Looks great so far you guys! You might want to think about putting up some kind of fence to keep the deer and other wild life from eating it while your sleeping. Chicken poo is great for nitrogen just let it sit a bit before using it, it can burn your plants. I hope this helps. Love qhat you two are doing keep it up and best of luck.

I do hope you get a fence up and soon. Between the deer and the rabbits and the other critters in the neighborhood your hard work is going to disappear. You can get a solar powered strand to top off the fence with electrical wire as an added deer deterrent.

I live close to him and deer and rabbits rarely touch gardens. Maybe if you lived in a city with no plants or vegetation they would. But never had a problem up North. Not even a nibble. Livestock is different story though.

Hello from Western Montana. I don’t know about you but if I don’t fence everything in my yard the deer will eat it. Really nice variety in the garden, best way to learn what works well in your climate.

Sorry you lost a chicky ❤️ Just throwing out a suggestion, we are off grid too and live on the edge of the woods and a feild. We fenced off about an acre, some feild and some woods, as a yard area. Our chicks and guineas stay in our yard and it's like free range, but not fully free. Our kids run around out there making tons of noise, and the dogs bark at everything so we haven't had any problems with predators coming close so far and the chickens (and kids) have enough space to roam around all day safely. Maybe you could do something like that for your birds!

Till your ash and other organic things like old leaves into your garden to enrich it. You can also grow potatoes in buckets. Make sure you put some drainage holes in the bottom of the buckets and a 1 inch layer of gravel for drainage. Should you start a compost pile, good idea is place it near your chicken coop. Those chickens will turn it over for you.

A rooster will help keep predators away. The only problem is you'll hear a rooster from 4am to 9pm. But if you're trying to keep eggs to raise more chickens, you'll need a rooster. Adding a few turkeys to the flock will also add protection. Keeping skeeter out while they free roam will also help keep predators away.

I'd argue that after a while you don't actually "hear" the rooster. It becomes second nature lol.

@@elizabethsessions4486 my neighbor got one 2 years ago.... I still hear it. Everyday. As soon as I get home in the morning from work, all day long thru the windows (just got brand new windows), and before I leave for work at night. I don't mind it since I was raised on a farm around them. But the other neighbors not so much

You can sprinkle some of that ash in your garden as well. If the raised deer bait stations get hit you’ll need at a minimum a couple levels of hot wire. I believe they sell 12 volt systems that are powered by solar. Looking good! Lots of hard work involved in gardening. Excited for the next structure you build.

Looking good If you're going to free range your chickens. You NEED a rooster, mature rooster with a healthy set of spurs. They will fight pretty much anything that threatens their hens. TEST YOUR SOIL Ph before you plant. You could have issues with acidic soil resulting from all the pine trees. I strongly recommend doing it before you get a bunch of time and money invested.

Drill some holes in the bottom of the pepper buckets. Lost some due to drainage a few years back. Even a regular water followed by a crazy downpour can drown the plants.

Not sure if you already did, but make sure each planter and bucket etc. has holes in the bottom to avoid waterlogging your plants. And (again, I'm aware of your water situation), be aware that container gardens (esp. pots) need more water because the roots can't get it from the ground. So that'll put some more strain on your rainwatercatchment facilities. Good luck and wishing you a nice harvest on your first "grown up" garden! 🙂

You should make another bed away from the others for lambsquarter! It tastes better than spinach or lettuce and is more nutritious than most other green vegetables! It can be eaten raw or cooked and once it started it reseed itself every year! You just have to till it up to loosen the soil!

We live on property in WA. State. We have chickens, a big garden too. We lost chickens to coyotes when they free ranged. They stay in the woods and watch and grab them when they are close to them. We saw the coyote on our trail cam. So we put up another fenced in area so they can pretty much free range. It's quite a big area and they are safe. Haven't lost any more birds so for us way too many predators where we live. We also had to fence our garden area, cuz the deer and rabbits were munching like crazy. They even ate our flowers and other veggies off our deck, so fenced in a backyard area to keep them safe. So just know even with all the other greens in the forest they will come munch your garden if it's not fenced. We even had to dbl. Fence in some areas, cuz rabbits were getting under, so put logs all around the perimeter. Just so you guys know cuz it's so disheartening to come out and check on the garden and it's getting eaten by wildlife

Maybe you can build one of those large cages that people use to let the chickens get out and graze, but are still protected from predators. Just a big frame made out of lumber wrapped with chicken wire (the bottom doesn't have wire across it so they can eat, etc). Move it every hour or two so they can get at new stuff.

Looks like this episode has sparked a ton of feedback and advice soooo, I guess I’ll just throw in a bit more, lol. If you’re thinking you might expand your livestock holdings at all, maybe more chickens or what have you, an LGD (livestock guardian dog) is extremely helpful to have around. The Anatolian Shepherd (or Kangal) is a fantastic choice for chicken & duck guard duty.

You guys did a very nice job on the garden. Great idea of separating the herbs and having them readily available in the deck pots. Looking forward to seeing everything grow and watching you harvest in a few months. You might want to put up electric netting (fence) to protect everything. I believe there's a system that uses a small solar charger that would work perfect in that sunny spot.

Did you mention there is logging going on nearby? Woodchips and sawdust make a good ground cover to keep moisture in and prevent weeds. If they have anything like that available, take advantage of it.

Yes wood chips enrich your soil, just cover it with straw, grass clipping, leaves, all enrich your soil and help with weed control. Next fall gather up the leaves and cover your garden with as many leaves as you can. They break down and will give you amazing garden soil.

Inconveniently perhaps, but like all the other comments, you are definitely gonna need some electrified fencing so that your garden is for you and not for the wildlife. Also, big enuf to allow the chickens to roam inside of it. I once lived out in the open in a desert area of Southern California, and planted corn and gladiolas. The rabbits ate them CLEAN to the ground and then ate the BULBS which were UNDER the ground. Clean as a whistle. Once the deer and/or rabbits find your gardens, .... they will say "thank you for the breakfast"!

Put that ash on your garden! Such a good organic way to get some good stuff in the soil. Believe me, it makes a huge difference, even if just sprinkled around your plants. But look up what likes it and what doesn't if you are doing it that way, if you don't care, just mix it in. But you already have your stuff in so just sprinkle away! lol.

Nice job! The garden looks great! The deer, raccoons, chipmunks, are gonna LOVE your veggies! A 5’ simple wire fence should work for the deer-they don’t like jumping into narrow enclosed spaces, so 4-5’ should work, even though they are capable of jumping 6’. Chicken wire around the bottom & bent out to make an apron a couple of feet out should stop the diggers. Sorry to hear about losing a chicken…hazards of living with wildlife. Spring & fall, before & after planting, let the chickens in the garden for fun & cleanup.

Not sure if you have one but a good rooster in with your hens will try to protect his ladies. They will make a bunch of noise when something is around. National hatched hens will set and hatch off chicks as well. Just an idea to keep lot of chickens around your place
