Have you used a flange binding on your quilt project? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnvChaeom9qSg80

Makes so much sense as they say to sew around the edge first anyway

Interesting tip. However, I LIKE my binding to be thick, or fuller than the quilt even, and I like my binding to show about 3/8" instead of the 1/4 ". It's fun to see the different binding on thing though. It's a good tip to have in the tool kit -- incase it's needed.

I was just thinking about that today. The group of quilters who leave extra batting for a very full binding. It is nice to have different options available so that we can choose the best for each project. Thanks for watching!

Hi Robin, I use a similar technique solely now however combine 2 rounds in 1 by attaching my binding with a serger (increase left needle tension!), my 2.25” binding always well passes my stitches when folded over and is flat when doing so. However for those without sergers this zigzag idea is great!
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
Very nice. Happy to hear that it’s helpful. No serger here, yet, but I do like the idea of getting It done in one pass.

What a good tip! I have never seen that before. I will use the extra thread to save my hands from the tugging to get the binding sewn down.😊
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
Yes! It does take a little extra time but if It helps lower the frustration level when hand sewing I say it’s worth It.

I’ve used It in clothing too but mainly to keep the seam from fraying and for extra support.

Great tip. I have never used a single fold binding. I think I will give that a try. Also, thank you for sharing your videos.

You are so welcome! Thank you for hanging out with me each week. I love single fold binding. It’s all I use on wall hangings or smaller projects.

How timely for me. I just wrestled with that exact problem. It seemed like I had enough binding to bring around to the front and stitch down but that darn sew line was so close. Now I can use the technique you just showed on my next table runner or any small project. Thank you Robin!

I do have a serger and have used it on larger projects but I usually don’t bother to pull it out for smaller projects. I’ve never thought about using a zig zag stitch! I’m definitely going to give this a try!!!
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
It’s one of tips that’s worth trying at least once to see if It works for you and if you like It. A serger would be nice but I’m guessing It can be one more step in the process that maybe you don’t always want to do. Especially if there’s an easy way to do It without pulling out the serger.

Serging seems quicker. I don’t have a serger yet but I have been looking in the thrift stores and local Facebook groups.

@@rsislandcrafts If I upgrade mine, I'll just send you this one. My niece messed me up and I took her shopping for her new serger because she kept "borrowing" mine. She got a job so I made her buy her own. Of course she got a self threader and self pressure adjuster. The jealousy is killin me 😅
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
@@jodieroundtree488 I’d be jealous too. You need the fancy easy bits with all the clothes etc you make. I just want to serge around pillows, quilts, and the occasional Jammie pants.

I use a 2 1/4" binding double fold and hand stitch it down. I find that my binding is way wider on the back then on the front. I think I need to move my needle to the left two or three threads to help that.
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
I always struggled with that when I made quilts too.

Thanks for the great tip. I usually use 2 1/4 inch binding. But sometimes I use the single fold method. Not sure of that width.
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
You are so welcome! I use 1.5” with single fold. Years ago I tried to get down to 2.25” and I always struggled getting It over the line. I might try It again on my next quilt.

Thank you Robin This is a very Good Tip !! I wonder if I could just use the overcast foot and stitch to put on my binding, I haven't really ever used it before, but I believe it puts down a strait stitch and over casts at the same time. I don't create mini or small quilts, but I am going to test this and see how it does. Sincerely Your friend Lynne
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
Someone mentioned that they are their binding on using their serger. If you’re getting a straight line and the overcast then I think it’s worth a try. Maybe start with a potholder to see how It does.

I find the more binding I make the narrower I’m able to go if that’s what works for my quilt. Have you seen the “new” trend of using 3” binding? Now they’re saying wider is better. It always makes me smile. 3” was popular when I started quilting around 20 years ago. Everything really does come back around again. 😉

Hey Robin. Did you know there's a hum in your video?
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
I’m Sorry. It’s the ac unit which is directly outside my window. I have no control over It. It seems to be more noticeable when wearing headphones. Unfortunately It runs a lot and for quite awhile right now with the temperatures over 105. At my old house in Florida It was the traffic and large trucks driving by. Here it’s the ac unit and the jets flying overhead. 🤷♀️.

Oh Robin I use my serger and it works great. This would also work as well. Your poor hands look so dry, are you ok?
@rsislandcrafts3 ай бұрын
A serger would be very helpful. Sorry about my scary looking hands. I have very sensitive skin and I had to wash my hands at a doctor’s office and I had a very bad reaction to the hand soap. Unfortunately It takes quite awhile to heal because it’s hard to keep my hands dry all day between hand washing and dishes. I can’t wear latex gloves for dishes due to a latex allergy. Lotion makes It worse until it’s mostly healed. Thanks for checking on me.
