till her boyfriend came in. Ronnie ran to truck where his brother was waiting, along with another bandmate. They wrote the song that night in about 20 mins. As related by Linda Van Zant. Great song!

I thought I caught a little emotion building in Andy's face there but couldn't be sure. Thanks for confirming. Genuine responses like those are always a good thing on channels like these. Speaks a thousand words. I would also caution Alex against micro analyzing some of these classics for musicianship flaws indiscernible to the casual listener. Whatever flaw you think you're hearing is part of an overall composition of sound and emotion that has made these songs so timeless. Sometimes imperfection is perfection. These songs are classics because they spoke/speak to the soul, not because they necessarily adhered to strict musical tenets. Overall great reaction as usual guys!! 🤟

When I moved from home in 1988 just before I turned 20, this song came on about 20 minutes after I started driving. I was crying and damn near turned around to go back and hug my parents. Still a favorite to this day. If you want a fun song that a lot of people seem to miss, I missed it for decades - have no idea how managed it, check out Mississippi Kid (studio version) by Skynyrd. My hand to god if you don't feel like a bass ass with a shit eating Southern grin on your face - I don't know what will. It's a "simple" blues song that's fun to sing. Happy New Years gents! Love from Kansas City.

You boys nailed it, well done. The story of the is producer didn’t want the song as they were starting production. Ronnie Van Zant walked him out of the building and put him in his car and said we will call you when it’s done. Nobody messed with Ronnie, he knew what he wanted and did it his way.

A few years back, another band member of mine had a son and he had reached High School age and they did some sort of local band Workshop where they got all these kids together in the summer for a couple weeks or so and taught them as much as they could gave them rudimentary equipment to play on and check out different roles in the band that they might be interested in and then they broke off into groups and formed their own bands and they had to come up with I think it was three songs to play, one original and two covers. And his son last on to the song and it's funny because his dad, doesn't even like Lynyrd skynyrd. But it was this song that got to him and then when they learned it and played it, all three of them were so into it and it became one of his son's favorite songs. So this stuff is still Reaching Across generations.

If i had to chose, this would prolly be my favourite song of all time. Just bc of the words and when it found me. I always say this song is like a parent to me. Always hear it before any big milestone in my life - new years, auditions, interviews. 👌🏻🤘🏻

This is my fave Skynyrd song, glad you’re reacting to this one. I’ll echo the poster who suggested .38 Special, also Molly Hatchet. I think Bob Seger is another artist you should check out.

This song is so special to me. I have sung this song to my son his whole life (he’s 13). We recently found out that he was autistic and has asked me many times if someone can love him for being autistic. So now when I sing “you’ll find love” and “follow your heart and nothing else”, I have to choke back my tears. Such a beautiful song.

Truth: in 74 Joe Walsh played in Lake Charles Louisiana with some southern band we hadn’t heard of. Some band with a goofy name. We went to see JW and the back up band was Lynyrd Skynyrd. When they played Free Bird every one went nuts. I’ve been an unabashed fan ever since. After the show and on my way to our ride, I saw Ronnie Van Zant sitting on the steps of a Winnebago RV. I said “great show man”, he replied; “thanks man”. Three years later talented young man was gone fore ever. Keep your modern country music, give me classic southern rock.

Literally a 3-chord song. Even I can play it with the arpeggio then the strumming, and I have little talent. It's the lyrics, and they're clear and the point. They're spiritual, actually. Don't complicate your mind with "nuance." Don't be intellectual when the bullet heads for the bone. Live honestly. It's a cry for simplicity, sincerity, and honesty that, when all is said and done, will serve you better than smarts (to be "satisfied", aka "peace of mind").
