OMG!! After hours of research on this subject, your statement hit me like a ton of bricks ... your dog doesn't need a balanced meal at every meal ... so simple yet so true. Thank you.

I have been reading up on dog nutrition for 25 years and reading a lot of anecdotal info about long lived dogs. And, what I have concluded is the most long lived dogs get great variety in a meat based diet and their owners did not obsess about balance in every bite. There is a bell curve in which dogs at the low end of nutrition suffer ailments but also the dogs at the highest end of nutrition also do worse, long term, than the ones more in the middle. It is big corporate kibble makers who have promoted the propaganda that dogs must be fed "balance" in every meal and only they have the knowledge to nourish your dog with their chemical, carb loaded, shelf stable garbage.

In Australia some butchers make "pet mince" which is leftover meat they have not sold and minced up. Very cheap. I brown off the excess fat and mix it with cooked rice and cooked frozen mixed vegetables. Dogs love it and its cheap. Dogs in beautiful condition and vet said same. Vet said dogs need vegetables as well as meat. As the meat is not exactly "fresh" it will go off quickly so I freeze after cooling and take it out the night before.

I make homemade food for my dog about every three days. I start with casserole dish, add a cup of rice and. Cup and a half of water, add two good size chicken breasts or ground turkey and sprinkle in the diced vegetables. Cook it at 350 for 1 hour 30 minutes. It comes out great every time. I use frozen meat so you could reduce the cooking time. I add a fresh egg each morning over the top. He loves it. I have also heard that flax is good to add so I plan to do that. I give my dog a probiotic every day too. When we have salmon, I always share a bit with my dog.

After removing the boiling water from the burner, I would put the veggies in first and let them cook for a bit and then add the chicken because the veg should be cooked more than the chicken in my opinion. I would remove the veg and chicken from the water and while still hot mix in the egg and liver-- The goal being to not overcook the liver or that wonderful egg yolk. This is the very best dog nutrition channel.

Dog Meals: When I got my Golden Retriever she was 8 weeks old and had been fed Royal Canin by the Breeder in BKK. When she was about 6-8 months old, I stopped feeding her packaged kibble type “Dog Food”. Instead, I cook for her every day. Today she is 23 months old….. and very healthy, weighing in at 30kg….. no fat. All muscle. A typical late afternoon/early evening meal will consist of one type of meat. Every meal is different, so she does not get bored and looks forward to every meal. 1) Chicken Guts (Heart, Liver, Lungs…etc) 2) Beef Liver. 3) Chicken Breast. 4) Fish (High in Omega 3) 5) Beef. With one (1) of the above meats, I will then try to add most all of the following…… if I have it in the refrigerator. - Broccoli - Carrot - Ginger - Apple - Pineapple - Celery - Cucumber - Turmeric Root Powder - 1 Egg - 3 Spoonfuls of BROWN RICE (Never White Rice) I cook the Brown Rice and put it in small zip-lock bags and freeze it until needed. I get enough for about 2 weeks (14 meals) The meat is cooked first at high temp in a Wok with Coconut Oil. I then add the veggies, egg and pre-cooked BROWN RICE for only 2-3 minutes. If I add Turmeric Powder, I add it to the bowl uncooked, before serving. Many packaged “Dog Food” brands are responsible for causing Cancer and early deaths in many dogs…. So I feed my dog “Real Food”. Have fun cooking for your dog. They will enjoy it….: )

That is because he instinctively knows they are not good for him. Legumes have a lot of irritating proteins termed Lectins that are not good for the GI tract, especially for carnivores. Their taste buds have evolved to guide them in the selection of species appropriate foods. True, canids can survive on human, omnivore food if necessary or fodder in the wild but they are designed to eat prey at the top of the food chain. This new trend to add legumes rejected from the human food supply to dog kibble is really bad. The excess legumes change the GI flora in a way that degrades a dog's health. Species appropriate flora can only flourish in the gut of a species appropriately fed canid. The appropriate microflora makes short chain fatty acids that nourish the GI lining directly and are also absorbed to nourish other tissues. When the GI lining is denied these fatty acids it can't perform to absorb other nutrients efficiently and there is a bad, cascade effect on health. Additionally, the species appropriate microflora makes various B vitamins and probably vitamin D and K. Interestingly, wild wolves and other carnivores are vibrantly healthy when hunting is good and that is all without any vitamin supplements.

I cook for my dog now as after he picked up a bacterial infection (salmonella) I wondered just what was going in his food. He never seemed to put on weight and was very picky with his food. But now I feed him on chicken, beef and fish with either butternut squash or sweet potato and celery. He hates rice so I give him a little pasta with some fresh parsley, a sprinkling of Boswellia (with turmeric) His appetite has improved enormously and he’s put on 4 kilos! He’s now a good healthy weight.

