SIMPLE SHAKER BED

It was high time we made a bed for our new house. This one started with riving out green posts from chestnut oak. These were planed down, then mortised before being turned on our treadle lathe.
The rails stiles and headboard of the bed are quarter sawn red oak we milled last year. The bed is finished with a simple mix of raw linseed oil cut 50/50 with citrus solvent.

I still try to, hand saws, chisels and hand planes. I get laughed at sometimes and get asked," whos tools are those your great, great grandfathers"??? I laugh because their fit of joinery isn't as nice.

Only the wealthy can afford hand craftsmanship. That twin bed would cost over a thousand $US. People on minimum wage can only afford charity furniture. We live in a Chinese plastic injection world.

In our modern time where allmost every thing is made by machines producing the same and soul less item over and over agein, so have people started to notice the old ways of handcrafts. And more people are starting to see the joy behind those crafts eatch day. The only sad thing is that people need to change their expectancy that handmade things should be priced the same as somthing made by a machine. There is an reason why that hand forged and hand sharpened knife cost 120$ instead of the 30$ the factory knife costs. And that is that it takes a lot longer and is alot more difficult to make handmade things.

Any work with just hand tools is incredibly meditative and relaxing. It seems that power tools bring stress. I'm not banishing them forever but if there is time, then working with only hand tools seems to be more rewarding and fulfilling.

There's something so special about planing green oak. Has to do with the fiber bundling I think, but I love it when I take a shaving off and there's those gaps in it from where the cross fibers were. That bed is gorgeous btw. With wood like that you don't need a stain.
