There were trading books in the 80's. They've been around at least since the one about Jesse Livermore that came out in the 1920's. Of course, they didn't give you a blueprint like the ones authorized by every fake guru on the planet like the ones nowadays, but they could inspire you to form your own strategy - which is what you want in a trader. You want a person who can think outside the box. A person simply copying someone else's strategy will go broke because they can't adapt to the ever changing market.