I started cooking for my dogs in 1985, after attending a Health Fair and visiting a booth promoting healthy homemade food for dogs. I had all kinds of different rescue dogs, (anywhere from 3-7 of them at the same time). They all loved every part of the meal, the veggies, meat, sweet potatoes, egg, etc. Never had a picky eater among any of them. One of them, a bull and terrier, would never fail to thank me after every meal. Wherever I happened to be in the house or yard, he would come up and give me one small dry 'kiss' on the hand. I also avoided giving them poison injections (the v word).

I also have been doing this for a couple of years--at first I was very concerned Abt getting it perfect but I saw a comment that said that all people used to feed dogs in the "old days" was table scraps and the dogs did ok and that's how I remember it too so I just relaxed! I also cook it because of the warnings on every meat package Abt safe handling of raw meat--especially raw chicken--you'd think it was haz mat! No need to be DOGmatic Abt it imo. So great so many dogs have people with the concern (and time) to look after their dogs this way!

Hey, C Dubyuh, I too was turned off with the "raw" food diet. But when I got the nerve to try preparing and feeding it to my little Yorkie puppy and saw how much she loved it, I've never looked back. It may be a little gross for some owners but when you see how much it DOESN'T gross THEM out, how much they enjoy it, and all the health benefits it gives, you pretty much have to put your "feelings" about raw food aside and just go ahead with it! And also, as far as bacteria and the cleanliness of it all, if you handle it correctly and take all the same precautions you do when you prepare to cook raw foods for yourself (that is, if you're not a vegan/vegetarian), you'll do just fine! 🙂

Great advice. The other recipes I see on YT have powder additives, and it makes sense that doggies don't need that stuff every meal. I like how you grate the veggies, too. Because of the high cost of dog food, I've been reducing kibble (so expensive!) to bare minimum, and giving doggies raw meats on sale (or) that I often cook up with (home made) bone broth and veggies. Or, I mix some oatmeal with green beans and sweet potato to make more of a mush. I hear onions are toxic, but I was a little worried about mushroom? Is that safe?

IMO its prolly fine to leave them on, as the video says you shouldn't be giving carbs to your dog everyday anyway. Potatoes contain solanine which is concentrated in and near the skin and shoots. Too much is toxic. In any case sweet potatoes don't have solanine to worry about as they are not actual potatoes.

My dog just turned 7. I've been slowly transitioning him off of Royal Canin Low Fat veterinary diet to home cooked. I also tried this recipe As much as I want him off the Royal Canin, his bowel movements haven't been the same and he goes less during the day. He usually went 2X per day. Now it's once and they are a bit softer and narrower. I am going to get him back on the Royal Canin and add home cooked to see if his poop improves.

@garyrobinson8665 2 жыл бұрын
The dog is probably pooping less because it's better quality food and the dog is absorbing and digesting all the nutrients and goodness. It's normal. You could add a bit of rice or oats to bulk the meal up and firm the dogs stool.
@jimmie200
@jimmie200 Жыл бұрын
@@garyrobinson8665 Exactly. They don't need to poop 2x a day. Feed them meat, vegs and rice. Make sure there's organic beef liver or chicken liver in their food in small amounts. They will thrive.

I found my dogs poop less when they are on homemade foods and I can’t be more happy. Kibbles make them fat and the excessive starch just makes them pooping a lot.

I have given my dogs home cooked food for years. I also give sardines in water 2 to 3 times a week. My current dog has blueberries as a treat and unsalted rice cakes plus raw carrot and broccoli. He also has raw yellow and orange peppers banana and apple. My previous dog lived to 20. It makes me sad to see dogs fed dry biscuits day in day out. How would you like to eat dry cornflakes at every meal. What was the brand he used as a topper on his meal?

Thanks for all of the information. Considering the cooked vs. raw video where you discussed cooking causing meat to denature, why do you opt to cook it yours?
@thedognutritionist
@thedognutritionist 7 ай бұрын
Hi there, cooking meat causes proteins to denature, which changes its texture and flavor. I choose to cook meat for several reasons: it enhances safety by killing harmful bacteria, improves digestibility, and often enhances flavors through caramelization and Maillard reactions. Hope this helps!

@@thedognutritionist Thanks Cam, where did you study canine nutrigenomics? Glad for your experience - we've been dog parents for over 30 years and know we can feed iffy food for a long time before the results show up. We've been making our dog's food but she just got diagnosed with stage 3 Kidney disease and the vet has her on Hills prescription canned. I don't like what I've heard about the company and corn and pork by products come before turkey in the ingredients list. We're in search of a kidney friendly recipe. Forgive me for being cautious about the sources of our info and advice.
