Simple Stop Block System for Miter Saws [How to]

In this video I show you how I added a stop block to my new dual bevel compound miter saw. It was made with some scrap bits of plywood and I put it together in just a few minutes. Adding a stop block to your miter saw helps you make repeatable cuts easier and faster.

Simple and effective. I am going to make sure I can mount it to my saw and make one. The only thing I would suggest is adding a small (~1/8"-1/4") bevel on the bottom of the long fence to help prevent gathered dust in the corner from stopping the workpiece shy of the block and making pieces short.

Many mitre saw plans limit the range of stop block travel to left of the blade. Most of us are right-handed and the industry standard is a right mounted handle and trigger. Your bi-directional design is smart and simple.

Great idea, simple and effective. I suggest adding a small perpendicular block on top of the long inner stop block to keep the left end from dropping down when sliding it.

Great video! I think the zero clearance is brilliant. Makes measuring easier and more accurate. It was always a pain to measure and draw a line on the wood and then bring down the blade to see where exactly it would cut and figure what side of the line to cut. This eliminates the guesswork.

I've done 45s with this one before, you just end up cutting through your zero clearance fence (which is fine because you can just slide it down and recut it to zero clearance once you are done) if you want to you can also make 45 degree stop blocks, but i didn't find it necessary in my case. Very nice. Very simple. I do not have a mitre saw, but something like that would work on my table saw sled. When I have repetition pieces to cut I usually end up making a temporary stop with screws/clamps.

Very well done Grant. I’ll have to remember this one the next time I need to cut a lot of pieces the same length on my miter saw. It’s very easy to make and wouldn’t cost much either. I usually use a sled on my table saw. You need to watch my last video and use a clamp to hold small pieces at the drill press. 😁👍🏻

Is there a way of adding a fence so that you don't reduce the thickness of your cross cut amount? Screwing a wooden board to the front of the miter fence automatically reduces the amount of cross cut size you can do by a 3/4". Wish there was a way to add the board fence that is flushed to your miter saw fence or even screwing the board to the back of the metal miter saw fence instead, though the way the miter saw fence is designed, this would be harder.

There are ways of doing this, but it's much more complicated. Sometimes you need to sacrifice one thing (depth of cut) for something else (convenience) good luck👍

It would, but then the "zero clearance" wouldn't be there any more. I've used it on 45s before the only thing is the stop block needs to be changed to a 45 one 😁

Thanks! I don't think MDF would be strong enough. 3/4 plywood seems to be the right choice for stability, but if you have scrap MDF give it a try and let me know how it works out

Great idea, however, I see a problem with this with a miter saw that doesn't have the sliding capabilities, which means that will take away from the width that i can cut. Any ideas on how to modify this for a stationary miter saw?

Thanks! I agree it takes away some of the cutting depth, which is frustrating even if you have a sliding miter saw🤣 you are always 1" from the edge of the cut you want to make. In terms of a solution for you, I would build a structure (like wings on the side of your miter saw stand) that's in line with fence. Then you can add a stop block system to that. Good luck!

Grant, I'm impressed with that stop block. It looks so simlpe that I might even be able to make it. All I know for sure is I'm gonna try. I'm new at wood working so I have a lot to learn. Like any hobby or anything else for that matter in life you never stop learning and the only way to learn is to ask. So my question is way did you make to a cut across the top of the board and then cut it again to finish the cut with your miter saw, Instead of just cutting it in one pass? Great video! I have been looking for a spot that does that involve a T track. I have a few questions though. Firstly, ha here is the knob in the final result? Is into on the back if the fence? I assume so, but then how does it stay it place when you put lumber up agasint it? I have an idea but I’m not certain.

Thanks Jake! Good questions and after the video was released I realized I didn't show exactly how the knob works. It does screw directly into the back of the fence. It stays in place because the screw digs into the plywood fence. It's not perfect as it will eventually wear out, but you can always replace it 😁

@@TheGrantAlexander that is what I was thinking but I was not sure if it would hold tight enough. I bought all the material and plan on making the stop block soon. I already made a fence using your method.

i have a question, can you use the stop block on either end of the mitre/ saw

Yes you can and I have done that occasionally. Obviously, you would need to make a different one depending on the side for the stop block that reaches past the saw's original fence.
