Thank you so much for your videos! I've decided this is the year to work on vibrato and this video helps more than you know. I always thought a fast vibrato was needed, but your slower vibrato is lovely. I can't wait to start practicing!

Thanks for the songs and great advice! Makes sense - as with most learning, begin slowly, developing relaxed skill for foundation, before speeding up.

You got this! Be patient, and remember vibrato is not as fast as we perceive it to be when watching professionals. Get lots of hours of using easy vibrato on easy songs, and then you will be able to let your newly trained vibrato off leash without it running away from you!

Thanks for this video. I’ve been working vibrato for three years now…mostly because so many of the teachers I’ve had haven’t bothered to try to teach it (one told me she didn’t know how to teach it). Well, three years in, and it’s coming along. This is really helpful. My teacher keeps telling me to speed up, but I find that I do exactly what you described when I try to speed it up so that it’s satisfying, so I am ignoring him for now. Focusing on making sure the motion comes from my elbow (doing arm, not wrist vibrato) and keeping tension away as much as I can helps more than just trying to get it faster without foundation. I’m actually happiest with my vibrato when I don’t worry so much about how fast I do it but really focus on form and fullness.

Jessica you hit the nail on the head: I’m actually happiest with my vibrato when I don’t worry so much about how fast I do it but really focus on form and fullness. Keep with that wisdom, and then focus on just "expanding" your speed choices, without such emphasis on "faster". Good luck!

Happy New Year and thanks for the inspiration! I've been taking lessons online because of covid. I'm currently studying Suzuki 3 and Wohlfahrt. My teacher says that when we meet face to face I can start to learn vibrato. I look forward to that. I watched the RD video on basic vibrato tips and have tried a wide slow finger vibrato on a full bow. Now I just need to make it sound less like a siren and more like music.

sounds like you're exactly where I'm at! Almost, anyhow. I'm working on Vivaldi in A minor (which is in book 4 suzuki) and Wohlfahrt as well. I also have online lessons, but my teacher is in another city so I won't be moving to in person lessons. Am currently working on 3rd position mainly and I think once I'm secure in that we will be beginning with vibrato. Can't wait!

It will sound like a siren for awhile! But let your muscle control develop, and keep it smooth. As you get faster, make your "siren" sounds narrower....and eventually, you'll get it smoother and beautiful!

When I play Danny Boy I start on C# on the G string. I don't need the sheet music. I can play all those by ear.

@@RedDesertViolin it is known as relative pitch isn't it? I don't have perfect pitch but just about any musician should have relative pitch.
@RedDesertFiddle
@RedDesertFiddle 2 жыл бұрын
@@AmandaViolinGirl Yep. Relative pitch is a big part of it, in addition to predicting the intervals between notes (or guessing, and feeling them out). A knowledge or instinct for fingerboard geography also helps. But basically, I'm describing relative pitch, so you are correct! And MANY people do not develop this skill.....some people figure it out on their own, some have a teacher that deliberately teaches it to them, but many people miss that connection, and they have to go back later and add it remedially.

For my second ever violin lesson, my teacher taught me the scales of G, D and A, one octave each. With those scales under my belt, I found that I could pick out any number of tunes by ear- including Danny Boy starting on C# on the G string. So I'd practice the etudes my teacher gave me, and then play random tunes by ear for dessert.

Thanks for the video. I had a question regarding vibrato. Whenever I practice vibrato( learning recently) , somehow I put pressure on my neck to chin rest. Is it normal ?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 2 жыл бұрын
Normal, yes, but not desireable. Try your BEST to relax. Added tension is never a good thing on violin. Something that can really help is to place your scroll against a wall, so it supports the violin, and it pushes the violin into your body. But you also need to make sure your shoulder rest/chin rest is doing their job. Good luck!

i have a question! whenever i do vibrato, my violin shakes a little and my chin just hurts a little bit. It's gotten a lot better with practice but it's still there. is my posture wrong? what should I do to fix that? thanks so much for this video by the way!
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin Жыл бұрын
Hi PYL, I have a video discussing how to solve the bow from shaking during vibrato, but it will help your SCROLL shaking as well. Here is that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKqvamyEiqhjbMk But your chin pain is an indication that your posture is wrong, or that your equipment doesn't fit you properly. I have lots of videos about shoulder rests and chinrests. Try my playlist called "Equipment" or just search "red desert violin stuber" or red desert violin shoulder rest. THAT will set you on a path to find the proper setup for yourself. There are SO many options to be comfortable.....there is no reason to suffer pain. Good luck, and if you discover something cool, share it with us, please!

To me, the frustrates me the most is that the violin shakes too much
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin Жыл бұрын
This is a COMMON problem, and frustrating, yes. So, there are ways to fix it. 1) check your set up and make sure your violin is properly supported. 2) Pin your scroll against a wall when practicing vibrato. Sometimes by immobilizing the violin, your hand will change what it is doing and the problem gets fixed. 3) Focus on PARALLEL motion of the oscillations to the strings. I have my students to TONS of mini-whooshes, or "ghost-whooshes" to train the hand to oscillate perfectly parallel to the string. If your hand goes diagonal to the strings, it can cause movement. 4) Beware of "jack-hammer" vibrato. Keep your finger pressure consistent, but minimal. 5) Pay close attention to the thumb. Is thumb trying to participate in the vibrato? Thumb should be a SPECTATOR ONLY, sitting still like a tennis match. 6) This is a big one: if you are practicing vibrato up in 4th position (near the purfling), make sure the heel of your hand isn't bumping underneath the violin, causing it to bump up and down. You can tell this is a problem if your BOW wants to bounce also. Try those things. I bet you'll discover some things you can fix. Good luck!
