My dog is tiny and I cook for him every meal fresh :) No freezing. I just enjoy doing that. He eats twice a day and it takes me less than 5-10 minutes each meal. I have a 4.5 lbs chihuahua. I cook for mine because he makes a face like “I’m gonna throw up” when I feed him raw. He’s in great health, he’s white and doesn’t have tear stains for example. I give him raw bones a couple times a week. That’s the only raw part of his diet now.

Working with a lot of light colored, poodles and poodle mixes in rescue, I also found that the tear stains disappeared once they were fed raw or at least fresh, cooked (home or reputable commercial brands, human grade ingredients). There was a probiotic on the market from Purina called "Prostora" which was a white, flavored, soft tablet, very expensive that was also said to get rid of tear stains. I did use that product with my white, mini poodle to restore his flora after he had been on antibiotics. I did notice that his tear stains diminished. However, it may be that the timing was such that I was also introducing a lot more human-grade, fresh meats, raw and cooked into his diet and slowly phasing out the kibble. Kibble is made from "feed-grade" not fit for human consumption fats and meats and very high levels of feed-grade grains (rejected from the human food supply usually because of aflatoxin contamination). All in all, a toxic laden, rancid fat mess. The feed grade, oxide and sulfite forms of iron, copper, magnesium and zinc may be the simple explanation for why kibble causes tear stains-- These forms of metals are not found in real food and as such are poorly absorbed and so can reach a steady-state, mildly toxic level at all times. They would be expected to get excreted in body fluids such as tears. Interestingly, I saw a vintage photo of a movie star with a very tear-stained poodle (it was either Natalie Wood or maybe Doris Day). Anyway, commercial dog foods were the latest, greatest thing in the early 60s.

This is all so confusing but at the same time makes sense. My lab has had constant vet visits for yeast/skin ear infections. He's 15 months old. All I get told environmental allergies. No idea if it's food allergies or anything. Medicine after medicine injections, shampoos. Thousands later now they want to change his food again 3rd time to a very expensive script food. I started with cooking his food and the vet told me to stop. I have gone back to giving him a raw chicken foot 2 times a week. It breaks my heart He's never had a puppy faze outside ripping things apart. No energy, high anxiety, constantly wanting "demand barking " at his dish to eat due to prednisone. I'm over these medications want to try other things to help with the yeast that is affordable.

Hey Julie, we can get this sorted with a simple but specific diet. It's the gut that's playing up, and the diet must be addressed if the issue is to be resolved. If you email me help@thedognutritionist.com

Hi, I had a miniature poodle female who had all kinds of allergic problems from the time I got her from a reputable breeder at age 8 weeks. I want to tell you about this in case it might relate to your pups problems and help you solve them. Like you, I found that the veterinarians were unable to help with their meds and Rx, crappy foods. Cam is correct that the gut has to be healed with species appropriate diet and then all will be well. I was able to solve all my pup's problems by mapping out her food allergies. She came to me with serious Giardia and was put on a series of meds to clear it (it seemed resistant to the first two rounds of meds). For clearing Giardia or Coccidia, it requires strong meds and diligent, immediate cleanup of poop and sanitation of the area in addition to cleaning pup's hinny so that he does not reinfect himself. My pup was on a chicken based kibble from the breeder. Don't know if it was the Giardia irritation or irritation from the medications or both that made her gut irritated and leaky and so set the stage for her severe chicken allergy. She had flaky skin, anal gland problems, ear problems etc. all due to chicken and probably other proteins igniting an allergy response. One thing I tried was to put her on a hydrolyzed, Rx canned food temporarily and then added specific proteins back as a test. The hydrolyzed food has all the protein broken down into small peptides that are too small to elicit an allergic reaction inside the GI tract or systemically as a serum IgG response from protein fragments leaking from the gut. A better approach would probably have been to get her on raw as soon a possible. Raw proteins are pure and not crosslinked by cooking so break down easier and more completely so less likely to keep irritating the gut. Once the gut is healed, it will not be so irritable. This turned out to be the case for my dog for beef and eggs but she could never have chicken. As long as I fed her primarily raw and no chicken, she lived a very healthy life with a great coat and skin and no anal gland problems. Early on, I also went to a Middle Eastern market and bought goat meat (on the bone) and would slow cook the meaty bones in water on the stove, take all the meat off and use the broth (that turned into gelatin) as an elixir for her. I picked goat as the most unique protein. As a pup, you need to balance calcium and phosphorus and add vitamins. Cam can advise you on that. The goat meat and bone broth healed her GI tract and got her back to health as I read and learned about raw food. Glad you are on this channel and being the advocate for your dog vs. just going down the Rx path of prednisone and dangerous, veterinary food.

