Another look behind the scenes of a Simple Minds tour in Europe.
Once upon a time tour. Lots of cuts from the wonderful crew we had.

Just hearing that evocative, melodic piano reminds me what has been missing from SM for all these years. Reminiscent of some of the brilliant quiet parts on Live in the City of Light, my favourite SM album and one of the greatest live albums of all time. It's much more than Once Upon a Time live. Scary how time goes by. A lovely tribute to some of the unsung heroes, Thanks for sharing it

I don't know if it's such a simple decision. My guess is that Jim is insufferable (What do they call it, lead singer's disease?) and also doesn't fully appreciate how important Mick was to the band. Asking Mick to grit his teeth through that for an album and/or a tour probably isn't reasonable. From what I can tell, he's happier now than when he was in the band. Sure, he might someday decide to suffer through the indignity of being minimized and nickle-and-dimed by Jim for the sake of fans and giving this story a (somewhat) happy ending, but I don't think any of us would really want him to do it if it made him miserable.

Life doesn't work like that, I'm afraid. You're of the opinion Mick has to just click his fingers and Jim jumps up and down with glee and simply fires the current keyboard player.

@@timo-ma in my opinion Mick is the biggest loss in history of Simple Minds. His sounds and ideas were absolutely brilliant. He was part of the best songs.

I remember Mick from when he was the keyboard player in a pub & club band called Diversion. His brother Donnie was the drummer, he played a silver double Premier set. Excellent drummer. I was their roadie for a while, at 18yrs of age it was great fun. Mick's talent was obvious to anybody who knew anything about music, or had tried to learn an instrument. He made it look effortless, and he was also a great guy, and it was plain to see that he was only killing time before moving on to something bigger and meaningful. Even at 18yrs of age, I could see that. It's to his great credit that he is obviously the same down to earth, sociable, approachable guy, especially as he has had such a huge global success as an artist, and an artist he is, and has been from when he was a kid. Mick will be gloriously happy that no footage of his days in Diversion exist, and I would be absolutely shocked if he remembers me, but I had great fun learning how to set up all the gear on stage. I always wondered if Donnie continued in the music business. Very talented too. Must run in the family.

Mick, your writing, your keys are a vital part of the DNA of that band. When Derek went, it was jarring but we had you. When you left, honestly, the band lost their right arm songwriting wise and never recovered. The last Simple Minds album for me was SFY. I cant listen to anything beyond that album, its like the songwriting quality control is at 35% tops beyond SFY.

After reading Derek's recent book and Theme for Great Cities ..it's great to be able to put a face to all the characters of the "behind the scenes guys " that are mentioned in the books . Fantastic to see and many thanks for taking time to do all the editing and release on here . Like most of the die hards ...you must get sick of hearing it ....but please do at least a one off gig if previous politics can be overcome. Yourself ,Derek , Jim , Charlie and either Brian or Mel ... Those early albums deserve to be heard with the musicians who created them to do them full justice live.

Wow, i`ve watched all your vids over the last hour or so. So good to see the crew getting some much deserved recognition. And i love the keyboard music to go with it. You here it in the songs, but so nice to hear it individually to truly hear the complexity of it. I hope you post up a lot more Mick?. Oh, and one other thing, Thanks for the music all those years ago, such a great part of my earlier years.

Retrospectively, "come a long way" might be my fav cut of "once upon a time". I played it as a DJ in the 2000s in some late-night radio shows. I always imagine people driving in the middle of the night listening to the radio. It s a perfect tune for it. I love this rendition. you can take a tune and change the feel of a song several times. Without destroying the original intent. Also, Thanks for all these footages. It s very generous of you !! That s the way i like to remember Simple Minds

Went see the Minds in Manchester last week (went for del amitri actually ). Both were great but I was at two gigs on the 89 tour with Mick and Mel with Jim and Charlie and they were stunning. Saw them on 91 tour without Mick and some of the atmosphere in the sound had gone(still great though). Now know Mel either( who is playing in a covers band at present bizarrely ) . Minds not as good without these two fantastic members. I realize now that the fantastic atmosphere in the bands sound was brought by Micks playing. Watching the band now is like watching the Who without Entwistle. Mel is an awesome drummer , one of my 3 faves along with Kenney Jones and Terry Williams

Freakin' Mick, you silly silly, having Robin wondering if John had crutches for show as a big "hypochondriac". Who knew there was a character behind the serious eyes of the most glorious board man in all of music? I'm so glad you're chronicling this period as it was criminally underdocumented. Yeah, we had Rotterdam but wouldn't the entire show make for a crackin' Blu Ray? Hint hint. I saw both shows in the SF Bay Area after watching my favorite band slingshot out the clubs and into arenas in the blink of an eye. I love that you stand by Once Upon A Time as "the record we wanted" because it's such a banger. Would love to learn more about how it was made, where those amazing melodies were brewing. The piano accompaniment that is the bridge to Come A Long Way is one of those things that just come round every so often. As good as those early albums are, you planted your music right in the middle of those great records that defined the 80's. How many bands have a song that, when played in a supermarket is instantly recognizable? Let alone, a couple handfuls of em? You've all so much to be proud of and you took that music round the world and what an event that was. Thank you so much for inviting us into your space while you were coming to see us all and play those unforgettable songs. I'm so bloody proud to call Simple Minds "my band" and sharing why to anyone who will listen. RIP John "Big Jah" and Johnny, what a smile Mr. Ramsey had, must've been the times of yer lives. "Cannae" get enough!
