A lot of us struggle with how to solo when the tempo is going really fast.
If you can't play 8th or 16th notes then we struggle to come up with ideas that get our solos sounding gravy and in the pocket.
Try this technique to create meaningful solos at fast tempos:
1. Play 1/4 notes
2. That's 4 notes per bar
3. 1 note per beat of rhythm
4. Then double each note
5. So play each note twice
This is a very simple technique but practice over a fast chorus of your favourite tune and start to feel how you can float over the top of the crazy fast tempo.
This will sound 100000 x better than struggling with 1/8th or 1/6th notes and playing a fumbled solo
Try it out and have fun!
It’s all about learning and absorbing these small tasty bite size ideas into your playing. Before you know it you’ve got a ton of great stuff at your fingertips!
Swing Out!
Robin

I love your videos. Thank you. But there is a very very tiny thing I sometimes wish for. If you are playing alone I sometimes wish you had loop station or a playback you recorded before, so that you can play on top of some nice chords. But maybe imagination is not good enough. As I said it's just a very tiny wish. Nothing super important. Your videos are brilliant as they are.

+Marco Trosi hi Marco - Yes that is a good idea but not always practical when filming - but I would like to experiment with a loop station - do you use one? cheers - Robin

+Gypsy Jazz Secrets I don't have a looper. But I did a quick research and my favorite loopers so far are the TC Electronic Ditto X4 (made for guitarists) and the TC Electronic Mic Looper (in case you prefer using a mic). I am not a big fan of BOSS but a lot of people seem to be happy with the Boss RC-3. The are many more loop stations but some of them had too many buttons and knobs. I'd prefer it simple.

+Gypsy Jazz Secrets Hey Robin, you said you played with Dunlop 2mm so I'm guessing you meant the purple Delrin 500 series. But have you tried the Primetone 3mm Large Jazz with the grip? I just got some and they're made for gypsy jazz and get that super bright tone you like. I think you would dig them. They're easier to hold onto as well.

Gypsy Jazz Secrets Yeah, there's a 3mm and a big fat 5mm. They are really durable and are pretty much made for gypsy jazz. The 3mm also feels more like a 2mm because of the way the grip dimples inwards. As soon as I played with it, I thought of you haha