First, get a new veterinarian, or at least take your dog to a specialty hospital. Get an appointment with the veterinary dermatologist and have them do the patch test, where they actually test for dozens of allergens with a little patch on their side. I did this with my dog and the dermatologist found everything she was allergic to including food, environmental, and contact allergies. I went from there and always read labels finally finding the few foods she could eat. Later I began cooking toppers, and adding them to her commercial foods and finally began just cooking her entire meal. I consulted with the veterinary nutritionists at the local veterinary teaching hospital to ensure she was getting adequate nutrition. From the first visit to the specialist though, she was like a new dog. Take your pooch to a specialist soon!

The vitamin D form in the mushrooms is D2 and not D3. Not sure if carnivores are efficient or even make the enzymes necessary to convert plant D to usable D3. Carnivores are designed to eat at the top of the food chain-- Prey. So, they need D3 from animal sources like liver, fatty fish, egg yolk and several other D3 rich animal products. Most people also think that carnivores can convert B-carotene to active vitamin A. On the contrary, they need to eat retinol/retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A. B-carotene is healthy for other reasons but please don't neglect feeding dogs active A and D. Note about eggshells in the USA: Commercially sold eggs are apparently treated with an anti-bacteria coating and so must be scrubbed before feeding to your dog. Or, get eggs from your local farmer's market.

I wanted to reply to the comment on eggshells lacking calcium phosphorous, but YT won't let me reply to the comment - I've been doing lots of research/reading comparing raw & home-cooked diets, and the topic of calcium is obviously an important one. Eggshells, on the whole contain, 40% calcium CARBONATE - a very potent source of calcium. Calcium is an essential supplement to add if you home cook for your dog. Boneless protein/meat in their diet has higher levels of PHOSPHORUS and therefore calcium needs to be added to balance the calcium/phosphorus levels. So the comment about eggshells lacking calcium phosphorus shouldn't cause concern to worried pet parents as the boneless meat/protein is already providing high levels of phosphorus that eggshells lack

I have a hard time getting my hands on ground pork, let alone a heart from an animal. Chix gizzards and hearts and chicken livers is about the best. Maybe the more hispanic stores may have a couple more items, but if Its too "weird" you wont find it. It seems if people will get too grossed out shopping they dont carry it. For instance, I heard America is the one country that eats the least amount of goat. That it is very " normal" around the rest of the world. Not sure if that is true or not, but You most certainly wont find it in a restaurant or grocery store.

Most likely just a recipe for the people who aren’t keen on raw, but still want to feed natural food

Cooking does denature enzymes, the fact is though that this does not affect the dogs ability to digest or cause any type of deficiency. Dogs bodies create their own enzymes

My dog can’t eat boiled chicken he has allergic to chicken. He vomited chicken
Dogs in the wild forage so they will eat varied foods available to them

Exactly. They don’t just eat meat. They eat raw meat tho. My dogs eat raw. Dogs need some fat for their coats. Just imagine a dog eating another animal, plus the contents of its stomach.

If your dog has sensitive gut, maybe don't feed too much organs at one go. It can be too rich

The only problem that bothers me is a place to wash your hands Between handling the meat and then the veggies that are cut up on the same bloody cutting board And then touching the Tupperware and stuff after that… It just kind of grosses me out lol

…it’s cooked

So cut the veggies first, then the meat. No need to wash the board in that order.. 😒

Don't skip the egg shells it's literally the only source of calcium in the recipe. Unless you want a calcium deficiency

Way too confusing? You dont state amounts what oil how long to cook? I would rather buy dog food!!! There is no list if ingredients. Seeds are very dangerous you dont stipulate that they should be totally blended. Where is the fruits???

Seeds aren't dangerous

Everything you said is absolute nonsense except that you prefer to buy commercial crap. Of course you do, you're too ignorant to know any better and too stupid to learn
