Thank you, im so sick of people acting like you need thousands of dollars and a PHD to start a reef tank. Sold an established 10 gallon over the weekend and the guy (who is brand new to reef keeping mind you) came over and wanted to insult my main setup for not having a protein skimmer or a $1k+ light and i cringed so hard the entire time cause you could tell he learned this all recently and had zero experience. I was just like huh wonder why its been doing so good all these years then?

There’s a lot of truth in what you say. One of the things I really appreciate about this channel is how it shows what can be achieved without all of the complexity and cost. KISS. I have been a bit of a “black sheep” running my 3 foot and separate 75L reef aquariums on a simple canister filter and T5 lights… no skimmer. There were some limitations on what I could keep but the clowns were breeding and the morphs becoming plague like, so it worked. I’ve since upgraded to Hydra lights and probably the most important change I’ve made has been maintaining stability via an ATO and RODI (the LFS sells this for $5/25L). That slow bleed of heavy metals and other “unknowns” using dechlorinated tap water is quite real in my experience over the long term, so RODI would be mandatory for anything beyond fish and basics like morphs.

What started as my 10 gallon QT tank turned into a 2nd tank when my twin clownfish didn’t get along. It has 2 rocks, 2 pvc pipes and a HOB filter with a sponge and some little biosphere like things it came with. It’s been the easiest tank I’ve ever had! Thinking of finally adding a light to it (it was by the window before) and maybe a softy or two

@@SimpleAquariumsLauren Good presentation. Unfortunately like every aquarist? The most critical aspect is lost on 99% of those wishing to keep/maintain an aquatic environment is their complete ignorance that unlike all other pet keepers, the aquatic caper is 100% reliant on the aquarist's ability to maintain EVERY aspect of this environment. 99.9% of all aquatic animals and plants will die after a very brief time. They all do. It's a tragic hobby. Unlike rabbits, cats, dogs, birds, reptiles etc, an aquarist has to artificially maintain the oxygen/CO2 and waste environment survival using very complex methods. Keeping a cat, dog, rabbit, rat, mouse or reptile is so much easier because their actual "environment" is 99% already catered for by the same process as the owner's requirements. It's basically called air as we know it. Aquatic care is extremely complex in comparison as this task is now totally reliant on artificial technology and almost no aquarist has any idea how to do this. 99/9% of home aquarium keepers absolutely guaranteed of death and mayhem within a few months at best. The entire domestic aquatic hobby should be banned as it is extremely cruel. I absolutely hope that this practice will be banned in the not too distant future.

I think it's important to note that clownfish do not host anything. Anemones and corals host fish, shrimp, crabs, etc. Clownfish reside in anemones.

Thanks for the info....I came across your video series on KZbin by accident and was fascinated. Last marine tank I saw was in KKarratha and had been built into the house.It was very impressive and bloody expensive!! I checked and Kmart Armadale has a 20l tank in stock so I am off. It'll take me a while to get up to speed (Watching your videos mostly!) but I'm in and looking forward to an adjunct to my aquaponics system. Thanks again Mal

Ive actually just bought two of the anko 20l tanks as my first introduction into saltwater. I have kept freshwater tanks for 5+ years now and have always wanted a reef tank. So i bought two of the tanks and am using one as a sump (trying to increase what little water volume there is in there). But i must say, i probably went a tiny bit overboard with what i thought i needed. But overall im loving the experience so far. Cant wait to add one little goby in the distant future

There are only 8 world wide, and none in Australia so you can get it from their website. At least I assume that is how she got them. Correction: There is a difference it seems. There is Kmart which we know of here is the US and then there is Kmart Australia which has a slightly different logo (and is the one she has in the thumbnail) which still has over 300 stores across Australia and New Zealand.

Great video! I love anemone-fish, I used to keep them with a sponge filter years ago, they are really hardy as long as you don't overstock and keep an eye on the water, I used to collect my own water in black drums back in the day and one time I had it sitting there for 6 months before I used it and found small waratah anemone's in it on the sides, I couldn't believe they were not only alive but they must of grown in there because I didn't see them in the water when I collected it, It's pretty cool these days you can get a little setup like this with even a power head included, the little setup looks nice, your daughter will love it 🙂

Hi. New subscriber here from Adelaide. Love this little tank. Got a similar one for my daughter at Petbarn for Christmas to out in her room too. Cycling at the moment, hoping to put in a very small yabby. Hope this will work out! Yours looks great, never would have thought doing a salt set up though in such a small tank. Hope you have success too! Kerry
@wormworm580
@wormworm580 Жыл бұрын
Hello, just thought I’d recommend the native feeder shrimp (macrobrachium sp.) because they grow to be medium yabby sized and are pretty interesting and have big long front claws that are still pretty narrow and weak so it might be a bit easier to handle and clean the tank (especially for a kid that might get their little fingers a bit close). You could keep a small group of them in a tank this size unlike yabbies. They also aren’t escape artists like yabbies are. Just thought I’d recommend them since they’re so cheap and fun, and probably better suited to a small tank like this one (yabbies will want a bigger hiding spot which will take up most of a tank this size). Also, their claws are smaller so if you ever wanted to get a few nano fish too or cherry shrimp or something they could live with the big arm shrimp pretty safely. You can find them at pet stores as “feeder shrimp” or go scooping with a net at your local creek. Best of luck with the new tank!

Love the bare bottom idea in a nano... This is going to make it really easy to clean... Maybe a few turbo snails to help with the algae on the bottom might be good ☺️ maybe you can do a small rock of pink zoas later on to match too 😬

I've been researching small saltwater setups for a couple weeks and this is by far the most accessible one I've seen. Very simple and now I actually feel like I can do it 😭 it's been so confusing trying to figure out what's necessary vs nice to have. Question: do you know of any anemones that would do well in this tank, with similar or some budget lighting?
@ryanb.8393
@ryanb.8393 Жыл бұрын
Anemones need quite a lot of light, I can't recommend any that would do well with the kind of light featured in the video. I also wouldn't recommend any budget lamp not meant for aquariums. The one showcased in the video claims to only reach 38 PAR, and the lowest level of PAR I'd ever recommend is 50 for a few bottom dwelling soft corals. Do yourself a favor and buy a real light in order to keep your coral alive and to watch them grow. The A80 Tuna Blue Nano Light is a great light for nano tanks.

Technically speaking, yes. They are two separate companies though. Kmart was an American company which has expanded world wide (and has since collapsed to the point that there are now only 8 stores left and only 3 of them are in the US). Kmart Australia is a spin off of Kmart when they went to expand into Australia and started a separate entity with an Australian partner and that company still has over 300 locations across Australia and New Zealand.

The tech bug is dangerous in reefing, blows costs out too much. Yes you can do it, but you can do it basic and cheap and successfully with some proper maintenance. The tech is there to make it easier, but it’s not necessary.
